Found, Free, and Flea: Creating Collections from Vintage Treasures
Grandma’s rusty teakettle, old fishing lures, a broken antique camera from the attic—these are your foundation pieces for building authentic collections on the cheap.
When Tereasa Surratt’s husband convinced her that they should buy a derelict summer camp in Wisconsin, they had no idea the treasure trove they’d inherit with the property. While renovating the decrepit cabins...more

Basically, this book has the capacity to ruin my life. This book is about ostensibly about making collections from vintage treasures, and it serves perfectly well in that regard, although the advice becomes redundant quickly (how many times can you say "go to flea markets" ?). But the "vintage collection" advice is not why I love this book. The author & her husband bought the derelict camp that he attended as a child. It has a storied past (bootleggers! brothel! church camp!) and piles of no...more
This book really did not suit my purpose. I expected this book to focus more on obtaining items and how to make/start collections. Instead its sole purpose was to advertise the author's for profit retreat. The retreat is a revamped camp that her husband actually attended as a child, and in their remodeling, they came across tons of vintage items from that time, and the time after when the camp grounds was used for other purposes. Basically, it is the author saying "we found these wonderful thing...more
I'm not generally interested in interior design but when the focus is on found objects, folk art, or collecting my interest is immediately piqued. The author and her husband bought her husband's summer camp in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin and discovered a treasure trove of old objects that served as the inspiration for collecting and decorating with similar items as long as they were "found, free, or flea" acquired. Though Surratt's focus seems to be as a how-to or inspirational book, I actually found...more
Tereasa Surratt and her husband bought a run-down old lake resort in Wisconsin and over the past decade have restored it using primarily items that were found, free, or purchased at a flea market. This book had lots of good junk eye candy, particularly if you are fond of the Adirondack or camp style. I really enjoyed it because it wasn't just a retread of previously published images from a magazine, because that's what most titles under the Country Living umbrella are. Looking at the pictures of...more
Loved it, and would love to live here.
A couple buy his childhood camp. Brimming with antiques - my heaven!
Tins, blankets, books, signs, bottles - everything carefully put together, with a fresh set of eyes, creating a wonderful echo of the past - no dollarama plastic here.
Told through text and photography, page after page - loved it!

What I didn't like: It felt like this book was saying, "Look at me! Don't I look so happy with my junky finds!"
To be fair, I'm not sure what the heck was going on. Yes, they demonstrated the a multitude of collections, but what am I to do with all of it besides dust it every week? Where's the purpose/story?

An interesting take on found free or flea market finds (as the title suggests) and how to put them together into collections. I like it. Lots of ideas for how to decorate in the lodge or cabin style.
Tereasa Surratt and her husband bought an old summer camp that had quite the colorful history: it was a speakeasy, a brothel, a hotel, a Catholic retreat, and then a summer camp. As such, when they bought it, there were lots of interesting bits and bobs left behind for them to sort through. She deta...more
