Mark Watson thought high school was hell enough as it was, but when he starts seeing visions of a young boy from the 50’s that was kidnapped and forced to watch a series of grisly murders, he’ll find out that the supernatural force behind those killings has plans to show him that there are worse hells than bullies and gym class.

It shouldn’t be a surprise to him. Everything...more

I have a few things to say:

1. I read this book in a single setting. Despite the lags here and there, the plot had enough grip to say, please, please just wait, I know it is slow, but wait till you get to the end.
And I did want to see what happened at the end.

2. The title and the cover both are spooky. Yeah?
The story is spookier by 10 folds

3. I always root for the underdog but I wished Mark would not pull himself down like it's his duty to do so.

4. The editing could have been tighter, crispier an...more

When I was a teenager I used to have this horrible reoccurring dream. I was always running from something, a person, a ghost, an abnormally large tomato with teeth, (the “what” is not really important) what is important is that I always got caught. I never saw my death (thank God for small miracles) but I did get to go to my funeral. My very empty, no one was there, dear Lord this is a waste of Father Mackelhaney’s time, empty. I would walk very slowly up the aisle to where my (extremely F*cking...more

Based on reading first 5 chapters: Horror/ Supernatural Story with Strong Characters

10-year-old Darren is playing a neighborhood baseball game when the ball flies into the yard of the creepiest house around. The house is right across the street from his house, he can see it from the window of his room, at night he could swear it’s actually staring at him.

Without realizing it he runs after the fly ball hoping he can get it in time to get Ralphie out. Late that night a strange visitor explodes fr...more

I received this book from the Author for my honest review.

This story was a very well thought out and intricate. The story begins with a boy who goes into the house of the neighbour to retrieve a ball. He sees a shoe lying on the ground. Realizes where he is and runs out of the yard after viewing an eye through the basement window. That night something comes into his room and he hears singing of Rosemary Clooney’s song “Come on-a my house, my house-a come on . . .” as he feels his lungs crushing...more

Shadow of the past is creepy, seriously creepy. Like, stop reading, look around, make sure you're still alone, and then wish someone else was home with you creepy. Maybe I'm just a scaredy cat...but the song creeps me out. ::shuddering::

The story starts of with a bang. Literally creates a black hole and sucks you in. The next handful of chapters are a little slow, but if you work your way through them, you get to the good stuff again. This story is a real page turner. Its hard to put down. The p...more

Shadow of the Past has a few things going for it. Cleveland knows how to create a mood, and the characterizations are good. The story works toward an interesting and well-thought-out conclusion. The scenes with the Shadow Man are well-played. Pleasantly unpleasant.

My biggest gripe here is with some of the verbal excess in the book, by which I mean some of the scenes go on far too long, with some redundancies. A great deal of interaction between Mark and Christine is repetitive, and pushes Mark's...more

I really do not know how to review this book. The story line kept you at the edge of your seat waiting to see what will happen next and how the book will end. There was some parts of the book that was a little drawn out; but not bad where you wanted to stop reading. I liked that there was many twists and turns that made you rethink what was happening. The author is very descriptive with words that allows your vividly see the book in your head. The only reason why I gave this book only 3 stars wa...more

“Shadow of the Past” reads like the monstrous offspring of a Stephen King book and a John Hughes movie. It is as much about the horror of adolescence, as it a work of speculative fiction. Author Thacher E. Cleveland offers up the character of Mark like a sacrificial lamb to a cruel god. Mark negotiates the paranormal as well as the cruel seas of high school with a humor and vulnerability that will make you want to protect him. Warning: You cannot protect him!

Well to say the least this book was entertaining there was a few parts the just went on and on and it seemed like it was never going to end. It needed a bit more spark to the story line other than that this was a really great book.

Wow. This was incredible. Cleveland weaves a perfect amount of horror, mystery, drama, and action together to provide a truly engrossing reading experience. It's just absolutely incredible. A MUST READ!
