Zach isn't impressed with his new dog, Larry, at first. He'd hoped for a chocolate lab or a spaniel, not this funny looking mish-mash of a dog with a great long tail. And who names a dog "Larry," anyway? But Zach discovers that when Larry twirls that ridiculously long tail - Labracadabra! - amazing things happen. It's not very long before Zach knows that he and Larry will ...more

Zach has always dreamed of having a cool dog. But when his parents surprise him with a mutt named Larry, Zach is beyond disappointed – that is until Larry wags his tail saving Zach from an abnormally tall bully. After a few more magical tail wags, Zach decides that maybe Larry isn’t such a bad pet after all. Although, the authors capture Zach’s sarcastic tone, the story falls a little flat. A shrunken bully, a stereotypical nerdy cousin who is allergic to everything, and saving a friendship with ...more

What a adorable story! Zach only wants a dog, but when he finally gets one, it is not what he wants. He wanted a cool dog, but he get a mixed mutt with a quirky tail. And his dog is named Larry! No self respecting dog is named Larry, at least according to Zach. Larry helps Zach navigate his world and life turns out better each day Larry is a part of Zach's life. Each chapter starts with some form of it happened at 10:15 or 11:32 or another time. The repetition at the beginning of each chapter is ...more

Very cute story! Zach desires a dog, not just any dog, the perfect dog, but he ends up with Larry. Larry the dog is disproportionate (big nose, loooong tail) and a mix of too many kinds of breeds to even properly indentify them all. Needless to say Zach is a little disappointed, that is until he discovers that his dog has a magical tail! Larry's tail helps Zach out of more than a few close calls involving a bee, a bully, and even serving as an alarm clock of sorts to wake Zach before the birthda ...more

"It's a little bit of everything. Part Labrador, part Brittany spaniel, part cadoodle, part dachshund, and maybe a little bit terrier."

It wasn't exactly the kind of dog Zach was hoping for. And who names their dog Larry? But crazy things start to happen when Larry comes into their lives. Could it be as a result of that silly dog's weird looking tail? "... my dog started moving his tail in these wild figure eights. I'm not kidding, almost like karate moves, like kung fu but cooler --- like dog fu

Fun little chapter book, great for boys graduating from easy reader. This book is about a boy who gets a new dog named Larry. Larry happens to be a bit of a mutt. At first Zach is not so crazy about this mutt dog. But funny things start happening when Larry shakes his tail and Zach starts to change his mind. When Larry helps clinch the deal on Zach gaining a new best friend, Zach decides this dog is O.K.!

Endearing premise and writing style, but lacks much of a plot other than

"Zach doesn't like his new dog Larry until he finds out his dog can do some cool tricks... Zach thinks Larry is magic, and they become friends. The End."

Seriously. That's it. Would have rated higher if there was some sort of exciting climax and solution.

Good illustrated short first chapter book about a dog that might or might not have a magic tail. It all starts when a boy gets a dog that is not what he hoped for, but sometimes the best things are not we hoped for. Each short chapter starts out with a good lead in that will make readers want to keep reading the chapter.
The Library Lady
Nice if not extraordinary little early novel for dog loving kids. Zach's new dog isn't exactly what he wanted in a dog. He may or may not have a "magical" tail. But after a few days with him, he is very much Zach's dog.
Gail
Kids were surprised that it ended so soon, they thought there should have been more with the dog and his "magic" tail. I didn't feel like there was enough of a story and I also wasn't happy with how they portrayed his cousin with allergies.
Beth
The boy's voice is not really that of an 1st grader, maybe more 3rd to 4th. But the story is only 35p long, so maybe it's for reluctant readers? And he's kinda a jerk...but the idea is fun: Does my dog have a magic tail?

I didn't finish reading it out loud and my son's didn't care.

It's about a dog who is part of every type of dog. It has magic in its tail.
Edward Sullivan
Cute mutt with a magical tail.
Bridget
Adorable read about a boy who is disappointed in his new mutt, Larry, until Larry's magic talents help him prove that he's got the boy's back.

Listened to this with my boys during our Easter road trip to visit family. Maybe it was audio version...but I wasn't impressed. Overly simple, even for a childrens book. No real story here.

When Zach's parents surprise him with Larry, "the used dog" it's not what he expected at all. Will he love his new pooch? Read and find out.

Cute.

Kid gets a dog he's not too excited about, but discovers its hidden talents.

Annoying "nerdy kid" stereotype. Otherwise, cute. And check out the author pics in the back. :-)

Cute early chapter book about a boy whose parents adopt a dog, but it's not the dog he's been dreaming of. As times goes by this dog helps out in several ways almost as if he is magic.
