I started reading this book because I like the title. Yes, I am one of those people who will read a book because of the title or what the cover looks like. I know do not judge a book by its cover but sometimes that is very hard. In addition, an amazing title and catchy cover is what will sell a book. I have purchased many books by just looking at the cover or reading the title.

Rachael Merchant knows Michael Rogers (read his story in “Maggie Mae”). She’s a homicide cop with some very special abilities that help her in her job. She ends up getting lost and lands in Brownwood. The action seems to start right after Patrick and Rachael meet. Patrick starts acting like a jealous boyfriend and Rachael thinks he’s crazy.

Sandy has given Patrick quite the ego. She’s also made Rachael a strong-willed woman. Patrick’s mother is a real “cracker jack” – she really loves her son. The three of them have you turning the pages just to see what will happen between them next. Sandy creates a morning after scene (not what you’re thinking) that has you chuckling and feeling sorry for Rachael at the same time.

This story focuses more on the unexplained. This gives a story to those feelings you sometimes have when you just can’t explain a happening that no one else sees or feels. It will keep you riveted until the mystery of Emily is solved – you will be hooked.

Because of the police being involved in this mystery, Sandy’s descriptions seem to be spot on. I felt like I was watching one of the crime shows on television. The detail she used – would love to know what type of research she did to be so accurate.

This is a story that I would love to see be made into a movie – definitely Lifetime material. They would have to include Rachael’s bird - would make a great “running gag” in the film. Sandy doesn’t make this a book about sex between Rachael and Patrick – even though their romance is sensual. This is a story about making sure that justice is served. And as you finish another great book from Sandy Wolters, please make sure to read the Author’s Notes at the end.

This story has many elements: romance, humour, visits from a loved one who passed on, and the paranormal aspects that the heroine is blessed with and what protects her and makes her the strong and beautiful person she is. Wolters describes this book as being very dark but don't let it scare you away. It's generally easy reading material until you really get to know the character of Emily and what she had to endure in her marriage from Hell.

There are two pages, especially, which are very disturbing but, after reading Coming Unglued: A Mother's Journey into Hell by Norma Budden, I can't say Wolters is the only author who writes with raw honesty when it comes to shedding light on spousal abuse. It may be disturbing...more

Hmm, where do I start? Did I like the story. Absolutely! I was a little slow in realizing it was a novella and was looking for more development. Now this is one of the scenes I didn't care for, not that I'm a prude by any stretch of the imagination, but because this was a novella, I really thought it lasted must too long for the length of the book. Is this part of the book well written, Absolutely. Was it hot and passionate? Oh yeah, just a little too long. I believe the time could have been better spent with Patrick's mom (deceased) talking with him and Rachael.

Whoops, got a head of myself. When I was reading the scene where his mom is talking to he and Rachael, I had to back away for a minute and recollect my senses. Why? Because his mom isn't some apparition floating about the house, she is as solid as you or I. I forget, Miss Walters writes paranormal books.

A little more information before I wind this up (don't want the review longer than the book).

A murder occurs in Brownwood, Texas. One of the nicest women in town is Emily Campbell who is married to police Chief Boyd Campbell. Patrick is called on the radio one night to come to the Campbell residence on an apparent suicide by his boss Boyd. None of the police procedural protocols are followed which doesn't settle well with Patrick, but going against his boss doesn't seem like the smartest career move on his part, so he keeps quite while a terrible feeling pulls in his gut. He wants to enlist help, yet has no one to turn to in town. Welcome in Rachael, a Phoenix (somewhat psychic) homicide detective crosses his path while on vacation yet gets lost along her way (she has a real problem with maps and directions). These two will combine forces along with a few town folk and a few other players who are no longer part our world. How they flush out the murderer of Emily is well worth the ride.

This book is for both males and females. Something for everyone and a very fun read.

I will be reading another one of Sandy's books in the coming months, just haven't decided on which one.

We all like our specific genres but once in awhile it’s nice to switch. It’s also nice to change your favorite book length once in awhile …you may have just read a voluminous 600 page saga and need a break or maybe you just read a too short, short story.

I'm laughing so hard right now, at around 30% in. Not a bad book, and certainly I will give it three to four stars right now.

I decided in the end that I would give it three stars instead of four. This is not the best writing I have ever seen. The plot is hurried and rather amateurish at times. Revenge. Retribution. Justice. Those are all themes that, as a writer myself, I adore. They don't tug, they yank, at the strings of our hearts.

And that is exactly what this book did.

Sandy has crafted a tale that takes you on a journey of varying emotions. One moment you are shocked by the paranormal aspects and the next, tears are rolling down your cheeks at the heartbreaking actions thrust upon Emily. A surprising mystery with a paranormal tie-in, this book surprised me. The first work of Wolters I loved, and after reading Justice For Emily, I can safely say she’s become one of my favorite authors. Indie or traditional aside – she’s just a damn good writer. From the start of this book you’re pulled in right away, at Emily’s funeral, and the torment Patrick feels about the suspicion surrounding her death. Wolters has a great talent for creating characters that pull you in; in a matter of minutes you feel as if you’re a part of their life and on the same journey. And together, you want to see justice brought for Emily.

Rachael Merchant is a strong woman, there’s no doubt, but she’s a fragile mess on the inside. She’s seen too much bad, and has a few secrets of her own. She’s one of those characters you love, want to cheer on, and are secretly a little jealous that you’re not more like. But when she decides to take a case on, watch out, or she’ll run you over.

I will give warning there is a graphic, somewhat disturbing scene in this book. When seeing what Emily had to go through, you’ll feel it in your core. For anyone who has experienced rape, or similar too, one section (you’ll know it right away) may be too much for you. That being said, it really is a very strong scene, I think necessary to see the life, or nightmare, Emily lived. But if you’ve dealt with similar issues in your past, you may want to skip past that scene.

I may not be a lawyer, but I’ve learned enough over time to be turned off by a book when the author hasn’t done proper research into law and legal matters – but Wolters, clearly, has put the time into research. Not once was I jarred by a statement in the book that was screaming out that it was a guess, or an incorrect statement.

Overall, this is a riveting story of abuse, murder, love, and justice. Had I had the time to, I would have finished this in one day. Again, Wolters pulls you in so deeply, you don’t want to stop reading until the story has been finished. She takes time and care in developing characters with their own styles and voices, ones you feel close to, ones you want to spend time with. There is a hint, or flare, of paranormal to this story as well – which was a nice twist. And thank God, no one was a vampire.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of mystery or suspense romance. Because yes, there is some romance involved – the kind us girls love to daydream about.

Bad writers can get lucky and write a good book, but they never get lucky twice. Wolters, is just a good writer, who writes good books – period.

When I first began reading Sandy Wolters' JUSTICE FOR EMILY, I was immediately engaged by her opening chapter with a grieving friend, named Patrick, standing beside Emily's grave. Patrick is a a cop who is convinced Emily's death was not a suicide as her husband insists. He is intent on proving it was a murder, and that the husband did it. This book is written a bit differently than your typical fictional murder story. From the beginning we know who the murderer is. We just need to prove it. This is pretty much where the story begins.

I very much enjoyed this book! I liked the characters and their interactions with each other, and the details regarding the murder investigation. I was surprised at some of the events, and found the story was detailed and believable. The authors’ description of places and food almost made me see and taste what she was talking about.

I enjoyed Justice For Emily for many reasons. The characters are interesting and Rachel is sassy! As the story progresses, you learn disturbing details of the life and death of Emily. The description of the town of Brownwood, TX is spot on, including each of the restaurants. I would know because I spent a lot of time there growing up. If you like reading murder mysteries, romance novels and/or paranormal thrillers, I'm sure that you will enjoy Justice for Emily as much as I did!
