I got this book on CD as a gift and took it with me in the car when I had to go to visit an inmate at the Prison. President Hinckley's life is fascinating; he really was in the right place at the right time and has had a hand in every facet of how the church has come out of obscurity. The only thing that is distracting about the presentation is that Sherri Dew's writing style is really heavy and plodding.

President Hinckley lived an exceptional life with many faith promoting experiences. It did seem too lengthy in spots and sometimes after reading it I would tell my husband "I feel tired and lonely" (insider's joke ~read it!)

I started this book about a year ago, but it became overdue at the library and someone had it on hold. I kept it for two weeks paying the 5 cents/day late fee (since you can't renew when someone has it on hold), but I was too busy watching the first three seasons of LOST back to back. Finally I decided to give it to a more faithful person, the one who had it on hold at the library.

Then President Hinckley died, and I was like, "Oh! I totally missed my chance to read his biography. Now he...more

Nonfiction doesn't engross me as much as fiction, so it took me a few months to finish this one. However, I love the man so I really enjoyed the book. I started reading this during a major family crisis. I read several chapters while in the hospital with my son who had a brain tumor removed. There were many gems in the book that bolstered my faith at a time when I really needed a boost. I especially enjoyed reading about his work during years that I can recall in my own life. For instance,...more

My husband's Stake President gave him this book when he earned his Eagle Scout Award. And since the aging leader of our Church probably won't be with us much longer (update: he just passed away at the beginning of this year) I thought it would be a good time to learn about his life.
President Hinckley served a mission to Great Britain thanks to his mother's foresight and planning during the Great Depression. He really gained his testimony of the work while on that mission and the same week h...more

I really enjoyed the book. I think another approach that could have been quite good was to focus on attributes or character issues, in addition to the chronoligical approach. I also hope that Sister Dew writes a 2nd edition that includes the last 11 years of his life.

I think a quote from Elder Maxwell best captures President Hinckley's approach to his ministry. "He is an incrementalist." He took existing programs and changed them to make them much better.

Some of the thing...more

5 stars = definite re-read. This has to be one of my most favorite books to read if not my favorite. I am usually bored with biographies, but Pres Hinckley's life was so incredibly full of excitement that it kept me wanting more. I can't even believe his awesome commitment to the church, and everything he gave up to serve the church. I truly was touched and exited to be a better person, someone more like Pres. Hinckley. When we think of his great accomplishments we usually think of the things he...more

Compelling account of the most traveled prophet of God. You'll be amazed at the life that was led by the late President Gordon B. Hinckley. After reading it, and after your head stops spinning trying to imagine all the things President Hinckley did throughout his life, scroll through his travels that are laid out at the end of the book. No other prophet in the history of the world has come close to President Hinckley in getting out and visiting the members of Christ's church and builing the k...more

This book is phenomenal but let me start with my criticism: Sheri, I just wish you would have waited another decade to write it.
Sheri Dew wrote this biography of Gordon B. Hinckley (Current President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) in 1996. Since that time much has transpired in the life of Gorndon B. Hinckley, who is now 97 years old. I'm sure there are one hundred important things that have transpired in the last decade that followers and admirers like myself would lov...more

My negative review has absolutely nothing to do with Gordon B. Hinckley but rather with the shriek that wrote this babble. Sheri Dew cannot write worth a crap. I bet President Hinckley had an amazing life, too bad Sheri Dew focused more on hero-worship than pure fact and description. The problem I have with all of the book is the President Hinckley was a human being. He had faults, problems, dysfunction, etc. According to Sheri Dew's biography, he was more like a superman and even when he d...more

Wow! What a life Pres. Hinckley led! What an incredible example he was. He was so energetic, so optimistic, so hard working. He never stopped going. I am totally amazed at how much he accomplished in his life. Me personally, I need rest, otherwise I get burned out. But Pres. Hinckley never stopped. Where did he get the energy from? He was like the Energizer Bunny. The Lord must have strengthening him. I find Pres. Hinckly's life utterly fascinating and a great example to me. I hope Sheri Dew wil...more

The life of President Hinckley should be known to everyone. What an unfailing follower of the Spirit of the Lord. He has done so much in his life to better the nation and the world. His mark of work and faith have affected my life profoundly as I think of him and the great effort that he put forth to bring salvation to many people across the world. Read this book. You will have faith to work harder and put in an extra effort in your daily goals. His motto of service,"forget yours...more

I did a book review on this for my freshman high school class in rural Georgia. I prepared and prepared, but my notes were still jumbled, rambling and I was getting frustrated: my Mom came into the dining room, helped me make sense of what was important information, what the class would understand and fit it into the time constraints. I spoke about this Mormon prophet to an audience of Baptist apathetic teenagers and came away feeling I had done a fine job. This is one of my favorite memories...more

This follows the extraordinary life of an extraordinary man. There is so much more to this man than I ever knew! I found myself constantly choked up while reading. I was in total amazement of the things he was involved in within the LDS Church throughout his whole life. I also learned a lot about LDS Church history through this biography because Gordon B. Hinckley was involved in church matters since he was in his 20s. Truly a fascinating look into his life and the progression of the LDS church....more

I watched an interview with Sister Dew about the prophet yesterday morning before his funeral was broadcasted and it made me so anxious to read her book. So far it is really good and I am enjoying learning things about the prophet that I didn't know.

Now that I have finished the book, I only wish Sister Dew had waited to write it so it included the last few years of President Hinckley's life. What an amazing man and good example. Even from the time of his youth.

I'm so glad I read this book. It's very long as it goes into depth of Pres. Hinckley's life, but it was VERY worth it. I can't believe how much this man did in his lifetime. What would our church be like without him? He was amazing (I knew that before), but reading it in detail and hearing the viewpoint of his wife, family and friends, was very enlightening. He worked so much and so hard that I found myself worn out when I would put the book down.

Pres. Hinckley was a man who KNEW. His love of all people, all backgrounds, all religions etc was something most probably uncomprehendable, reading about his life, his work and his family gave me so much to aspire to, so much hope in what is a cruel world that no longer do I shy away from the possibility of pain, hurt or offense. This man makes me feel like I can do and become anything I want to. A very humourous, humble and inspiring read.

I am absolutely loving this biography. After the passing of President Hinckley, I felt compelled to know more about him and his life. Reading this biography by Sheri L. Dew, I find myself completely engrossed. Every evening I really look forward to learning more about this amazing man and Prophet. I am learning so much. I especially enjoy the parts about his family life, as it gives such an incredible example for my own young family.

I actually was not all that impressed by the author of this book. I love Pres. Hinckley and there's so many great stories of his life and times. But it just wasn't all that well written. I don't think it flowed as well as many other biographies, especially those of church leaders, that I've read. Didn't live up to my expectations, although the more you can read up on Pres. Hinckley's life the better person you'll become and/or desire to be.
