For the first time, I think it really hit me how much research this duo does. Seriously, how much do they prep before they write a novel or just a novella? It's amazing! For all I know, it could be unauthentic research, but with this novella, I know it's all true - after all, I recognize Greek Mythology even if I don't recognize the other types of mythology used in the other novels.

It is a testament to the writing skill of Ilona Andrews that they were able to pack such a huge amount of depth an...more

I finally read Magic Mourns, YAY! I was up till 3am finishing it because it was just that good, and now I feel incredibly guilty that I didn't just buy it when it first came out in October ‘09. If I was thinking-which I wasn’t-I could have just bought it and read it while I was in the States. Frankly, I was reluctant to buy the Must Love Hellhounds anthology which featured work by Charlaine Harris, Nalini Singh, Ilona Andrews and Meljean Brook. I am not a giant fan of anthologies, usually, I lik...more

OVERVIEW/ANALYSIS: In "Magic Mourns", which is a 90-page novella in the anthology Hell Hounds, we get a POV from Andrea, Kate's friend as Kate is in the background due to the climax of Magic Strikes and Andrea gets to deal with the Order's problems as Kate's replacement. Andrea has not been able to get much outdoors action due to certain issues which were focused upon in Magic Burns [2nd Kate Daniels book]. She gets a call from out of town to investigate...more

Part of the Anthology, Must Love Hellhounds, Magic Mourns is Andrea's story. When a call comes to Order of Knights of Merciful Aid regarding a huge dog chasing a shapeshifter, Andrea decides to take the case. The shapeshifter turns out to be Raphael, the son of Aunt B, Alpha of the bouda clan -- and the huge dog? Cerberus. But Raphael has a task -- his mother's mate died and his corpse was stolen. And the house where the corpse was stored was guarded by the giant hellhound ...

Read this in the Must Love Hellhounds anthology.

4.5 stars. 90 pages. What a pleasant surprise, I've been impatiently waiting for Gunmetal Magic because I love Andrea and Raphael and want to read almost as much about them as I do about Kate and Curran, but I didn't realize this short Kate Daniels installment was focused on Andrea and Raphael. So this has taken the edge off a bit. I already love Andrea but I love her more after this one. My heart went out to her when she was telling Raphael how sh...more

i actually read this short in Must Love Hellhounds but i just copy'd my review and pasted it here:

Andrea Nash (Kates Best friend) is playing Kate while she's resting up from an injury. so when teddy jo calls about a shapeshifter problem is Andrea's turn to try and fix it without revealing her secret form: Beastkin while trying to evade Raphael.

alright so i took a couple brakes while reading this short story so my sum-up might be a bit retarded but who cares? you got the main idea. anyways this w...more

So I am a little embarrassed but I was so sure I hadn't read this novella before. I didn't remember it but I knew there was something about it that was pulling at my brain box. Then about half way through I realized I knew this story was in Must Love Hellhounds, so I looked up my goodreads read list, and sure enough I had read that book and reviewed this story. So yeah, totally embarrassed that I have read but didn't remember a story by my favorite authors. Geeze.

Now in my defense I don't think...more

Magic Mourns is a novella featuring Kate Daniel’s best friend, Andrea. It takes place between Magic Strikes (#3) and Magic Bleeds (#4). This is the story of how Andrea and Raphael first get together. When we start the story Andrea is still avoiding Raphael. He has decided that he wants her and has called her work twice a day for months. He has “courted” her in typical bouda fashion. This varies slightly from the shapeshifter customs of courting which is basically breaking and entering and leavin...more

When I picked up Magic Mourns, I was expecting Kate. What I got was Andrea. The shift in narrators was a surprise for me, but not an unwelcome one. I love me some Kate, but I’ve really enjoyed Andrea’s character in the past two books, and knowing that Gunmetal Magic is coming out this summer with her PoV, I was pumped for the preview. And friends, Magic Mourns did not disappoint!

Often, when you pick up new narration by the same author, it’s incredibly similar. However,...more

It's here that we find out what "apples of immortality" are. Not a big deal for Kate as she's immune to a lot. However, I think this confirms there's something to learn about Curran and will be revealed at some point in book 6 or 7.

This was a great novella filling in the gaps of how Andrea & Raphael got together, insight on Andrea tortured past, and why she hates her beast form and boudas especially.

The very end of this story switched to the POV of a new character and that was interesting. N...more

OK, first, this story is indeed in "Must Love Hellhounds", so get over it. It is a GREAT story, and well worth reading again. yes, I was sort of disappointed that I had read it already, but hey, if I had been paying attention, I would have seen that I already had it in "Hellhounds". It is worth it. The story has been described by others, so I will only say that this is yet another dip into the Andrews world of Magical Atlanta, but from another perspective. You can read my review of Gunmetal Magi...more

This is a short story published within the collection, "Must love Hell Hounds" . It is a must read for any Curran/Kate fans. Like all Ilona Andrews stories, this one is well edited with no stupid sentence structure. The reader is allowed to focus on the story.

This story builds the foundation between Andrea and Raphael. Spoilers: The relationship is consummated. Magic apples as well as the Greek Angel of Death are explained. Aunt B develops into a well rounded character. The hierarchy within th...more

No better way to make this short story more special than to receive it from the authors themselves!! I'll certainly cherish the copy!

But that aside, I will review as objectively as possible. Magic Mourns is a short story included in the Must Love Hellhounds anthology that shifts the focus from Kate Daniels to her best friend, Andrea Nash. She's been handling Kate's affairs at her office until she gets a call to investigate a weird three-headed dog that seems to be running free. It turns out it'...more

I'm reading this novella in the Must Love Hellhounds anthology. This novella stars Andrea Nash and Raphael. It takes place shortly after the book Magic Strikes while Kate is resting from (view spoiler)[ramming her stomach into a sword at full speed. (hide spoiler)]

Review to come.

Andrea is pretty badass but I miss being in Kate's head.

I liked it, but after seeing the combustible combo that is Raphael and Andrea before and after this story, I found it not quite combustible enough. I had always imagined them coming together as something highly explosive and emotional, and while there were quite a bit emotional revealings, mostly about Andrea's past, I wasn't knocked of my feet.

It's fun to read this after reading the books, because there's all these little small references that suddenly make sense. I liked the little teaser we g...more

I am loving this series of books by Ilona Andrews! This short story features two of the supporting characters in the books - Andrea and Raphael. It was really nice to see a different perspective in the Kate Daniels world. Of course, I enjoy books that feature Kate and Curran more but the alternate perspective in a short story works for me. (view spoiler)[ Now that two of the supporting characters have decided to finally be a couple, will Kate and Curran finally do the same in the next book? Wait...more

This story is really an introduction to the Kate Daniels World series. As in, this story is about Andrea, Kate's Best Friend and co-worker, rather than Kate herself. Andrea gets her own novel next so this is just a little intro to her as an individual. That said Andrea is sent to investigate a three headed dog that is running amok. In the course of her investigation she runs into Rapheal, the werehyena that loves her and she wants as well. I thought it was a good story, especially for the length...more

As I stated in my Magic Strikes review I was more than excited about Andrea(s past) and the maybe-romantic relationship between her and Raphael. I already owned the Anthology that contains this short story, but never read Magic Mourns. I didn't to get spoiled. ;)

This was really nice! Magic Mourns was well written, fast paced and gives insights I was waiting for since Andrewa was properly introduced to the reader.

Raphael is a decend guy and I loved to read about how they treated eachother fr...more

Fun! I'd have liked to read it in order, but since I read it late there weren't any spoiler risks for me (although I think if you did read it in order, there wouldn't be any spoilers), and it was good to see how Andrea & Raphael got together before their problems... I actually think this story does a better job of differentiating Andrea's voice from Kate's than the early parts of Gunmetal Magic did - although perhaps I was better tuned to the differences because I just finished GM. Anyway, i...more

Short. About Andrea and Raphael. Tried to present to us their romance, but it was just shaky and too fast and didn't work out to me. He spent six months chasing her just so she can plummet into his arms in 2 seconds flat. But I did like the end. As always, the detailing and the mythology is really well done, but there are still descriptive parts of it that were totally yawn worthy and didn't fit in at all with this short story, given that everything else is fast paced. But the book Kate was read...more

I just adore Ilona Andrews. They're a phenomenal team with great writing and great ideas. I didn't love this particular installment because it felt like a novel-length story in a novella-length package. The story was just too big, and as a result it seemed rushed.

A body is missing, so Andrea and Raphael hunt it down, battling a humongous three-headed dog along the way. (No spoilers here. You learn this much in the opening scenes.) A navigator of vampires joins the fun, bringing with her a few va...more

Magic Mourns is probably my favorite of the Kate Daniels novellas. Andrea Nash is not a character to whom I paid much attention prior to this read. In addition to watching her try to come to grips with some stuff in her life, we also see her chasing down Cerberus. With the assistance of Raphael the sexy werehyena and Thanatos, Angel of Death, who happens to be a guy living in a trailer park named Teddy. How could that not be awesome?

Mal posso esperar!

This was great! I sort of knew I was missing something when I started the fourth book and I figured it was this novella. I really love how mature Ilona Andrews's relationships are. People act like adults! (view spoiler)[I loved how Andrea and Raphael said, "That's one of my hangups," letting the other one know where they were coming from. SO COOL. (hide spoiler)]

I just love Ilona Andrews. I read this one because I needed a short, exciting read, and I definitely got it. I wish I had read this one in the intended order, but after a few pages I remembered what was going at that time. Magic Mourns centers on Andrea, and it was especially interesting to me since Gunmetal Magic, coming out this summer, will be told from Andrea's viewpoint. Magic Mourns has everything you would expect from Ilona Andrews: action, humor, romance, and an eye-opening ending. Make...more

So this is a short story that takes place after Magic Strikes, written from Andrea's POV. Surprisingly, I really liked it! I don't have a good track record for liking short stories that much in general, especially when it comes to alternate POV short stories. But this was really well done, and I had no problem staying interested in the story and plowing my way right through it.

4/2/13 **Not my favorite in this series by any means. Many of the paragraphs read like first draft writing - too simple. The story answers two questions that I had about brief references that were made in the 5th book: the apples of immortality and the coming together of Andrea and Rafael. We could have figured this out without the novella.

“Who is there with you?"

"Raphael"

Kate's voice snapped. "I'll be in Atlanta in three hours. Where are you?"

"I said it's nothing major."

"Bullshit. You wouldn't work with Raphael unless the Apocalypse was imminent and that was the only way to prevent it.”
