Mead takes a broad look at past and present changes in the church, and postulates a future to which those changes are calling us. Denominations, once structured to deliver resources to far-off lands of foreign mission, now encounter the mission field in the layperson's workplace and the community surrounding the local congregation. Thus, the church is called to reinvention ...more

This book was written more than twenty years ago, yet so much of it remains relevant even now. Although often thought of as a church fixer because he founded the Alban Institute, which did more than its share of church fixing during its time, he is at heart a prophet. Mead offers a broadside challenge to several aspects of the church's life under the Constantinian 'Christendom paradigm.' Many of his challenges are salutary, even if his proposed solutions don't exactly break new ground. This is a thought provoking book on the changes that our churches need to make to continue to be vital. "A new church is being born. It may not be the church we expect or want. The church of the future may not include our favorite liturgy or hymn...God's promises always arrive with surprises in them. The form of the new world and new church is not in our hands What is in our hands is the chance to respond to God's call" (87).

READ MAR 2013

Easy read on a difficult topic. This is a concise description of what I believe is still at work today in many churches.

A classic book which foretold the changing realities of congregational life. It was "cutting edge" when it was published.
