"Pippi," said Annika one day when they were eating pancakes in Villa Villekulla's pleasant kitchen, "Everyone knows you're the strongest person in the world. But who's next strongest?"

"Starke Adolf," said Pippi at once. "Remember I wrestled him to the ground at the fair and won a hundred kronor?"

"Oh yes!" said Tommy. "Of course. And who's third?"

"Ah," said Pippi. "I'm glad you asked me that question. It's my old friend Lukas the Engine-Driver, and now I think I need to go visit him again."

Lukas the Steam Engine Driver was one of my Childhood role models. Michael Ende's first book to become a best seller, it is very much part of my childhood; or one could go further: Ende with this and his other books helped to shape my worldview: things are not always what they seem to be. His genius idea of the "Schein-Riese", the aparent giant, who, unlike all others who are "Schein-Zwerge", aparent dwarfes, appears taller and taller the further away you step. This poor Scheinriese was hiding a ...more

Oh no, the magic is lost! Between 2.5 and 3 stars...

I remember when I was in primary school, we spent an hour every Friday in the school library. Back then my teacher read this book for us, but she never finished the story (she stopped around 30%) because the semester was already over. Many, many years went by and I have always wondered what happened to Jim Knopf and Lukas der Lokomotivfuehrer. I can't help but feel sad. Back then I was so enchanted by the story, it was colorful and magical! But

Not a bad book but maybe when you`re a kid you`ll enjoy it much more than when you`re an adult reader.

Still, we have a lot of good things happening...

Loved the illustrations and yes, the romanian version looks great.

This is one of those masterpieces of literature for children, which brings a lot of fun and light to their parents as well (Tove Jansen maybe closest example). Imaginery world is mixed and shaken here with the real one, with a little touch of satire and lot of humor. You always know where real China ends and imaginary one starts, but you hardly notice how it happens.
Little island kingdom has one king and three subjects, untill one fine day they get the fourth - black baby foundling - Jim Knopf.

the books of ende are places to be. neverending story is best as an example. in momo you find the protagonist having a strong imagination like ende has. but these places are always threatend by forces to overcome. jim knopf is on a quest against a dragon in dragoncity. but unlike the original he is not killing the dragon but making it golden. sort of ghandi inspired i quess. this is not the most mature work of ende but the most pure. here i can imagine him telling a story to children not knowing ...more

3.5 stars.

I fondly remember the anime series I watched as a child. I believe the book is also great for children, yet I did not like it that much as an adult. It was enjoyable and sweet enough but not quite fetching.

This is a great children's book! Full of adventure and wonder, friendship, a little bit of romance, pirates and dragons, and a train that can double as a ship. Many scenes of this book, which I read so many years ago, still stick with me, like the echo mountains and the cute little society of Lummerland.

The Norwegian translation is interesting because you can tell that it has been translated from German instead of, say, English, in the use of expressions, words, etc.

During my studying in Freiburg for a semester in 2015, I had bought Jim Knopf already (in English his name is Jim Button) but it took me a while to start reading it. I had already read "Momo" by Michael Ende by that time (a beautiful children's book that I would also recommend for adults) and wanted to read more of his work.

To be fair, I only read very positive reviews about the book on Goodreads and although I certainly agree with the fact that it is a well-written and beautifully illustrated

Was eine wundervolle Geschichte!!

Ega

I used to watch the animated adaptation of this as a kid, but never got around to reading the book until now. Surprisingly the show is actually very faithful to the book. As far as children’s books go, this one is quite fun and exciting, though there are some bits and pieces (e.g. Lisi wanting Jim to learn to read so she can have a husband who is smarter than her and whom she can admire or some of the racial stereotypes) that I wouldn’t necessarily leave uncommented if I was reading it to a chil ...more

Men fortsatt underho ...more
