I read “The Art of Disappearing” concurrently with “Happiness Through Meditation”, also by Ajahn Brahm. While the latter is essentially a Meditator’s Handbook and provides step-by-step instructions on the jhanas (commonly known as concentration meditation), “The Art of Disappearing” address the problems faced during meditation and provides clear, and sometimes humorous solutions and explanations to help meditators overcome these obstacles. The title drew me to this book. Frankly, I like the idea of being able to disappear. If only it were as easy as reading a book about it(sigh). The intellectual in me knew the book would not be about actually disappearing. The "disappearing" was as I is the disappearing of yourself/ego blah blah.

I had trouble connecting with some of the book. It felt like it was better suited for people wanting to live a monastic life. He spoke of "when you're on a long retreat..." I'm thinking a w

I feel I have to give some clarifications about the nature of the book. Often, when talking about books by spiritual authors, we are talking about the extracts from talks rather then a real book. My best guess is that is adaptation of Ajahn Brahm talks for the monks, as also could be found online. Hence, all the retreat references and so on.

For us, the book is a guide to meditation. It efficiently outlines some key points of meditation practice from Buddhist prospective. It can be easily forgott

Really enjoyed it. It ranks up there with Ayya Khema's books. Although the chapters on jhana (like they usually do) were a bit lofty for me at this point, I really enjoyed the earlier chapters on how we should drop things that aren't really our business. (Spoiler: pretty much everything is not our business)

I think I will eventually acquire a physical copy of this one and fill up with highlights and sticky notes.

This was a perfect complement to my study of concentration meditation. Letting go, disappearing. Rereading in late fall - 2015.
I'm using the glossary in this book for Pali terminology. Retread December 2015.

Wow! I've read this twice this year.
This book leaves me incredibly inspired and left me with a great sense of urgency to practice well.
I love everything Ajahn Brahm has written, but particularly this book. At several points it gave me chills.

One of my favourite books. I love everything about it, the title, loose style, depth of some of the lectures. Ajahn Brahm is an amazing teacher.
