For awhile in my childhood, this was my favorite book. What I remember now is that the author doesn't spell things out for you. I enjoyed that I was thrown, in medias res, into an alien culture that I had to understand clue by clue, like cracking a cryptogram or solving a mystery. I loved that the book involved me in this way and made me feel clever. By not dumping in explanations about everything, it also put me in a similar position to Hanna, the human who discovers the strange creatures. She...more

This book was given to me by an older relative, and I found I liked it. It's told half from the point of view of an alien and half from an Earth child who's lost on his planet.
