This set was recommended to me by a 9th grader, and I'm giving the hardcover set to my granddaughter on her 10th birthday. While the writing style is not up to my J.K.Rowling yardstick, the books offer good characters and an unusual premise. Percy and others are "demigods", meaning that one of their parents is a Greek god. Thus, Riordan also brings young readers into the world of mythology while providing an entertaining action storyline.

As with the Potter books, one of my favorite characteristi...more

I am as obsessed as a person can be with PJ. Annabeth is so cool, Grover is so hilarious and Percy (at least in the movie) is SUCH a hottie! I watched the movie only hours ago and yes, it's true: they practically ripped the book apart. Where's Clarisse? That's what I ask. Where's Dionysus and Annabeth's dream of being an architect and relationship with Luke and Grover's obsession with Pan and the REAL way Percy came across the pearls? They were never Persephone's. I mean, Grover is white! Annabe...more

Loved these books, a little dissapointed by the movie for the lightning thief though. It shouldve been alot better since the books were amazing.

So many reviews of this series compare it to Harry Potter (and with good reason) but as a fan of both (and a beginning skeptic myself) I have to say that though they are similar series, Percy Jackson stands on its own. In the Lightening Thief, Percy is so Harry Potter, the camp is so Hogwarts, Chiron is so Dumbledore- I completely admit that. In fact when this series first came out I refused to read it and criticized it for being a rip-off. But for some reason, I gave it a try (at the request of...more

This is very much a case of "books that found me exactly when I needed them". I needed good old-fashioned adventure. And I got it.

Riordan manages to make these stories very believable. Despite my firm conviction that monsters don’t exist, and neither does gods, and the greek myths are in fact nothing but myths, despite all of that, I believe in this story. With every sentence I am deeper engulfed in the quests, in the adventure, with every word I let go of my convictions and let the story drag m...more

I was really impressed and surprised by this series. I loved learning about myths and folklore in middle school, and these books were really refreshing as I got to remember all the Greek gods I'd heard of and learn about a lot more I'd never come across before.

Rick Riordan was clever to make a character from a broken one-parent home with learning disabilities and make him a demigod. His books appeal to his audience very directly, though I feel there's plenty of cross-over for people of varied a...more

I read this series along with my 10 year old granddaughter. I was curious about the twist of putting mythology into the modern day in this children's series. I wasn't sure how well an author could successfully walk the tightrope appropriately between the scarey fantasy of mythology and the familiar reality of the modern day setting.

Riordan is remarkable in his skill. I noted that he had on his team 3 or 4 middle-schoolers who he had read his books as they developed and gave their opinions and cr...more

My sister is a third grade teacher. She lent me two young adult series, and she starts school this week. So I took a short break from my usual reading material and read the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, The Lightning Thief, The Sea of Monsters, The Titan's Curse, The Battle of the Labyrinth, and The Last Olympians. They were exciting books, and although a little dark, I did enjoy them. There were great adventures and it was interesting to be reintroduced to the characters from Greek my...more

Favorite: book IV - Battle of the Labyrinth

I majored in Greek mythology at college, so I can say happily, with some authority, that Riordan really knows his stuff and gets it right. No matter how brief the reference and how it's reused for the adventure, he gives snippets that kids, anyone, can latch onto and be consistent with more academic approaches. Also means, if you're already familiar with the mythology, he lets you feel very clever by letting you recognize a being a page in advance befor...more

READ THESE BOOKS!
though made for a younger audience of the preteens/8-12 range, Riordan is still an amazing story-teller. it can be compared to Harry Potter, but only because the protagonist is a teenaged boy who suddenly gains super-human powers, has 2 friends, and goes to a special training facility.
IT IS NOT HARRY POTTER!
these books are fast-paced, action-packed, and still really funny and touching. seen through the eyes of a 12-year-old boy, the story follows Percy and his friends though al...more

THIS SERIES IS CRAZY AMAZING!

I don't think I'll ever love books as much as Percy Jackson's. They are not just great reads, they also teach you heaps of stuff about the Greeks, and then the Romans in The Heroes of Olympus (another amazing series by Rick!).
The writing is so good, I can't find any words to describe; just unfathomable really.
My favourite child and parent thing duo would have to be Percy & Poseidon! Percy is so strong willed and cares for his friends more than himself, which is...more

I found it too kiddish - maybe it's because I'm almost 30. Don't get me wrong. Ive read the harry potter series and loved them so much that I saw all their movies and played their pc games too. But this one is too predictable on a lot of occasions:

1) bad guy comes, irritates/tortures hero, hero does a strike move, wins, praise, cheesy dialogues and lots of "how did i do that". it gets boring pretty fast.

2) hero asks qs, answered with riddles, more qs more riddles, someone else comes into the pic...more

#1 "The Lightning Thief"
#2 "The Sea of Monsters"
#3 "The Titan's Curse"
#4 The Battle of the Labyrinth
#5 The Last Olympian

After members of your family of all ages have enjoyed the "Harry Potter " series in print and on screen, what comes next? Perhaps Rick Riordan's series "Percy Jackson and the Olympians," five books a bit over 300 pages each. They are not about sports, silly! Rather, they present a fantasy tale of the immortal gods of ancient Greece, all of whom are apparently alive and wel...more

This series gets better with every book, and it needed to. The first book is a mess, with the characters bouncing from one event to another. The second reads like the Cliff Notes version of The Odyssey. The third book is where things start to gel.

While it is tempting to draw parallels to the Harry Potter franchise, since it involves a boy learning about a fantasy world where he is a powerful hero, the Percy Jackson series is a pale imitation. The plot elements are clumsy and heavy handed, and th...more

Read it.

It's an amazing story line and just read it!

In my oppinion the writting is better than J.K Rowling (I mean sentence wise...wit wise as well.) But the world that Riordan puts you in is every bit as amazing as Rowling's.

I couldnt wait to find out how it all ended and the characters! So well developed and funny! If you know greek history, this is just the perfect series to get into. Down to the Gods characterzation had me smiling, I could picture them all so perfectly in my head.

I pretty much loved this series. I am 29 years old, and know this series is about teenagers, but they were very well written, and kept my attention. And I just may have learned a bit about the gods.

Praise to the one of the most outstanding YA authors!

Rick Riordan started it all. His complete series of "Percy Jackson And The Olympians" created the Camp Half-Blood that will and perhaps would imprint in every reader's mind. He made the mythological gods and goddesses come to life, including other mythical and magical creatures. This series was the reason why I liked and fell inlove with YA novelties! Like what The New York Times had said, "Wait no more for the next Harry Potter!" One way or a...more

I know these books are meant for young adults but as an adult they were good. Are they super deep and meaningful? No. Will they entertain you? Yes. My nephew lives on the other side of the world and we only get to face time every now and then. The face time usually consists of him being very bored (he's 11) and wanting to be anywhere but talking about how school is going. Once he found out his Aunt read the Percy Jackson series he ran and got all the books to show me, and then proceeded to talk t...more

Comparing this to other books rated 5 stars, is this particularly well written from a literary perspective? Is it sufficiently complicated to confuse readers every step of the way? Does it feature a vast and complicated story line? Does it feature thorough character development and interactions? The answer to all these questions is NO!

Then why a five star? Well, Percy Jackson has 3 things to its credit: 1. It reads really smoothly, being filled with constant action, and hence is very entertainin...more

The Lightnig Thief was a actually part of my school's curriculum my 6th grade year. We were learning about mythology, so we had a good insight on the actual little tales and myths of Greek mythology. (I'm currently a sophomore.) I fell in love with it the day we got it! The rest of the series was optional to read for future book reports I edned up finishing the third one that year (fact being I had to wait a whole other year for the 4th one to release), so by the time the Battle of the Labyrinth...more

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Boxed Set (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1-5)Percy Jackson and the Olympians Boxed Set by Rick Riordan

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have read all the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan and have found the author's way of telling the story brilliant. His ideas are both creative and inspiring. For anyone that loves greek/roman myths and civilisation, they are a different way of retelling the treasured legends in a fun and action-packed new adventure, set in the dominating Western Civilisation.
The main character, Percy, is the son of Poseidon, t...more

Really fun stories, noteworthy for making Greek mythology accessible. Presents lots of obscure minor gods and monsters, and brings to life several classic Greek myths, including the Titanomachy. Tends to lean toward the younger end of the "young adult" spectrum with some of the humor employed, but it's by no means annoying. Riordan simply writes junior high and high school boys very well.

The plots were fairly sound, but two things consistently nagged at me. First, Greek mythology is by no means...more

Whenever I first heard of these books (from Courtlyn, who is still obsessed with them) I absolutely hated them for no good reason at all. I skimmed through the first and said it was boring, unoriginal, and a huge copy of Harry Potter. I dubbed Percy as Harry, Annabeth as Hermione, Grover as Ron... you get the picture. This was back when I went through one of my biggest phases ever, a Harry Potter phase. I always picked on Courtlyn for liking these books and I thought they were just downright hor...more

I read all of the books in this series one after the other, and instead of a detailed review of each one, I'll provide some highlights of what I liked about the series and each book as applicable. Synopses of the plots follow at the end.

The overarching story across all the books is that Percy and his friends fight to stop the rise of Kronos a Titan, a child of Ouranus and Gaea.

What I liked:
The use of the great prophecy to hold the quests together and to make the series cohesive - it works for m...more

Humorous, unpredictable and fast paced, the series provides young readers with the opportunity to gain a basic understanding of mythology. It is an easy read for preteens and is one of those best-sellers that can get a child hooked on reading. The story is told in the main character’s own words, sacrificing richness for relevance in style and language. The fact that themes of heroism, friendship and sacrifice are well explored somewhat makes up for this. As is typical of Greek mythology, the boo...more

Ladies and gentleman of the jury I find the book The Titans Curse by Rick Riordian to be excellent at teaching me about Greek history, giving me the thrill of action and at the same time making me laugh. However, there were areas in which the book was not quite as good at teaching people how to deal with problems without pulling out a sword, and fighting them. But I do know how to kill a monster if I ever need to.
The book Titans curse was made in the year 2007. It has 312 pages, and is popula...more

buku ini sedikit banyak memuaskan keingin-tahuan saya tentang greek mythology.. bahkan saya selalu berpikir harusnya Indonesia (departement pendidikan khususnya) memasukkan pelajaran Mitologi Yunani ke dalam kurikulumnya.. anyways, back to the book..

If you ever read Harry Potter series, you might be a half disappointed because the main character is quite represent Harry-Hermione-Ron in a form of Greek Mythology. Summer camp (instead of one-year-school), demigod people (half god people) vs pure & half-blood witch, monsters, Chiron (a wise Centaurus as adviser) vs Albus Dumbledore, a-quite-same-forecast-but-different-subject about someone has to die in order to save the world (Olympus vs Hogwarts = save the world), quite same love problem...more

I think this is a fantastic book series for kids -- Cameron has read the first book and loved it, plus it sparked a real interest in Greek mythology. I love how the book brings the Greek gods and the Titans to life and gives them modern touches, like Ares riding a motorcycle and wearing RayBans to hide his fiery eyes. The story lines are creative and the books all tie together with events in book one being integral to the story in book five, much like the Harry Potter series.

However, as an adult...more

The Percy Jackson series is about a teenage boy named Percy Jackson, a dyslexic student with ADHD who has been kicked out of several schools and branded a troublemaker for events that occur that are beyond his control - such as blowing up the school's band room. Percy has no idea why these things happen to him until the age of 12, when he discovers that he is in fact a demigod and a son of one of the "Big Three" - Poseidon.

Percy embarks on a series of adventures with his fellow demigods to prot...more
