Has a copy to sell/swap — Read in November, 2008
Since it's been 24 years since I last read a fantasy from this popular author, I thought I'd give him another go. This is the first book of a trilogy which finds a motley crew of adventures on a mission to find out what happened to an earlier mission and to recover some artifacts and hopefully get their greedy little hands on some new magic. There are elves, a druid, a seer, "Rovers" (like a gypsy), and all sorts of magic aboard the airship Jerle Shannara. It's an easy read b...more

As usual, Terry Brooks entertains his fans with another spectacular tale. He keeps you wanting to turn the pages to find out more. This is a great first book in the beginning of the series.

Thirty years ago, the elves sent an expedition to retrieve a powerful legendary magic that would aid the four lands in the fight with the Federation and the Free-born. An Elven prince led the expedition with the aid of the Elfstones. The Elfish people thought all was lost when one member from the expediti...more

I first read the Voyage of the Jerle Shannara before I read any other, this was my first introduction to Terry Brooks world. It was very good, I was pulled right into it and read through it with building interest. I would consider this series the combined best of what Terry Brooks has to offer. If you don't want to read all the 15+ books than start here and you will still get a good sense for Terry Brooks and what he has accomplished.

Terry Brooks has been a favorite author of mine since I picked up "Sword of Shannara" back when I was 14..I love the way he writes, and it is always amazing to me to see how all the characters come together....I also liked the references back to some of his earlier works, I had forgotten all about some of them, and it made me want to go back and read them all over again...wonderful book, and as always a great read.

It sucks. Terry Brooks golfed through this thing like George Bush did through his presidency. The book begins well enough, but the ending is contrived and uncreative IMO. I was very disapointed. Even the writing is only sub-par, which is odd considering the extensive number of previous works under his sleeve. Ghostwritten? Then again, I read the Shanarra series when I was a teenager...

I've read many of Terry Brooks series of fantasy books. The Ilse Witch does a lot of ground work for this trilogy, setting up the characters and plot. I needed a book to just escape into, a book to be captivated by, and become lost in it's world rather than sitting around stewing about my own miserable condition. The Ilse Witch has helped me do that.

Another good series from Terry Brooks. These are quite different in plot from the other Shannara books up to this point. I was really surprised. At this point, it seems that Terry Brooks is starting to target his books more at adults instead of young adults.

This review applies to the entire trilogy since the individual books don't stand on their own.

A fairly standard fantasy quest story. This one didn't have the trademark epiphany moment at the end like most of his other books. Enjoyable but not spectacular.

This is a fun series (and this is book one). It's got all the right fantasy 'tools' and devices to really make a story you have a hard time putting down. The witch is a formidable opponent to the little band of travelers.

I love this series, Terry Brooks added some sci-fi elements. I recommended this series to my friend Steve Salse, who also enjoyed it. It's really fun to read and virtually had no slow parts. There are three books in this series

Starts off strong, but then flops. Introduced a lot of characters which don't last very long through the rest of the trilogy, with a few notable exceptions, and the whole "flying ships" business is still a little strange to me....

This was the first book I read from the Shannara series. I love the "Voyage of Jerle" series. The characters were very easy to relate to and the ending of this book made me run out and look for the next.

A lot quicker pace than the second one. You do have to get through the first thirty pages, where Terry is setting it all up, but then you're, at least I'm, engrossed. Good read.

I really enjoyed this book as well as all the other books that Terry Brooks wrote. I recomend starting to read these books if you really want to get into the Best Authors Fantasies.

My dad gave me a signed copy! Sadly enough I sold it when times got tough... But I didn't like this one much and It took me a while to finish it as I kept stopping to read other books.

This series, though entertaining in a basic fantasy book sense, doesn't have the epic feel or altogether compelling characters of Brooks' earlier Shannara work.

From here on out, the series wanes in interest for me. Too fantastical and so far away from the original shannara, I didn't know what to make of it.

After the first two series, this was a total disappointment. I especially didn't like Walker. It was so mediocre that I didn't read the next series.

This was one of my favorite books Terry Brooks has written. I love the characters. They are easy to like and fun to learn about. Loved this book.

I'm kind of grinding through this one. I have hopes that we've gotten through the back story and have at long last entered the story proper.
