I continued my exploration of my father's suggested literature with another Talmage classic. I was once again enthralled with Talmage's vocabulary, and found myself doing a little vocabulary expanding work with a dictionary to figure out just exactly what the author was saying. I became even more interested in the history of the Catholic Church, and the writings of Josephus, the recorder of Jewish History during the Dark Ages. Nero and the chapters concerning the inquisition of impossing Christ...more

A bit more basic than his other books, and a bit more caustic in his attack on false doctrines and non-LDS religions, but very informative on certain aspects of the great apostasy. If you want to know more about the chronology, changes in doctrine, practices, ordinances, priesthood, and the like, it is a great read for you. I thoroughly enjoyed it, although some parts were a little basic for what I have come to expect out of Talmage.

A great book discussing how the Church Christ established fell into apostasy. Many historical facts are presented as evidence of the loss of the authority of heaven on earth. Structure is very similar to Jesus the Christ. After reading this you wonder how the Catholic church has any ground to stand on with regards to them claiming the divinity of their religion, let alone the churches that came about during the reformation.

How the Apostasy came about after Christ had established his church on the earth. How the Apostasy was predicted Persecutions external as well as internal. How Constantine joins Christianity for Political reasons. How the Nicean Creed came about, scripture reading forbidden, revolts against the churches, the reformers as well as establishment of Christ's original church. Excellent read and well documented

A wonderful little treatise which gives the history of the Christian church after the death of Christ up until its restoration in 1830. This is a good jumping off place for newer material that deals with the early Christian church and the rise of Catholicism. An LDS classic.

Oh man, Elder Talmage really brings it home in this short history of the events that occur from the death of the apostles to around the time of the Reformation, solidifying the fact that there did indeed occur an Apostasy and loss of the authority of God among men.

This book is an excellent missionary tool that contributed greatly to my understanding of the necessity of a restoration. It's written as a professional document with thorough references and citations.

A great read. I read this while serving an LDs mission in Italy-Sicily. Helped me understand much about Catlocism and other religions in general. A great help to follow ecclesiastical history.

I found that reading Talmadge (esspecially his footnotes) takes a serious concentrated effort on my part. The Great apostasy is amazing, and his footnotes were unbeleivable.

It gave me a better understanding of the apostasy. It contains history that I didn't know which helped me understand how the apostasy came to pass.

Very enlightening about the decay of Christianity from the time of the apostles. I found the details, dates and reference to be very solid.

I read this in college and I did so a little bit sporadically. I did enjoy this book a lot but I could probably use with rereading it.

good for what it is, but outdated and not deserving of it's almost canonical approval by latter-day saints.

The most detailed explanation I've found of why the true gospel needed to be restored by Joseph Smith.

A great historical overview of how we drifted from the truth, and what was lost along the way.
