For the first time, I think it really hit me how much research this duo does. Seriously, how much do they prep before they write a novel or just a novella? It's amazing! For all I know, it could be unauthentic research, but with this novella, I know it's all true - after all, I recognize Greek Mythology even if I don't recognize the other types of mythology used in the other novels.

For all I know, it could be unauthentic research, but with this novella, I know it's all true - after all, I recognize Greek Mythology even if I don't recognize the other types of mythology used in the other novels.

It is a testament to the writing skill of Ilona Andrews that they were able to pack such a huge amount of depth and punch into a short novella. Andrea is never a main character in the Kate Daneisl Series, but she's the primary secondary one and while we know her and are able to distinguish her voice from that of Kate's, I loved seeing both how similar their vulnerabilities were and how different their lives were, shaping them to be completely different people.

It's impossible to mix up the voices of Kate and Andrea as they are both such strong and distinct personalities, especially Andrea whose past is far more tortured than any of us could have imagined. My heart ached for her and now I just want to rip into Gunmetal Magic and get to know her even better. When this novel opens, Raphael, the bouda who has been lusting after Andrea, has been pursuing her for six months and to see these two finally discuss their pasts and take the plunge to make a future together is heart-warming. Both of them have their flaws, but despite that, they are perfect complements to one another, much like Kate and Curran. It's interesting to see the differences in these two relationships, even from the onset, as, in shapeshifter terms, both Kate and Curran are alphas, which makes their relationship all the more volatile to bring together, but all the more long-lasting once together, compared to that of Raphael and Andrea, neither of whom are outright alphas. (Gosh, look at me, talking shapeshifter speak! I should just find a wardrobe into this world already...)

Magic Mourns was an utter success as a novella and the subtle comparisons that the authors draw between Andrea and Kate, both simultaneously linking and separating them, were remarkable. Plus, we have yet another fantastic mythological mystery on our hands, witty lines, tons of snark, and even some mentions of Curran to keep us satisfied. But, know that if that doesn't work, Raphael is more than charming, sweet, and sexy to pass the time with! ;)

I am not a giant fan of anthologies, usually, I like to read the books by the authors I love and dismiss the others. Especially since this anthology was over £7 and I knew for a fact that I was only going to read Magic Mourns. I succumbed because the wait for Magic Slays was becoming way too intense, and I needed my Ilona Andrews fix.

Magic Mourns is set in Atlanta, in the same Kate Daniels world where chaos is wreaked by the constant pendulum swing of magic and tech. Kate Daniels is on medical leave after the catastrophic but triumphant events of the Midnight Games in the previous book: Magic Strikes. Her best friend and Knight of the Order of Merciful Aid, Andrea Nash, has agreed to take over Kate’s work until she gets better, thus starting the novella. In Atlanta the Pack is the second largest in the Unites States, their only competitors being the People. The People are a corporation of humans that deal with the taming and understanding of necromancy, and in turn the control of vampires. The premise of the novella is already established and set up by the previous novels. Andrea was introduced in Magic Burns as a beastkin hyena, the offspring of a werehyena and hyenawere, who despises her inner beast doing her utmost to hide it from herself and those around her; it is in Magic Mourns that we find out why.

Set against the backdrop of hellhounds (the premise of the anthology), Ilona Andrews doesn’t disappoint. Whilst aimlessly sitting in Kate’s office Andrea receives a call for a ‘green five’, in layman’s speak that means ‘mayday a shapeshifter in distress’. It’s only until she reaches the sight that she realises that the aforementioned shapeshifter is Raphael Medrano, and the distress is actually a Cerberus giving chase. It isn’t surprising that Hades’ hellhound has hit Atlanta; Atlanta attracts weird stuff like the sun in June. Ah Raphael, what an amazing character. Like Andrea he was introduced to us in Magic Burns, but unlike her he is the scion of Aunt B (alpha to the Bouda’s) and in loose terms alpha male of the werehyena’s. He was shown to us as caring, patient and incredibly unconventionally attractive. It was also made apparent that he carried a torch for Andrea, and that torch hadn’t shown any signs of burning out, until maybe this novella came out. Andrea and Raphael’s banter and scenes always made me laugh like a hyena myself in the previous books, so it was genuinely a treat to read this novella and learn more about both of them.

In the Kate Daniels world, when you spot a Cerberus looking all mean and scary and wanting to bite your head off with each of its own, what do you do? Well unlike Kate, Andrea deals with guns. So as a strong, independent and very tech savvy Knight, she grabs her biggest and fastest weapons from her arsenal and does what any badass asskicker would do. Teaming up with the guy who has been obsessing over her for six months and what do you get? A great story. Kate makes a few appearances with her encyclopaedic knowledge of all things strange and mythical but mostly the story follows Raphael and Andrea, tying up a few loose ends in regards to their relationship with the right amount of humour.

The novella ends with a change of protagonist, the final scene provides a teeny hint in regards to the Lord of the Free Beasts, Curran. Something that really makes you sieve through all the previous books and question everything you really know about him.

I love how Ilona Andrews gives us an insight into the lives and workings of some of the smaller characters, because they are just as fascinating as Curran and Kate. I am especially eager to read Hexed, following the story of Jim, Curran’s right hand man, and Dali.

For those that haven’t read the Kate Daniels series starting with Magic Mourns might prove slightly confusing, thankfully the Andrews explain the basics of their futuristic dystopian world that Andrea and Kate reside in. However, I would say that if you haven’t read the novels then I say what planet have you been on?

So I am a little embarrassed but I was so sure I hadn't read this novella before. I didn't remember it but I knew there was something about it that was pulling at my brain box. Then about half way through I realized I knew this story was in Must Love Hellhounds, so I looked up my goodreads read list, and sure enough I had read that book and reviewed this story. When I picked up Magic Mourns, I was expecting Kate. What I got was Andrea. The shift in narrators was a surprise for me, but not an unwelcome one. When I picked up Magic Mourns, I was expecting Kate. What I got was Andrea. The shift in narrators was a surprise for me, but not an unwelcome one. I love me some Kate, but I’ve really enjoyed Andrea’s character in the past two books, and knowing that Gunmetal Magic is coming out this summer with her PoV, I was pumped for the preview. And friends, Magic Mourns did not disappoint!

Often, when you pick up new narration by the same author, it’s incredibly similar. However, Ilona Andrews really took me by surprise with Andrea. She doesn’t write the same for this character at all. Sure, it’s still written very well, but Andrea’s thought process is different to Kate’s. We see that not only in her mental dialog, but because it is written in first person, we see it in every word. Andrea’s narration isn’t full of well-known phrases and clichés, it’s not as clipped, moody, or sharp; it is another strong butt-kicking chick with a wry sense of humor, and I am now more than ever a fan of Andrea’s.

I’m going to say after the past three books, Ilona Andrews kind of owed us this one. Magic Mourns tells the story of Andrea dealing with duty without Kate. When she receives word of the (supposedly) giant dog chasing a shapeshifter outside of the city, she heads out to check the scene. There she finds, much to her dismay, Rafael. Rafael running from what is, indeed, a three headed dog the size of a house. Andrea doesn’t particularly want to work with Rafael, but she doesn’t want to leave the guy either. She wants to create a better bond between herself and the Pack, hoping that she can earn a position of trust similar to Kate’s, making relations easier for everyone.

As always, we get a fun and unique play on mythology (Greek this time), but with it comes the gratification of Andrea and Rafael, and how their relationship differs from Kate and Curran’s. Andrea and Rafael, unlike the other couple mentioned, actually acknowledge and talk about the issues between them. For better or worse, at least they have some form of communication going. Magic Mourns also gives us better insight into Andrea’s past. We’ve known she is beastkin, but other than the stigma involved, we’ve been a little blind to what that really meant for her growing up. I was incredibly interested to have her past laid bare, appalling as aspects of it may be. Where Ilona Andrews has been giving us snippets of Kate’s past and relationship with Curran slowly over 3 novels, it was really quite satisfying to learn so much about another character in such a short period of time. Not that I’m complaining about Kate’s pacing, quite the opposite, I love it, but that doesn’t mean I don’t need to be thrown a bone every once in a while. Andrea’s story was well paced, informative, and the perfect balance between action and romance.

Overall, Magic Mourns is a must read for Kate Daniels fans, particularly those preparing to enjoy Gunmetal Magic!(less)

It's here that we find out what "apples of immortality" are. Not a big deal for Kate as she's immune to a lot. However, I think this confirms there's something to learn about Curran and will be revealed at some point in book 6 or 7.

This was a great novella filling in the gaps of how Andrea & Raphael got together, insight on Andrea tortured past, and why she hates her beast form and boudas especially.

It is a GREAT story, and well worth reading again. yes, I was sort of disappointed that I had read it already, but hey, if I had been paying attention, I would have seen that I already had it in "Hellhounds". I liked it, but after seeing the combustible combo that is Raphael and Andrea before and after this story, I found it not quite combustible enough. I had always imagined them coming together as something highly explosive and emotional, and while there were quite a bit emotional revealings, mostly about Andrea's past, I wasn't knocked of my feet.

This story is really an introduction to the Kate Daniels World series. As in, this story is about Andrea, Kate's Best Friend and co-worker, rather than Kate herself. I just adore Ilona Andrews. They're a phenomenal team with great writing and great ideas. I didn't love this particular installment because it felt like a novel-length story in a novella-length package. The story was just too big, and as a result it seemed rushed.

Magic Mourns is probably my favorite of the Kate Daniels novellas. Andrea Nash is not a character to whom I paid much attention prior to this read. In addition to watching her try to come to grips with some stuff in her life, we also see her chasing down Cerberus. With the assistance of Raphael the sexy werehyena and Thanatos, Angel of Death, who happens to be a guy living in a trailer park named Teddy. How could that not be awesome?

Novella protagonizada pela Andrea, a melhor amiga de Kate. Foi muito bom ver a Andrea e o Raphael entenderem-se finalmente e conhecer personagens que podem vir a ser fulcrais no futuro, como Thanatos.

Apenas não gostei do tamanho do livro. Entendo que novellas são mesmo curtas, mas 90 páginas (e a versão que li só tinha 73 porque não separaram os capítulos) soube-me a tão pouco... o que vale é que o #4 é uma das minhas próximas leituras. Mal posso esperar!

I just love Ilona Andrews. I read this one because I needed a short, exciting read, and I definitely got it. I wish I had read this one in the intended order, but after a few pages I remembered what was going at that time. Magic Mourns centers on Andrea, and it was especially interesting to me since Gunmetal Magic, coming out this summer, will be told from Andrea's viewpoint. So this is a short story that takes place after Magic Strikes, written from Andrea's POV. Surprisingly, I really liked it! I don't have a good track record for liking short stories that much in general, especially when it comes to alternate POV short stories. But this was really well done, and I had no problem staying interested in the story and plowing my way right through it.

The story answers two questions that I had about brief references that were made in the 5th book: the apples of immortality and the coming together of Andrea and Rafael. We could have figured this out without the novella.
