Readers who need a good pick me up read
This is a really good 4.5 star read. It doesn’t make 5 stars because it’s missing just a little bit in the steam department I thought. It’s one of those books that has you smiling from beginning to end—so don’t read it in public unless you don’t mind having a dorky smile plastered on your face and people no doubt staring at you like you’re a bit weird ;-)
It’s well written, funny and you just can’t help but love the Bridgerton family but it’s not in the least bit...more

I loved this book! I read it several years ago, but I've read so many comments recently here on Goodreads about Julia Quinn's Bridgerton series that I just had to re-read them all.
This is Daphne's story. Daphne is the fourth of the eight Bridgerton siblings. As the oldest daughter, she is being pressured by her mother to choose a husband and get married. (The mother, Violet, is a wonderful character -- I absolutely love her!) Enter Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings, who is a friend of...more

Fantastic book! I read this one years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it but for some strange reason I never kept up with the series (I think I read 1 or 2). My library was recommended the series (they don't buy too many HR) and I remembered the Duke and I and decided to buy the series for myself. Of course me being me, I had to wait to get the whole series before starting to read it. Well worth the wait.

Julia Quinn has the ability to write some of the funniest and most realistic dialogue. I've really enjoyed her Bridgerton series and the "Duke and I" is (so far) one of my favorites.
I really like the fact that Julia Quinn can take a predictable, over-used plot and put a spin on it, claiming it as her own. Simon Basset at first appears to be your typical cliched', tortured hero. Denied the love and affection of his father because of a childhood stutter, Simon eventually ove...more

A sweet, romantic historical. I've read this series completely out of order, but they all work as a stand alone. This is one of the best in the series (Viscount Who Loved Me is another big fav)

(#1 in the Bridgerton Series)
Another fine example of Julia Quinn's amazing prologues. This one was about Simon (another of Lady Danbury's nephews), who has a BIG ISSUE with his father. (His mother died during childbirth, so wasn't around to mediate.) You see, Simon didn't speak until he was four (although he could already write) and when he DID, he stuttered REALLY BADLY, and his father, who had been soooo excited to have an heir (after two stillbirths and three miscarriages), dism...more

I enjoyed the entire Bridgerton Series and re-read this book thinking I would start re-reading the series, too. The whole series is wonderful, funny, well written--strictly romance. Nice stories.
Some authors write books, but a few WRITE BOOKS. Ms. Quinn has a knack for building up the plot, writing well rounded characters, nice climax and ending. Nice! All very well written.

It was good. I love a good sarcasm, especially when the characters are as witty and loving as Daphne Bridgerton. And frankly I admire their parents named them - Alphebatized of course. Anthony, Benedict, Collin, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, Gregory and Hyacinth. It's easier to remember. Nonetheless, my enjoyment quite faded when Simon and Daphne married, there were sarcastic remarks, yes, but not as good as the ones before it. I like the book, I'm always a sucker for happy endings and the English ...more

Ah my Gentle Reader, this Reviewer is pleased to report, that one cannot argue against; I loved this book.
It was fun to read about Simon and Daphne finding each other through angry brothers, duels, crazy marriage mind mamas and a few misunderstandings along the way. The banter between the was laugh out loud funny as were some of the arguments .

This is the first one that I read in the Bridgerton series and although not my favorite (To Sir Phillip or Brighter than the Sun I liked better), it's a solid story. Julia Quinn's writing is light, breezy and humorous. I like that most of her heroines are usually of "spinster" age and not the breakout beauty of the season. It makes the characters so easy to relate to and root for. I do recommend not reading all 8 of the Bridgerton series in a row as it may become a bit tedious. And...more

I liked the book. This was one of those quick reads. Book 1 of the Bridgerton series for this author. The AAR website sensuality ratings is right. Moderately explicit sensuality. While our lovers do make love, and the reader is there with them, physical details are described, but are not graphically depicted. Much is left to the reader's imagination and/or possibly the use of euphemistic "code words." But what's most important are feelings and emotions, not body parts. While there i...more

I didn't giggle in delight (one sign of a 4 star book), but there's a lot to love in this story:
-Alphabetical Children (it grows on you, and is quite helpful is keeping them straight...although I hate names Benedict and Belinda...yuck, Eloise is pretty bad too)
-Delightful, witty conversation that helps you fall in love with the characters and provides a more developed relationship
-A sensible, flawed, and wonderful heroine

Simon Basset was born Earl Clyvedon, though it was really just a courtesy title until his father died and he became Duke of Hastings. Simon had problems with his speech as a youth, not uttering his first word until he was 4 years old, causing his father to think him an idiot and his worst failure.
Daphne Bridgerton was the fourth of 8 children, and on her second season out in society. It wasn't that she wasn't a pretty girl, or that she lacked wit or candor, but for some reason men th...more

Oh, did I ever enjoy this one!
I thought it was great! I truly did! I liked the characters - their quick and witty repartee. Daphne was not a ditz in any way; witty, intelligent, strong in mind as well as body (you'll get that when you read it, LOL!). She broke through Simon's shell and I don't think anyone else could have. Simon - I felt bad for him. No child should ever be treated as he was. He grows up to be a very intelligent and well-spoken man, just as witty, and I liked his man...more

I was a bit undecided about how to grade The Duke and I. I had fond memories of my previous reading of Quinn's Bridgerton books. They were, I believe, my first family series and among my first keepers. I still remember how excited I was when the first ones came out and we were all trying to guess who Lady Whistledown was! I had never reread them and so, naturally, the first one became a part of my rereading challenge.

This is the first book of Bridgerton Series which is about Daphne Bridgerton (the fourth sibling, Bridgerton siblings are named following the alphabet A-H). Daphne had to face the reality that she was not a success in her society debut. It's not because she is ugly, boring or anything. The problem is she was too nice and easy to talk to that the gentlemen regarded her as friend instead of possible bride. Of course having 3 protective elder brothers (Anthony, Benedict, and Colin) didn't help the ...more

Simon Basset is the talk of the town (or at least all of the ambitious Society mothers). The Devastating Duke has captured the imaginations of the ton with his dashing good looks, his ironic wit, and, perhaps most importantly, his unmarried status. To escape his ever-growing circle of admirers, Simon proposes a fake attachment to his best friend's sister Daphne Bridgerton.

(I'm on a Regency rereading kick.)
It's strange to read this one again, knowing how all the other Bridgertons turn out, and seeing early Whistledown columns and the introductions of characters I know will be around for many many books (Lady Danbury! Penelope!). It's like looking at your high school play pictures or something. :)
Simon's always been one of my favorite Quinn heroes--the combination of intensity and vulnerability just gets me every time.

Every once in awhile I get the hankering for a historical romance. What happened after I read this book was unprecedented. I wanted to know what happened to everyone in this family so I gobbled up the rest of the books in no time. Not sure if I'll ever get the urge to read the series again but I can still remember how much I was dying for the next installment of every book at the time I was engrossed by this author.
