"On the sixth of April, in the year 1812 - precisely two days before her sixteenth birthday - Penelope Featherington fell in love. But Colin Bridgerton certainly didn't fall in love with her in 1812 (and not in 1813, 1814, 1815, or - oh blast, not in all the years 1816-1822, either, and certainly not in 1823, when he was out of the country the whole time, anyway." Penelope Featherington has secretly adored her best friend's brother for...well, it feels like forever. After half a lifeti...more

I started reading this to try to de-stress. I've never actually read an out-and-out romance before, but I heard Quinn wrote fluffy and fun regencies, and her style, at least at the beginning, was lively and engaging. However, as the novel progressed, more and more things began to annoy me. First, Quinn does something with POV that really bothers me, and which I am trying to delicately explain here without giving away the book's central mystery, slight as it is. Basically, Quinn has a reve...more

Romancing Mister Bridgerton - G+
Julia Quinn
Sensuality: 7
Penelope Featherington fell madly, hopelessly in love with Colin Bridgerton two days before her 16th birthday. Unfortunately, Colin has always seen Penelope as the plump, shy best friend of his younger sister. By the time Penelope is 28 and a seasoned member of the English ton, she's accepted that her love for Colin is destined to remain unrequited and she shall be a spinster forever. Fate, however, has other plans. When Lady Whistle...more

Best line: "Next time you want to complain about the trials and tribulations of universal adoration, try being an on-the-shelf-spinster for a day." (100)
In the fourth Bridgerton book, Colin Bridgerton returns from another series of travels and finds himself quite frequently the subject of Lady Whistledown's column. He befriends his little sister's best friend, Penelope Featherington, because she's the one person he feels he can talk to about the difficulties of being a Bridgerton a...more

I go through stages: during my teen years, I devoured romance novels. I then soured on them so badly that I refused to pick up a romance for years. What I enjoyed the most about Romancing Mister Bridgerton is that it *isn't* anything at all like the romance novels I used to read. The book was light, and fun. Even the "dark secret" the book jacket promises to reveal about Colin is harmless.
In fact, Colin is remarkably *nice* for a romantic hero. He has flaws, but none of the...more

(#4 in the Bridgerton Series)
I had very high expectations for this book, and I was a little let down. I was SOOO looking forward to Colin's story, since he was SO GREAT and SO FUNNY in Book 2. But the book wasn't very funny. It was a good story and a lot of stuff happens, actually, but I didn't think it was as funny as it should have been. Maybe that's because Penelope Featherington isn't extremely funny? Or maybe because Colin was wanting to be taken seriously? I'm just not too sure. ...more

I'm not sure why, but Romancing Mister Bridgerton is one of my favourite romance novels. It's book 4 of a long series and features my favourite pairing of the entire family.
Penelope Featherington is a sensible girl who has spent the last 12 years of her life in love with Colin Bridgerton and has become comfortable in her spinsterhood life at the age of 28. The novel spans their entire relationship from meeting to the inevitable marriage but does it in a way that just sweeps you along.

I'd heard good things about Julia Quinn from the excellent website Smart Bitches, Trashy Books, and I grabbed this book, which comes in the middle of the Bridgerton series. Very funny in a couple of places, dry and witty all the way through, and without the predictable "nearly-deal-breaker misunderstanding 3/4 of the way through" that drives me so crazy in some romance novels. I did think Colin Bridgerton was a little too angsty about nothing in places, but I imagine that the pr...more

This may be my favorite Julia Quinn. Penelope is a dry witted heroine accepting of her place in this world--only she's not who everyone thinks she is. There's so much more under the surface of the heroine and, as a consequence, the book feels deeper and the story more fleshed out. It doesn't rely of a forced mystery, but rather a shy heroine afraid no one will accept her for the wonderful, well-rounded person she really is.
Colin is a good hero. If you read the books in order, you get a g...more

I was disappointed in this book. I was really looking forward to it because I liked the title (it makes me laugh), and I like the series, and I thought it would be really good. It's not that it was bad, it was OK, but not great. Not something I think I'll ever read again in the future.
First of all, all of the conflicts in the book boil down to two things - the jealousy of an unpublished author who never really wanted to publish until very recently for another author, and the disappointed ...more

I took a break from PN and erotica and looked through my 100 or so TBR books that I haven't packed yet (we're moving this summer) and came up with Julia Quinn, my first experience with this author. I had seen this book recommended on Amazon and picked it up for a quarter at the thrift store, and I'm so glad I did; I really enjoyed it! Sweet, poignant, romantic, fulfilling, and a truly satisfying HEA. Not a lot of steam, but what was there fit the story perfectly. Now I have the dilemma of whe...more

I was kind of disappointed that Lady Whistledown was unveiled so quickly. And I had thought it to be Lady Danbury; I was a little disappointed on that score, I so desperately wanted it to be her. But it made sense that it was Penelope. After all, Lady Whistledown was always very concerned with the comings and goings of the Bridgerton brood, Colin especially.
Other than that I loved the book. Colin was his ever charming self and Penelope was full of wit and sarcasm. Who knew?

I'm getting worried that the contemporary writers will stop by and read these reviews. It actually seems extremely likely.
This is my favorite Julia Quinn novel. She's actually really funny and manages to liven up these romance novel conventions very well. I like this one because I like the personality of the hero who is very fun; and I kind of tired of the brooding type.

I adore this book but I'm also a bit disappointed. I had sort of hoped that Lady Whistledown would never be reveled. Oh well, it's a sweet book none the less. I thought the way that Penelope fell in love with Colin was brilliant. Of course my favorite character through the entire thing was Hyacinth. Glooo. *g*

I loved this book as all of the others in the series. Julia Quinn is an amazing author. Her character come to life and you a drawn into the regency era. Julia Quinn is a very witty writer and is able to make her reader laugh and giggle out loud with her strong heroines.

I was really rooting for Penelope and Colin and this book was not a let down at all. I think Penelope's situation could have been handled differently, but it was still good all the same.

I love Julia Quinn and the Bridgerton series, but there was something about this particular Bridgerton Sibling book that I think was the best. I love the Colin/Penelope romance!!

Penelope has three problems: 1. her mother dresses her in horrible colors, 2. she has a crush on her best friend's brother, and 3. she has a secret identity. What's a girl to do...

I've read most if not all of Julia Quinn's books and this one is my favorite. I love Lady Whistledown and am glad she got a story of her own and we discover who she is!
