I don't normally read books with heavy BDSM. While I'm all about reading about good sex play in books, I don't get off on reading stories where the sex play gets to the point of this one. While the physical part of it was bad enough, though not bad enough to make me discontinue the reading, it was how one character was broken down to the point that he was in this book. That is not sexy to me in any way, nor is it healthy. This is proven dramatically as this story plays out.

Jeremy is married to a total bitch. There is no other way to describe her. She criticizes and demeans him constantly. She has stripped him of any self-esteem he may have had at some point. He works as a nurse but that's not good enough for the wife. She always wants more, more, more. He develops a crush on Andre, an actor on a television show. Using Andre as his inspiration, Jeremy writes a book centered completely on the actor that he feels that he has fallen in love with. Yes, fallen in love with. That was odd. It was also quite stalkerish. The book gets published and is then turned into a movie and Jeremy wants no one but his favorite actor, the man the book was written for and about, to play the lead part in the movie. Andre signs on and Jeremy is convinced that they will meet and that Andre will be exactly who he sees in his fantasies. Oh, and Jeremy is not gay... has never had any kind of feelings for a man or wanted a man. There is even one scene in the book (the very first one I believe) where Jeremy is quite obviously lusting (quite graphically) over a woman.

Andre is engaged. Being an actor, the engagement is all over the tabloids. Jeremy meets Andre as the movie is being made and realizes that he is about as far off from his fantasy man as he could get. Andre comes across as a jerk who only associates with those who can further his career. It doesn't take long for Jeremy to realize that the Andre in his head is not the one in reality and he develops a strong dislike for the man.

The way the Jeremy/Andre relationship begins is odd. It is after a heated exchange between the two at a party when Andre jumps into a conversation in regards to BDSM. Jeremy storms off and Andre follows. Not long after, their relationship (if you can call it that) begins.

As stated above, I am all about sex play in books but this got ridiculous. Andre took the role as Master to a level I was not comfortable with. There are beatings.... these are not mere spankings with a bit of pain. This was Jeremy literally getting the hell beat out of him constantly. Not just getting beat by Andre, but forced into humiliating positions. I don't get off on reading about humiliation. I don't get off on watching a somewhat (while disturbed) strong character get knocked down to the point of being suicidal if the "Master" is gone for awhile. I also don't get off on one-sided relationships in books. This was 100% all about Andre. Sure, he falls in love with Jeremy. There is no doubt in my mind about that. But Jeremy is not allowed to voice his concerns... get angry... or even have a normal conversation without Andre getting pissed. Andre controls everything. If Jeremy has concerns or is depressed, Andre beats him down worse... not just with his belt, paddle, whip (whatever) but with his words as well. Everything is made to be Jeremy's fault and this forces Jeremy to have an unhealthy attachment to Andre as a result.

Then there is the cheating. I don't read cheating books. Ever. All who know me know this. In this one? It didn't bother me as other books do. Not in the sense that it should anyway. I did not feel bad for Jeremy's wife in any way. Nor did I feel bad for the woman that Andre was engaged to. What I felt bad about (as far as the cheating is concerned) was that I felt that Andre was cheating on JEREMY, not the fiancee, even if that particular relationship wasn't as it appeared.

This is a "break the person down until they literally can not survive without you" kind of BDSM book. I did not like watching Jeremy as he kept falling deeper and deeper. I did not like that Andre would not allow Jeremy to speak his concerns. Sure, Andre is there for Jeremy during a very emotional time (not related to their relationship) but then he's an ass later and that kills it for me. Any compassion or love that I saw didn't matter because he was such a total jerk when Jeremy voiced legitimate concerns about their relationship.

Even with all of that, I still did not hate the book. It was quite different from what I normally read. I am almost wanting to know where Andre and Jeremy go in the 2nd book of the series. But honestly, I don't think I can take much more of Jeremy's all-too-eager subservient side and Andre's I'm-the-Master-and-I-totally-control-everything-about you attitude. If I ever read the 2nd one, it will be awhile down the road.

I have nothing against the BDSM lifestyle. I know there are a lot of people who won't get turned off by what happens in this book. I'm not one of them. The beatings didn't bother me. Watching Jeremy go where he went did.(less)

There are various level of comfort for me on regard of BDSM and maybe Enslaved reached almost the upper limit. I’m saying almost since indeed it’s tempered, sweetened by the romance, and by the “Hollywood” allure that makes everything easier, but still, be aware that the BDSM component is quite heavy.

The story starts almost like a dream, Jeremy is a unsatisfied man trapped in an unhappy marriage; almost like an escape from reality, Jeremy first fell in love with a television actor, a man he saw only on the screen once a week, and then poured that love in a novel, a novel that was accepted from a publisher and then whose right were acquired for a movie… a movie that of course will have as main actor that same man who since the beginning inspired it. Jeremy is walking on clouds, he is sure that, once he will meet the man of his dreams everything will be perfect, doesn’t matter that he is married (to a woman), doesn’t matter that he has never had any gay lover, doesn’t matter that actually, the other man is engaged to a woman and doesn’t even know him from nobody.

Of course it will go wrong, and of course Jeremy will not be able to manage it; we soon learn that Jeremy has big behavioural issue, he has no self-confidence at all and he is prone to get angry. The coldness he sees in Andre is actually shyness and even maybe a little distrust in strangers, but Jeremy is ready to judge him. As soon as he gets angry with Andre, he is also ready to play the supine puppet for to his wife recriminations and then to that of the director of the movie. Andre sees that and offer to Jeremy to help… teaching him the real submission of a slave, and in that way empowering him in everyday life.

While I can have some reticence to accept this theory, what is probably the most difficult thing for me to accept is that it seems almost like everything is a play for Andre. He said he tried this D/s thing in the past, but he said that like “passing”, like it was not important for him. Now, I would expect someone more expert than him to be the Master in a relationship, especially with a fragile man like Jeremy; and indeed things could have gone very wrong if not for an ultimate turn of events. Anyway most of Jeremy’s discipline is given through spanking or similar, so it’s not that they are in danger to really hurt him, if not on an emotional level (that actually can be even worst).

Andre and Jeremy are good together, their main issue is probably that they are not yet fully convinced they want an homosexual relationship; they both profess to be bisexual, but like if they are leaving a door open, Andre especially more than Jeremy.

Shameful Desires 1: Enslaved is presumably the first in a series of books about Andre and Jeremy. I definitely won’t be continuing with this series unfortunately as the bad writing, cliché characters, and overwhelming sex scenes left much to be desired. I wouldn’t recommend this book sadly on any level either. I don’t think it hits the right BDSM note or the right romance note. It feels flat, empty, and utterly predictable.

The plot revolves around Jeremy and Andre. Jeremy is a nurse with a huge crush on TV actor Andre. Jeremy eventually writes a best selling story and screenplay and insists on Andre playing the lead role. Although Andre is standoffish at first, the two eventually start an affair. It doesn’t seem to matter that Jeremy is married or Andre is engaged, they get into hot and heavy BDSM almost immediately. What remains is how they’ll work things out with their women on the side.

The story is told from third person, present tense perspective of Jeremy. For starters the present tense is choppy and ill-used. The writing also flips tense several times and tends to write in a more conversational style, often leaving sentences hanging. The story also lacks any kind of descriptive quality. It’s bland and very routine, describing the same repetitive acts over and over with no different language. The writing itself is the biggest obstacle to overcome with this story and I found myself struggling very hard to keep my attention on what I was reading.

Part of this is that the story setup – prior to the two men meeting – is very perfunctory. The story is entirely told to the reader, despite the present tense use, and immediately the reader is told what a bitch Jeremy’s wife is and how his life came to be at the current point. Instead of explaining how Jeremy went from nurse to successful author, the reader is simply told the following:

And then, the letter … “accepted your submission …provide us with agent name so that we may make an offer …”

And the publication, the sudden fame. Book signings and television interviews, newspaper articles and magazine writeups and his life had suddenly changed, different, scary and exhilarating at the same time. When he’d been contacted for a screen play, he’d almost passed out from excitement—
This is symptomatic of the story as a whole, which tends to leap over important changes with a quick narrative while going into excruciating detail in what is really one long sex scene for 200+ pages.

Along with the problematic writing, the characters lack any real definition or depth. Jeremy is a basket case who can’t function without extreme pain and exhibits wildly explosive and inappropriate emotions. This is supposed to be very sub-like and ok but I’m left feeling he badly needs therapy. He has a very classic evil bitch wife who hates him and spends all their money but he just wants to make happy. Jeremy has zero self respect, dignity, or ego yet all of his considerable problems are supposed to be fixed with extreme and rather damaging spankings and whippings. BDSM is certainly not a cure-all fix and in this case Jeremy is so damaged emotionally and mentally that he’s in no place to be starting a masochistic relationship, even if you can ignore the fact that he’s cheating on his wife no matter how heinous she is.

While all the women in the book are very empty, classic horrible people, Andre is not much better. He comes across very angry and seems to have control issues of his own. The amount of routine “punishment” he deals Jeremy is always extreme, every single time, and often Andre is quite angry while doing it. There’s no question their relationship is mutual and consensual but I’m not convinced it’s very healthy on any level. Jeremy literally can’t function without Andre and the co-dependant nature of their relationship doesn’t feel BDSM, it feels wrong. I also say this having read and enjoyed a lot of BDSM and extreme sado-masochistic stories so it’s not the element of BDSM and pain that bothers me. It’s the emotional instability and clear problems each of these men possess on their own, let alone together.

Once the two men are together the story devolves into repetitive sex scenes. Jeremy is angry/jealous or lonely and thus the two get together for an extreme spanking scene that goes through about six or seven vicious beatings before Jeremy finds his sub-space and all is well. The scenes go on in great detail and length only to speed through any time not together and get back to more in depth sex. The last 150 pages are basically the same sex scene repeated over and over with a bit of angst and drama thrown in about Andre’s fiancé. Not to worry because there is a happy ending of the most obvious and cliché kind. The story needed to resolve the issues with Jeremy’s wife and Andre’s fiancé so it took the extremely easy way out to do that and lost any actual positive feeling I had up to then, which granted isn’t much.

Overall there’s not much I would recommend about this book unfortunately. I didn’t hate it to its very being (such as I do a 1 star book) yet this book isn’t much better. It’s predictable and poorly written with no real character development or depth and the BDSM feels like an empty excuse to have a ton of extreme sex. In the end I wouldn’t recommend this and sadly I won’t be continuing with the series.(less)

Some of the scenes were difficult for me to read through because of the level of physical contact (which I can't imagine personally), but, at the same time, the couple intrigued me in how they desired and fulfilled each other and were learning together.

Mistakes are made on both sides as well as they are both adjusting to themselves and their growing feelings for each other and trying to learn what they are. Both men clearly have their faults and aren't perfect in their decision making but their growing care for each other became obvious as the book goes along. There's also a good share of angst as the couple struggles with public appearances, the need to hide their relationship and the uncertainty about their future. Warning: This is not a book for BDSM beginners. It's also a story of a master/slave relationship so, if that bothers you, this book isn't for you. It's raw and painful how much Jeremy needs what he only can trust Andre to give him. However, they get their HEA.

An annoying part of the book was the tense that the writer used through out but it wasn't enough to take away from the story for me. Some other things I didn't like was that a number of the initial scenes appeared to be more in anger than anything. Although it appeared that Andre had some semblance of control, I was never quite certain if he did or if that was part of his learning to become a better master for his sub. I also didn't like the lack of discussion about going condomless either or how Jeremy got written to be somewhat self destructive at a point in the book because he doesn't have Andre. Lots of mixed feelings - probably more a 3.5 - because it was intriguing and kept me reading despite my concerns. (less)
