Lukas the Steam Engine Driver was one of my Childhood role models. Michael Ende's first book to become a best seller, it is very much part of my childhood; or one could go further: Ende with this and his other books helped to shape my worldview: things are not always what they seem to be. His genius idea of the "Schein-Riese", the aparent giant, who, unlike all others who are "Schein-Zwerge", aparent dwarfes, appears taller and taller the further away you step. This poor Scheinriese was hiding a ...more
the books of ende are places to be. neverending story is best as an example. in momo you find the protagonist having a strong imagination like ende has. but these places are always threatend by forces to overcome. jim knopf is on a quest against a dragon in dragoncity. but unlike the original he is not killing the dragon but making it golden. sort of ghandi inspired i quess. this is not the most mature work of ende but the most pure. here i can imagine him telling a story to children not knowing ...more
I used to watch the animated adaptation of this as a kid, but never got around to reading the book until now. Surprisingly the show is actually very faithful to the book. As far as children’s books go, this one is quite fun and exciting, though there are some bits and pieces (e.g. Lisi wanting Jim to learn to read so she can have a husband who is smarter than her and whom she can admire or some of the racial stereotypes) that I wouldn’t necessarily leave uncommented if I was reading it to a chil ...more
This is one of those masterpieces of literature for children, which brings a lot of fun and light to their parents as well (Tove Jansen maybe closest example). Imaginery world is mixed and shaken here with the real one, with a little touch of satire and lot of humor. You always know where real China ends and imaginary one starts, but you hardly notice how it happens.
Little island kingdom has one king and three subjects, untill one fine day they get the fourth - black baby foundling - Jim Knopf.

Recommends it for: Anyone who enjoys Children's Fantasy/Adventure

I really enjoyed this book from Michael Ende. It's just how I would imagine a Children's-Fantasy story to be.
No violence, no bad words, and it reads very easily and harmonically.
It's also not very frightning for children and the characters were adorable and enjoyable.
There were even wise words in this story. 4.5* Stars for me.

Men fortsatt underho ...more

Wow, upon skimming through the first few pages of this again recently, I was amazing to realize how dated and a bit racist this old favorite of mine was. Did I discuss these issues with my father when I read it as a little kid? Or maybe I just wasn't re-reading the book closely... Well, in any case, I loved it when I read it the first time (and maybe the second and third times).
More childish than Momo or NeverEnding Story, it was a little magic story that I would say is Thomas the Tank Engine meets Pippi Longstocking. Oddly, I think my translation was bad, because this book had a lot of questionable racial stereotypes that I had never noticed in Ende's books before. Weird.

Love it, love it, love it. How I envied Jim Knopf when he got his own steam engine. How I hated the dragon, and laughed at the Chinese Emperors under'ling's. This story is full of wit, adventure, fun, and quirky ideas. Highly recommended for all reading ages.
I had forgotten I read this, but it was one of my favorite early childhood books, (I read it in Hebrew, so I can more or less date when I read it.) It was about trains and there were transparent trees, is all I remember, but I loved it.

I really liked this and i will always remember this series as the series that i could finally finish to read out to my brother :)
So many adventures, so much fun and so many wonderful characters!

I really recommend this!
This brings back some childhood memories...

This was my first larger/longer book, and it is more or less the book that is to blame for my addiction to the written word.

God, how I loved this book. ;)

The imaginary landscapes are gorgeous. Characters, especially Jim knopf's character, develop beautifully throughout the book.
There is a description of the book on wikipedia.

The most exciting part is when they fight the evil dragon, Mrs Grindtooth. You should read it. The part Mr TurTur is really funny. I liked the names of the people.

Ende was one of the most popular and famous German authors of the 20th century, mostly due to the enormous success of his children's books. However, Ende was not strictly a children’s author, as he also wrote bo
