I won this book as a prize from a contest from the author. I love Anya Bast, so I probably would have bought this book rather than getting it from the library if I hadn't won it. I won't reprise the storyline, as you can find that in plenty of other places. It is part of the Dark Magick series, and it is always bittersweet to me to read the last book of a series, so it was a little hard to finish, knowing this would be the last one of this series.

It has been awhile since I read the previous book...more

Hello everyone, sorry for my extended hiatus, things round here got a tad busy and well, life threw me over its shoulder and scampered off into the jungle! But I am still here, and alive and trying to get back to my blogging. So here goes, review number one and a review of a series which I have loved. This is the last book in the series and did it disappoint? No, absolutely not, it was great! One this did disappoint me, and that was simply that it was the last in the series, I even tweeted Anya...more

Midnight Enchantment by Anya Bast
Paranormal Romance –Feb. 7th, 2012
4 1/2 stars

Midnight Enchantment blew me away! This star-crossed romance is filled with passion, deception and heartbreak.

Elizabeth is a rare asrai fae who can dissolve into water. She is tasked by the Summer Queen with the dangerous mission of keeping the last pieces of the powerful bosca fadbh hidden from the rest of the fae for whom the pieces means freedom. Although she is against the Summer Queen’s politics and does not like...more

(view spoiler)[Finally the two opposing factions of the fae, the Summer Queen and the Shadow Queen have between them the three pieces of the bosh dahd and the book of bindings required to free them from their magical prison, a containment area that keeps them locked in and out of the human world. But the Summer Queen unlike her Shadow Queen counterpart doesn’t want freedom preferring the status quo and gives the two pieces in her possession into the keeping of Elizabeth Cely Saintjohn. Elizabeth...more

Mage Niall Quinn has received his marching orders from the Shadow Queen. His task will be to track down and retrieve the missing bosca fadbh pieces the Summer Queen has asked Elizabeth Cely Saintjohn to hide. All too soon Niall realises that finding an asrai, a rare water fae, is one thing, but catching someone who can become water is nigh impossible. It takes all his skills and cunning to catch Elizabeth, but she would rather die than surrender the pieces and thereby orchestrate her mother's de...more

I hate the female lead a little in the end for her very very late redemption. The thing I most love in the first book is when Gabriel accepted he couldn't sacrifice the entire race for one woman even if she is the (view spoiler)[queen (hide spoiler)] It didn't make me think his love is lesser in someway for this but respected and felt more the depth of his sacrifice. In the end the female love interest in this book just came out selfish to me. I get her reasons but the I've hoped she will do the...more

My Rating: 3.5 stars: Liked it a lot - recommend(B+)

I have adored Ms. Bast’s Dark Magick series since I picked up the first story in an anthology. The series chronicles an alternate Earth where humans and an “evil” cult-like group, the Phaendir, have incarcerated all Fae-kind (fairies, goblins, elven, etc.). The fae are working to escape their centuries-old prison by collecting pieces of a magical “key” call the bosca fadbh and a powerful spell book called the Book of Bindings. The mythology alo...more

Midnight Enchantment (Dark Magick #4) by Anya Bast
The fourth and final (?) book in this series. In this book we meet Elizabeth Cely Saintjohn an asrai, a rare type of water fae. She is young, conflicted but determined. The Summer Queen has given Elizabeth two parts of the key needed to open the book that can free the fae from the prison that is Piefferburg. Neither want the walls to come down although for very different reasons. Enter Niall Quinn. He has been sent by the Shadow Queen to retrieve...more

Elizabeth knows that keeping the hidden pieces that hold the walls around her world together is the only way to save her mothers life. Doesn’t mean she wants to work with the enemy but seeing no other choice she agrees to do so. Her species of fae is so elusive that no one knows her secrets anyway so she feels safe in being able to keep the pieces hidden from prying eyes.
Niall has been sent to collect the pieces no matter the cost. One small, although incredibly beautiful, fae can not stand in h...more

Anya Bast is a favorite of mine in just about any style she writes, but I really love this series. Fae series are often very political and full of so much intrigue thay the story can be very hard to follow, but this series doesn't have that problem. The characters are clear, intense and solid throughout and the plot line is strong and complex without being ridiculously over the top. There is definitely political stuff going on (isn't that necessary when you have the Seelie and Unseelie courts "b...more

Bast is a kick-butt writer, but in this one the characters lacked something. I wanted to love Niall the way I did his brother, but he seemed a little blah to me. Elizabeth had much more substance and she made me like the story. I usually love this author's work, but this latest was okay.
If you haven't read the other novels in this series you will definitely be lost because this one starts from where the last one left off. Elizabeth is charged by the itchy-bitchy Summer Queen to hide the two mis...more

My thoughts:

* Sad to see this series end... at least I think it's ending, haven't seen any info on any new releases in this series. At least the story arc is finished.

* Really enjoyed this book and didn't understand why people were giving it only three stars and saying they didn't care for Elizabeth... until the last sixty pages for so (in ebook version), then I completely understood as I wanted to beat the stupid b*tch down for being so obtuse.

* I had a thought while reading this one that I rea...more

3.5 stars. This is the final book (4) in the excellent Dark Magic series by Anya Bast. The world of Fae, Seelie and Unseelie Courts, the evil Phaendir and the gormless humans has been a totally enjoyable ride for me, full of humour excitement and great characters and romance. The previous three books I gave 4 or 5 stars, but I was a little disappointed in this entry.

The book picks up with Niall on the hunt for the aphrai (like a water sprite) Elizabeth. She is hiding the last two pieces of the k...more

My thoughts on this particular book are a bit disappointed...I am a fan of Ms. Bast's work and this looked to be a great read...The cover art is absolutely stunning and after reading the summary of what the story was about, I was excited to read it ...So I settled in and was ready to go on a fantastic journey and then it just all kind of fell flat for me...Interesting premise, loved the world building, however, couldn't get into either of the leads, both the male and female. I love Anya Bast! With that off my chest, I adore her Dark Magic series. Every book in the series to this point has been great and this one, Midnight Enchantment, fits right in with the rest. I love that she has us cheering for the Dark Fae even though they may have the more ruthless and less human characteristics. This reminds me of the Merry Gentry series with more plot and less sex, sex, sex. Don’t get me wrong, Ms. Bast writes some spectacular and steamy sex scenes and I really enjoy the MG...more

My favourite of the whole series. The storyline definitely heats up, being the final book of the series. It was a lot more engaging and something was always happening, unlike the previous books which had a lot of intermissions to fill in the romance aspect.

And I definitely liked Elizabeth's character, and not simply because she had red hair and could turn into water (the little mermaid was one of favourite movies as a child) but she was the most interesting of the four, with a cheeky and myster...more

the last in this particular series by anya bast, and it was great!the heroine in this book does something that she ordinarily wouldn't do, for love of her mother, and the hero must try to make her see that what she is doing is wrong for the greater good, and if necessary, will torture her to get what she has hidden. in spite of all that, they fall in love! it is fiction, after all!

This book seems like it brings the series to an end and it feels anti-climatic. It seemed to take me forever to read, I kept putting it down and even read 2 others after I started this one.

I really liked Elizabeth. She is the scourge of the fae, or so it seems. When you learn her reasons why she is hiding what everyone else needs you understand and wonder what you would do. Once that Niall enters the picture and starts to torture Elizabeth you realize just how strong her convictions were. I had...more

Ugh, what a disappointing way to end. Elizabeth was an idiot! I hated her immaturity and selfishness and couldn't really understand what Niall (who by the way is older than her mother) saw in her. I found this last book a really frustrating end to a series that I otherwise enjoyed.

As with this whole series I loved it if I didnt have the next nailini Singh book to read I would be tempted to go back to the first in this series. Just makes me wonder if this was the end of this series...mmmm interesting.

It took me forever to finish this book and it wasn't the poor books fault it was a case of "its not you, its me". i didnt do this book justice, it was my fault picking it up, putting it down constantly reading it at the gym but not at home because I knew I would get sucked in but I didnt want to be up late. I was edgy and not committed, the book itself was good and an exciting conclusion to this series. I am sorry A. Bast for not giving your work the attention it deserved. When I did finally ded...more

Anya Bast is the author of numerous works of romantic fiction, mostly all paranormal and mostly all scorching hot. She lives in the country with her husband, daughter, eight cats, a dog, and an odd assortment of rescued animals.

She grew up in Minnesota and still favors the colder climates. After high school she moved to the southeast United States where she attended college. While in graduate scho...more
