Enticed by His Forgotten Lover is the first book in the Pregnancy & Passion series, and while I can't say I'm a huge fan of Maya Banks’ books, this one is definitely a hit! It’s a heartwarming tale about what happens when a man gets a second chance and is willing to do whatever he has to, to have a future with the one person in this world who makes him feel things he’s never felt before – true, passionate, soul deep love, and the need to be a better man.

A quick read. One of the better category romances that I've read. Rafael, the hero, has amnesia. He cannot remember a month of his life from about 4 months before, due to a plane crash. He is at a party when a woman is staring at him and he makes the mistake of going up to her and ask "Have we met?". Well, we learn that Rafe has been busy and is going to be a father soon. Things are a bit predictable in how it turns out but I was a little surprise at certain events.

Ms Banks is a solid writer and you can pretty guarantee that her works will be well written and interesting and in usual fashion this one didn't disappoint!

Ok we have definately read the plot line many times as it is very much a Harlequin favourite but Ms Banks' spin and talent makes it different. 4.5 stars. I’m more of a Presents gal than Desires, but it’s hard to go wrong with an amnesiac starchy hero. And indeed, except for a few oddly constructed sentences, there’s not a thing wrong with this story.

One thing you need to learn about Ms. Banks. She doesn't believe in gently leading the reader into the storyline. She likes to start as if you just walked in to the scene, and it's a style that I particularly enjoy, especially with the shorter stories. In short stories or a shorter category form I sometimes feel authors take too long to give you the setup. Ms. Banks expects you to pay attention and catch up. I like it. By the same token, I have always enjoyed the Harlequin Desire books, as they are usually quick, but satisfying reads, and I am pleased to say these lived up to my expectations.

The first book, Enticed By His Forgotten Lover starts out at a cocktail party where we quickly learn Rafe has been in accident and has lost any memory of the last month of his life. Across the room he sees a woman who intrigues him and who seems vaguely familiar. He crosses the room and asks her if they've met. She slugs him and leaves him standing there. By the time he catches up, all that's left are her two sparkling shoes on the stairs. We're only on page 11. See what I mean? Rafe and Bryony (how DO you say that name?) are a great couple. She's pregnant and claims it's his. He has no memory of her. Together they try to relive their time to help him get his memory back. They fall in love and he learns it's okay to relax once in a while, and Kelly has no problems putting Rafe in his place when she feels he needs it. Trouble comes fast when he remembers...well, I'll let you learn what that is yourself. Just know that it'll break your heart.

The next book, Wanted By Her Lost Love is Ryan and Kelly's book. She's pregnant (of course) and he's not sure if it's his or not, but when he finds her, she's at risk of losing the baby and is undernourished and at her financial end. While this story made me cry on more than one occasion, I had a hard time believing that a woman with a pregnancy as precarious as hers was would be allowed to fly as often as she does during this book. I thoroughly enjoyed the final resolution in this book. Often an author will soften a consequence of actions or forgive a character who has been so cruel and unkind, but I liked that Ms. Banks, and her characters, didn't back down. There WERE consequences, serious ones, and there was very little angst or emotional conflict at doing what needed to be done.

The third book, Tempted By Her Innocent Kiss, is my favorite. Ms. Banks has been referring to Devon and Ashley as Grumpy and Sparkly for months now, and she's absolutely right. She does sparkle and he IS grumpy. Once again, Ms. Banks tosses us into the middle of the relationship and expects us to catch up. From the last two books we know that Ashley's father wants Devon to marry her before they close a business deal. At the start of the book, he proposes, she agrees, they have a wonderful wedding and now it's their wedding night, and Ashley discovers the truth about her marriage. Because of Grumpy, Sparkly no longer shines. Luckily, Grumpy is not Dopey, and figures out what he's done, but it takes him a while to figure out how to fix it. And he grovels. A LOT. Oh, boy, does he grovel. And because Sparkly is also not Dopey. She lets him. Eventually they get it together, and Sparkly gets her Sparkly Happy Ever After with her Grumpy. I wouldn't expect anything less from Sparkly.

The last book, Undone By Her Tender Touch, is Cam and Pippa. Cam comes across as a cold, unfeeling player. Someone who sleeps with women and discards them before any one of them has a chance to get close. Pippa's okay with that, at first, but once the pregnancy test comes back positive, everything changes for her. Her priorities have shifted and she needs someone in her life who will be there, no matter what, and she's not sure if Cam's that man. Cam, for his part, has his reasons for his behavior, and while they're valid reasons, it's time for him to move on and come back to the land of the living. Luckily, Pippa's just what he needs.

I'm a big believer in the theory you can never have too much grovel, and these books prove me right. Ms. Banks has no problem making her heroes grovel properly, and she allows her heroines to let the men suffer. She doesn't let the hero get away with "Oh, oops. Sorry I hurt you. I didn't mean it and it will never happen again." Her heroines don't blindly accept those apologies. The women make the men WORK to gain back the trust they lost, as they should! The heroes in these books all do things at some point that really hurt the women they claim to care for, but thankfully, they all realize it nearly immediately and know their women are worth everything they have to do to win them back. Even if it means some serious groveling.

With books as brief as the Harlequin Desires, and when you have a series of four books set around four male friends, it's easy to get overloaded with characters. Again, this is something Ms. Banks excels at. She gives us enough of a glimpse at the men to appreciate their relationship with each other and for it to feel real, but we never get bogged down with all. these. people. With Ms. Banks, it's almost like she's a minimalist writer. Rather than paint the scene clearly, she gives us an evocative sketch. She gives exactly enough information for us to connect with everyone, but not so much that the story suffers or drags. These books are fast-paced, well-written and incredibly enjoyable. I read all four in two days and loved all of them. Definitely worth the read.

But Grumpy and Sparkly are still my favorites.

First off I have to say I had a hard time swallowing the concept of a hidden pregnancy and amnesia. Rafe suffers from short-term amnesia, meaning he’s only forgotten the last 4 months or so of his life rather than the whole thing. Conveniently, the only space of time he’s known Bryony. Did I mention the amnesia occurred because of his plane crashing on his way back to New York from Bryony’s island home. No need to worry, mere months later Rafe only suffers from amnesia…no major physical injury attained during the PLANE CRASH.

This is where I have to remember that I read, only a month ago, a story in which a time traveling Scottish Laird saves a woman and baby in a plane crash (no injury sustained) with only the sheer power of his arms. This is only one of the major tragic events that befall this couple within their single week together – falling in love. I thought it helped support their instalove. I must give Bryony and Rafe a little leeway…Maybe if one of them was a magical time traveler?…

But back to the story. I think I’m torn because:

A. This is actually not the weirdest romance plot I’ve ever come across…contemp or otherwise, so why can’t I let these dramatic plot points go?

B. The author has a good base for a story. The character motivations are clear and understandable.

I think for the amnesia to have worked for me the author needed to take it further. Rafe openly admits he thinks it’s a little ridiculous that he suffers from the ailment. But he fails to remember Bryony in any way. No smell recognition (perfume, hair, etc.), no touch recognition, no “feeling in the bones”, nothing. Yet, the author makes Rafe instantly protective of her. It just didn’t fit. You can’t say you have no connection to someone then play the “instinctively protective” card and the “no connection” card at the same time. Further, to start the book with a prologue of time on the island…or the plane crash…Bryony waiting by the phone. Giving the reader some basis for their relationship would have been extremely helpful from a plot point of view. I do realize that later in the book things turn out differently than we expect, but I still think a prologue could have been done.

This lack of prepping the reader for major plot points continued throughout the book. It was as if the plot was nothing but major scenes with none of the downtime to develop emotions or deeper understanding of the characters. This disappointed me because in all honesty as wild as the plot sounds Banks really could have made it work. The plot points were there, character motivation was good she just didn’t have the finer details down.

The strongest relationship in the whole book was Bryony and her grandmother. There was smooth dialogue and genuine warm feelings between the two. Rafe and Bryony were a rushed romance…which you think makes sense because of the whole amnesia thing…but then the ending kinda blows that theory out of the water and you’re left scratching your head as to how they fell in love so quickly…

But…

If I take this book with a grain of salt (as is my vow in this experiment) it was an easy evening of reading. At less than 200 pages I was on a roller coaster of pleasant trashiness. And one to be honest, I enjoyed enough to continue on with the series. It really is Banks’ ability to create a solid story idea – even if the execution fails a bit – that is deliciously trope filled. It’s like watching day-time reality tv. Pretty rough, but I dare you to look away.

Rating: 2.5/5 You can’t possibly refuse a few short hours of your day to a title like Enticed by his Forgotten Lover…you know you gotta read it. (less)

Review:

I have to start by saying I love Maya Banks and I've read most of her books but not the ones from Harlequin. This one basically stayed in tune with her normal style but it was a little bit different because it's a harlequin romance. That being said this book was really predictable. I pretty much had it figured out before I was even half way through. It was really cheesy and mooshy but still a very sweet romance.

Rafe was a good character but he came across as a real jerk the first half of the book. I had a hard time liking him even when he was being really sweet and caring with Bryony. And Bryony, there are two main words that come to mind when I think of her, naive and gullible. That girl would fall for anything or at least that's how she acted. I mean come on, every sweet word out of Rafes mouth, she believed. I would have been really really put off by the whole thing. But like I said, it's a harlequin romance and that's usually how they are so I dealt with it and tried to look beyond the perfect fairytale feel of it.

I give this book 3 stars, only because giving it more seems unfair to the really good books out there that deserve that many stars, but I did like it. I will still be looking forward to the next books in the series because I really want to know what happens with Rafes friends. Those guys should make for very entertaining stories.

Amnesia plots attract me like train wrecks; I think it goes back to my days of watching daytime television. This book could have been a soap opera storyline for sure; Rafael, the rich executive hiding his amnesia, Bryony, the not-so-rich island girl who is carrying his baby, and all the tension that results from each of them suspecting the other could be lying while, at the same time, feeling instinctively that's not the case. This book could have been a soap opera storyline for sure; Rafael, the rich executive hiding his amnesia, Bryony, the not-so-rich island girl who is carrying his baby, and all the tension that results from each of them suspecting the other could be lying while, at the same time, feeling instinctively that's not the case. So of course the way to resolve the issue is for Rafael to return with Bryony to her island home to see if she can jog his memory and convince him that before the plane crash that took his memory, he had decided to give up his multi-million dollar development plans for the property she sold him. That decision, to resolve the problem by going to "relive those weeks" was very sudden and really came out of left field for me -- 21 pages into the story. (It then took another 50 pages to get them anywhere near the island, and I kept thinking that the character development that happened waiting in traffic could just as easily have happened while waiting for test results.)

A related issue early in the book kept bugging me. With all his money and influence, Rafael doesn't insist on a paternity test when a women he doesn't remember ever meeting claims to be pregnant by him, and what he does remember of his sex life is that he ALWAYS uses a condom. I didn't understand that plot point at all. In fact a lot of what each main character claims to the other could be easily proven or disproven with the sharing of some medical and legal information, and it bothered me that they didn't explore that more prosaic route towards trust as well. Common sense goes a long way for me in romance, especially when both main characters are supposed to be smart people.

I also didn't enjoy Rafael's friends (sequel bait, I assume). They were alternately bullying and understanding, but in ways that seemed more about plot convenience than character consistency. I ended the book without feeling that I knew either of them very well, nor much desire (ha!) to read their books.

What I liked about the book is harder to express. I found the storytelling compelling, and the handling of the secondary folksy islanders was actually fun and not cloying, and the sexual chemistry and rediscovery aspect of the story worked well. But what I really liked was the daring resolution, which I will not spoil. A little more than halfway through the book, I started really wondering how the central question would be resolved; a few pages later, Rafael articulated the question (to himself) in a way that made me stop reading for a minute and really consider the possible answers. My notes at this point in the book say "Wow! Will she dare?" (She meaning Maya Banks, the author.) And the answer is yes, she dared -- and it was a gutsy, emotionally wringing choice that made the last part of the book immensely satisfying to me. I can't give less than four stars to a book where the writer made the bold choice and made it work, even if I wish the set-up had been more careful and believable.(less)

This was an interesting story. It has both characters on shaky ground for most of the book and I did not know who I felt more badly for. Bryony is meeting the man of her future babe and the one she fell in love with who has no idea who she is. Out of frustration Rafe is constantly saying things that hurt Bryony without meaning too. 3 1/2 stars. This is a good start to pregnancy and passion series, and Maya Banks actually surprised me with a twist in this story. Ms. Banks gets an A plus for plot uniqueness. This story has been told before but not quite like this. It's the story of a young woman and man meeting for business purposes and falling in love, or are they? OMG, I am not going to waste any more time on this overstuffed-with-clichés piece o' crap book than I already have by reading it. But I will anyway since my ass is parked on the sofa and I don't have my next book at hand.

Boring. Dull. Unbelievably trite and clichéd down to the dialogue. If you were to write a "Rich Asshole Knocks Up Sweet Thing" romance with every clichéd turn of phrase you could recall, then you'd have this little gem by Maya Banks.

The future series bait was obvious and lame....more

To be honest, I was wary of starting this series. It sounded really cheesy, Maya Bank's highlander series was a prime example of that, and I wasn't exactly fond of the pregnancy idea. I just don't buy Rafe's transformation. He is a jerk with the emotional maturity of a 12 year old. The writing is very good and Bryony is a great heroine except she keeps going back to idiot Rafe when she should have just cut her losses. I think that is the problem I have with MB's category. Her heroines are outstanding but her heros just never measure up. Sure they are sorry, eventually, but compared to the trials the heroines go through, they just have no depth and I can't find any empathy for...more

Rafael is a ruthless business man. He has acquired a piece of property that he is getting ready to develop, if he can hide the fact that he has selective amnesia. His best friends and business partners have been feeding him the information needed so his investor’s won’t lose faith in him. He is managing well, until a pregnant woman confronts him at the party and threatens to blow it all.

Bryony can’t believe she’s actually standing face to face with Rafe but something isn’t right. He doesn’t remember her or their time together on the island. She is devastated and just wants to go home and hide. Rafe agrees to return to the island with her to see if it will jog his memory. She’s afraid to get her hopes up but she’s even more afraid of being hurt all over again.

Bryony is such a feisty heroine. She is upset that Rafe doesn’t remember her, yet she doesn’t take any of his bull either. She loves him and was devastated when he didn’t return. She doesn’t know what she is going to do but you see the momma bear coming out in her when it comes to her baby. She has faith in Rafe and believes that their time together helped to make him a better person. She sees the inherent good in people and when she loves, she loves deeply.

Rafe is a very powerful businessman that relies on his best friends/business partners for support. He is not afraid to go after what he wants, no matter the costs. He is single and likes it that way, until the feisty Bryony shows up. She is not his typical type but there is something about her that pulls him in. While on the island, he becomes someone he doesn’t recognize but really likes. She has faith in him that he can change and he wants to – for her. When his memory returns, he realizes what a jerk he was to Bryony. He is willing to do whatever it takes to make it up to her, even if it cost him his reputation.

These two are a perfect match for each other. It is obvious from the beginning that there is a connection between the two. I was not expecting the twist at the end but love how everything worked out. The secondary characters were a needed addition since they will be featured in future books.

I can’t wait to read the next installment (downloaded it today) and hope that we will continue to find out more about Rafe in Bryony in the future books. Maya Banks is a favorite author of mine and this one did not disappoint. I give Enticed by His Forgotten Lover 4 Flaming Hearts. (less)

Entertaing story. Kept my interest till 2 am.
Rafael has his own company. He is having a busness party for his investors. He is surrounded by his partners Ryan, Devon and Cam. He has been friends and partners since collage. He trusts them. No one else knows that he has no memory of a months or so after his plane crash.

I love Maya Banks’ writing style; she manages to captivate me without difficulty. It was my first attempt with this collection and i was a bit afraid it was going to be too hot for me but with this author no problem oh it’s erotic yes but it’s so well written that you can overcome your apprehension easily.
