SO GOOD! I was disappointed with the previous book but this one got me obsessed about the series all over again. Of course I loved this book so much because it was mostly about Raphael and Cyn, **sigh, which are one of the best couples I have been reading about lately. While the book is called Sophia and introduces us to a new couple, that relationship is almost quickly and shallowly described. And I'm ashamed to say that this was what I loved the most about the book because it meant more Raphael and Cyn time, lol. I admire them individually, but I glorify even more about them as a couple. Raphael will always be the most powerful and scariest vampire around while Cyn will remain the most kick-ass female, and it just works perfectly for them this way. They may be almighty and unreachable for most people but with each other they are PERFECT. You can really see how crazy they are about each other and how NOTHING will ever get between them. **SIGH, I just can't get enough of them.

DID I FORGET TO MENTION SOMETHING ABOUT THE PLOT? sorry about that, I guess I got TOO FOCUSED on CYN AND RAPHAEL, lol.
In this installment we see how Raphael and Cyn help Sophia to find the missing Canadian Lord and solving some vampire murders. Sophie is the Canadian Lord's most powerful child and is summoned by him to get things right after he makes a mess of everything. The Canadian Lord is not like Raphael, he's lazy, shallow and uncaring of his children. He leaves Sophie to solve this huge mess he has created and sends the killers to Raphael's territory because he knows raphael is stronger and can beat them while he can't. Raphael wasn't waiting for this killers to come and some terrible things will happen to his people.

Be ready for a lot of action, romance and some weeping,lol. This book has it all. Another amazing read from this author. Can't wait to read the next. I seriously hope more books are to come because I will never get bored of reading about this terrific couple.(less)

4 1/2 stars. I just love this series. It will be one of these that grow in time to be one of everyone's favorites, mark my words. It just needs to be 'discovered' by the masses. Wonderful word building. Cyn and Raphael thread throughout the series, and their relationship grows each book. Honestly, this book has more of them in it than Sophia and Colin, but their romance gets plenty of screen time.

I'm just gonna give this a 5 star just because there is so much of Cyn's and Raphael's page time. I would never have guess Murphy will still continue writing on them. I thought they got their HEA and be done with. If you are wondering who are Cyn and Raphael, they are the couple from Book 1 and 2. Although the story of Sophia and Colin started in this book 4, almost half the book is about Cyn and Raphael, so if you miss the book 1 and 2, I felt this book will not be as good.

Sophia is a lone vampire residing in Central America and was summoned back to Vancouver by her Sire, Lord Lucien. Only to find a letter left by her Sire when she arrived. It details on tragedy happening to the vampire community and he won't be available to sort out the mess. This lead Sophia into Lord Raphael's territory.

Colin was an ex-SEAL residing in Northwest coast as a local enforcer. He walked into an aftermath of vampire's mate being brutalized and was thus engage into the investigation of vampire being targeted for killing.

I grew suspicious of the way the story between Sophia and Colin going to develop because they only have half the page time and Cyn and Raphael practically steal the show (they even have more sex scene, mind you). So when Sophia and Colin first met in Raphael's compound, we were told that they had a history a decade ago, I was like 'okay, that will definitely speed things up'. Their history was definitely not mentioned at all in previous books. Ten years ago, they were an item and Sophia took an opportunity to fake her death in order to leave Colin because of her being a vampire. Colin didn't knew her identity back then. I'm not sure I like their relationship because Sophia is obviously an alpha female who is rising to take over Lord Lucien's throne. While, Colin is not a beta hero either. So their vibe felt off to me.

Now back to my favorite couple Cyn and Raphael. Can they be even more lovely together? Sometimes I forgotten that Raphael is a vampire because he act overtly protective of his mate is like a behavior of a shapeshifter. Any beings, human or otherwise who dare touch Cyn will suffered from wrath of Lord Raphael. That guy can basically cause small earthquake, I kid you not. He is the most scariest vampire hero that I came across.

Sometime Cyn can be so stubborn that I wanted her to stop acting like she is bulletproof, but maybe that is what she is. I'm not fond of reading them arguing the security issue over and over again. But after every argument, they kiss and make up and that's so sweet.

Since the vamps are asleep during daytime, this give some time for the humans, ie. Cyn and Colin to form a good partnership, along with Robbie, the human assign by Raphael as Cyn's bodyguard. I like Cyn and Colin interaction and how clueless he can be of vampires behavior and rules. Marco and Preston, the two vampires who belong to Raphael, are dead, killed by humans while they are asleep during the daylight. Cyn assist in the investigation along with Colin and Robbie during the day, and Raphael and his vamps hunt down the killers during the night. I'm excited to find out how Raphael is gonna kill the humans and I don't feel sick at all.

If you are fans of Cyn and Raphael, you should definitely grab this book. They are more in love than ever and you can see how committed they are to each other. I hope Murphy will continue with their story because I doubt I will ever gonna read another vampire that is gonna top Raphael on the badass level. (less)

As always, in order to be fair to D.B. Reynolds, I am going to declare up front that I am not a fan of paranormal romance. As far as Sophia goes, I do think it is the best book in the series that I have read to date.

Once Sophia arrives in Seattle, she learns that several more vampires are dead and one human mate was savagely raped. That is not the only surprise that awaits her, because investigating the murdered vampires, along with Cyn, and Raphael is Colin a former navy seal, whom Sophia has unresolved history with.

What I liked about this romance is that for once it wasn't a case of girl meets boy, some woo woo is interjected and then zmog, instant I lurves you forever. I think that we can all agree that, that approach to writing romance is old and tired. The other flip in this, is of course the fact that for once, the female in the relationship in question is the vampire, and the human is male. This led to a lot less paternalism in this relationship, because Colin was forced to confront the fact that despite Sophia's appearance, she most certainly is not a wilting little flower.

Of course we couldn't have the balanced relationship motif take over the entire book, just ensure that things were suitably filled with machismo once again the reader will have to suffer through pages of Raphael going on about his Cyn and needing to protect her. He controls her behaviour and threatens the death of her security if she does not comply. This sort of controlling behaviour often passes for love in paranormal romance but it is anything but. What it is, is a hallmark of abuse. To make matters worse, Cyn is predictably shot and must be saved by two men and then driven to the vampire compound to receive Lord Raphael's to survive her life threatening injuries. This of course ends up justifying all of his controlling behaviour. Oh, if only Cyn had been a good girl and sat pretty while the men were out investigating.

Cyn has always been the one to be constructed as the example of strong womanhood in this series, but she was far outstripped by Sophia this time. Cyn is powerful because she is the mate of a vampire lord whereas, Sophia becomes a vampire lord and is therefore powerful in her own right. No matter how many guns D.B. Reynolds has Cyn walk around in, she is still a human and therefore mortal. I think this is why it irked me that Cyn felt like it was her job to protect Raphael. I think that this was done to give her a small sense of power but in the end it came across as ridiculous. Raphael can rip out a heart out of someone's body, he break all the bones in a human body with a glance, and he can use his magic to set a body on fire. In the face of all that, the idea of Cyn wanting to play protector is ridiculous.

OMG...what a fantastic read. This series just keeps getting better and better. I loved Sophia with her strength and determination and her love for Colin. I loved Colin just a much for the same reasons. But let me tell you folks Raphael was off the charts; damn I can't even put in to words what I felt for him. Strong 2.5 to 3. Yes, the epilogue is nothing more than a set up for the next book ending with a tacky "to be continued" just like all the other books. Yes, I downgraded a star for it. In fairness to the book, however, if you skip the epilogue the books is fairly self contained, making allowances for the longer arc.

I can honestly say I enjoyed this book. I love getting back to the old school vampires with mega powers. Raphael is seriously "that dude". I love Juro and Duncan also. I also like Cyn. She's strong and independent but working on sharing her life with Raphael.

This story is a serious throwback to territorial disputes and bigotry against vampires. It was great to read something that was just a good story, great fight scenes, great displays of vampire power and a bit of intrigue.

This is one of these books which you can not judge by its cover. I don't really know who stands behind the decision to keep horrible covers for the whole series, but I would really want to strangle them.

I want to have these absolutely wonderful series in paperback standing proudly on my bookshelf, but with the covers like this? No way. Ranting aside I luuurve Vampires in America.

This book was about Sophia. A vampire called into the territory of her sire to "sort things out" and how along the way she meets and old flame and you get to learn about her story. You also get to experience a lot more about Raphael and his wonderful children as well as his mate Cyn. This book had me crying along the way as to what happens and how love can be so strong that it can crush your very heart.

Sophia is the strongest amongst her Sire's children but has spent more time enjoying her vampire existence in South America rather than working on strengthening her power. She is confident and feminine yet will not hesitate to use her abilities when needed. I liked that Sophia is not just another beautiful vampire seductress. Her past is tragic and the affection she has for Colin in genuine. I did have a slight problem with her. You read that she has power but I did not feel it as I do when I come across other characters like Raphael or Duncan or even other female characters like Cyn or Elke.

Colin may not be a vampire but that doesn't mean he'll hide when there is danger, which is what he finds during his search for those responsible for killing local vampires. He's clever, handsome and doesn't cower in the presence of commanding vampires such as Lord Raphael. I liked that his relationship with Sophia wasn't easy because it added depth to something that could have been just another sex based pairing that is common in this genre.

Vampire Lord Raphael and his mate Cyn are in Washington because two of his own have were murdered and he intends to find and punish all those responsible. Raphael is back and he is livid over the killings of his children. I feel like we get to see a different side of the vampire lord in this book. Cyn is of course at his side and we see that there are still some issues that need to be worked on when it comes to Cyn's safety and Raphael's protectiveness. I thought every scene with Raphael and Cyn was wonderful but I can't help feeling that Colin and Sophia should have been given more page time devoted to their relationship and characters.

Sophia is book 4 is D.B. Reynold's spectacularly written Vampires in America series. The way D.B. describes everything from the way her characters behave and their appearance to the smallest details of the setting, makes you feel as if vampires are "real". There is everything in this series that makes a vampire story good but D.B.'s fantastic writing elevates it and makes it great. While I did have a few minor issues, Sophia was still a satisfying read with suspense, romance and a gratifying hunt for revenge. Duncan's book is next and it can not be released soon enough for me.

This should be the continuing saga of Raphael and Cynthia. And to be honest, its the best parts of the story. The character Raphael is overwhelming, so well written and his interaction with Cynthia is engaging. These two characters overshadow everything. With Cyn at his side, Raphael and his people head to the scene of the crime, Coopers Rest, located in north Washington state.

At the same time, Sophia is called back to Vancouver by her Sire, Lucian. Only Lucian is nowhere to be found when she arrives. The only sign of him is the letter he left behind, specifically for Sophia's eyes. Lucian, Vampire Lord of the Canadian territories, is nothing like Raphael. He enjoys the more leizurely side of being immortal. The money, the beuties, both men and women. This 'easy go' lifestyle seems to have gotten him into trouble but it doesnt stop with him. Facing her sense of duty, Sophia too finds herself in the sleepy villiage outside of Seattle.

Colin, former SEAL, stands 6'4" with black hair and blue eyes, his Georgian accent tops it off, leaving things oh so peachy. He fits right in with these strong vamps, he's 100% alpha. That being said, he's nearly brought to his knees when he looks into eyes that he thought long since perished. Multiple storylines spawn from the main focus of this installment, and that is to find the killers.

Sophia is action packed, full of twists and turns, shocking revelations and steamy romance. Along with Sophia's story, Raphael and Cyn fans get a healthy dose of the couple. They are truly becoming one of my favorite couples in this genre. All things considered, the pairing is quite realistic. She is constantly reminding him that SHE is NOT one of his vamps. She has her own mind and basically does whatever the hell she wants. I love that she doesn't take his shit and he loves her all the more because of it. His vamps quiver in his presense, and rightfully so, while his mate flips him off and calls him an asshole when need be.

Vampires In America is shaping up to be a fantastic series and I am totally and completely hooked. And now...Duncan.(less)

It is ironic that Wahington is the same place where a rash of vampire murders have occured over the past few days. This book was suppose to be about Sophia and Colin. This book was about Cyn and Raphael, which is why I am giving it 4 stars. I love Cyn and Raphael so much. They are a dynamic couple and a lot of intense chemistry. But the book was to be about Sophia and Colin. At best, 20 percent of the book was about their relationship. It was a little disappointing but not to the point where I would give it a bad review because the story around Cyn and Raphael was in line with the story of Sophia and Colin. I would have liked to see more romance with Sophia and Colin. There relationship was so rushed that we did not get to know them like other characters.

This book was full of action and passion. Raphael continues to be one badass Vamp. He is so intense and takes no prisoners. I love it. He loves his Cyn and keeping her safe is all that matters. We get a great glimpse of his love for her and how truly powerful he really is. Of course, the author, Ms. Reynolds, leaves us with another tacky cliff hanger. I am use to it but it bugs the hell out of me. I recommend this series to anyone who loves intense, gorgeous, alpha vampires who kick ass and ask questions later with females who are just as intense and will hurt you if you mess with their man(oops,Vamp). Ahhhh what can i say about Sophia. I was so eager to read and know what happened to my beautiful favourite vampire raphael that i read it all in one sitting the day i could download it.

The story goes along the same lines as the other vampires in amercia ones do, something happens and Cyn and Raphael go a lookin to find and figure it out.

Vampire lord Raphael and his human mate Cyn thread throughout the series and tie each of the books together. My one main complaint about this book, in fact, was that large chunks of the story were devoted to Raphael, the murder of his people, and his relationship with Cyn. While much of this served to further the overall story of both the book and the series, it did feel to me as if Colin and Sophia got short-changed.

Despite that, what we do see of Sophia and Colin in enjoyable. They had been lovers years ago, but Colin was unaware that Sophia was a vampire. Their love affair ended when she died in a bombing. So he thought. It's not enough of a shock discovering that she's alive, oh no, to make it more interesting she is, and was, a vampire. He is understandably angry and confused but he manages to work with her on discovering the perpetrators responsible for killing two local vampires and attacking the mate of another.

Sophia is a more "human" vampire than Raphael, similar to Rajmund. Most of the time, she does not come across as scary and arrogant but can pass for human. That's not to say that she can't be the scary, arrogant bloodsucker when she needs to be, but she doesn't feel the need to act that way all of the time. I found this made her more likable and relatable; Reynolds' vampires are not warm and fuzzy, they are the top of the food chain and you always know it. However, they are not cookie cutter, each one is a clearly a separate character with a separate personality. Not all authors pull that off but Reynolds does it very well.

Colin is strong, loyal, funny, compassionate and determined to do the right thing. He is coasting, somewhat, in his job as local law enforcement but when he needs to, he doesn't hesitate to get out there and do his job. That doesn't always make him popular with the locals or his friends but, despite the pain it causes him, he does it anyway. He's someone you would want on your side and that you could count on.

Both Sophia and Colin feel very real, like people you might actually know. This added to the appeal of the book for me and I expect that I will be re-reading this one. If you haven't read the series, and you like dark scary vampires mixed with romance, sex and mysteries, you really need to check them out.

Every series is likely to have a weak entry and this one is it for Vampires in America. Raphael and Cyn are back in the spotlight, but they now they share it with a crop of new characters, including the title vampire character.

This time we move northwest to Vancouver, British Columbia and Washington state. Sophia herself has been summoned there by her Sire in the wake of three vampires’ untimely murders. Coincidentally, Colin Murphy, a retired Navy SEAL has relocated to the area to clear his mind and live a quiet life. But he winds up learning about the vampire murders, and as the ultimate protector of the innocent he becomes involved in the case in order to bring to justice those responsible. As they cross paths and work together, we realize that they have their own history, which presents a challenge. But they will have to work through that to locate the killer in time before he hurts anyone else.

These vampires were children of Raphael, and the Vampire Lord is none too happy to know of their demise. He doesn’t trust Sofia, and Cyn wants to help solve the case as well, which only exacerbates his concern for her safety and the unpredictability of the outcome. But if we know Cyn, we know she is committed to the job and will face whatever danger there may behead on. But this time around, she may have bitten of more than she can chew.

One of the reasons I enjoy this series is that there’s a lot of focus on the mystery component, and while there’s definitely a strong presence of romance, it’s not overbearing a lot of the time. Well, for this book that’s gone out the window. Sure, there’s a mystery but the romantic melodrama is laid on thick. This is because we’re not dealing with one couple now, but two. And that’s just too much for me. I just wasn’t invested in Sophia and Colin’s situation in the least and I’ll outright admit that I skimmed a lot of their scenes.

I was hoping for the books to get away from the missing women trend that it had going, and it did do that here. But it still wasn’t enough to create a compelling enough storyline. I guess D.B. Reynolds stuck with it before because it was a strength.

I would have recommended you skip this book altogether, but there are a few major plot developments that are worth reading. I can say that I was able to skim through certain scenes with little consequence to getting the big picture, so if you feel that urge, go with it. You’ll be fine.

And of course, a VNF review of this series isn’t complete without my comment on the cover…which is still pretty bad. I feel like they get worse and worse. The male model’s pose looks completely unnatural, awkward, and so NOT badass for a supposed Navy Seal. And once again you can barely read the text at the top of the book thanks to the trees. Whoever designed it obviously skipped the “contrast” chapter in their graphic design book. It’s ONLY one of the major principles, but what do I know!

So yeah, this book was a bit of a let down, but it wasn’t enough to deter me from continuing with the series, especially knowing that Duncan gets his turn next!

Even though this book is titled Sophia, it is as much about Cyn and Raphael as it is about her, and it was fantastic. I enjoyed the steamy relationship between the scrumptious Colin and the delightful Sophia, but the passion between Raphael and Cyn was sizzling. I LOVED it! I love this series and I love the characters, but I felt I was misled by the title for this book. It should have been name Raphael and Cyn. Although, I enjoyed seeing how their relationship develops, I think it should have been secondary to the story of Sophia and Collin. I'm on a D.B. Reynolds high right now!!! I read all 4 books in a matter of days. Sophia doesn't disappoint either. Cyn and Raphael are back, heading up to Seattle to deal with some murders. The story was mostly about Cyn and Raphael actually, but Sophia makes her way in there and has an interesting past and connection to the troubles in Seattle.
