Dirk Danger Loves Life chronicles the narrator (known as Cheesebomb) trying to get his life together with the help of the mysterious Dirk Danger. DDLL is a quick read thanks to Chris Rothe's simple yet hilarious prose. Over the course of their month together, Dirk Danger takes Cheesebomb across an unnamed Canadian city to help him piece together a normal, boring and successful life.[return][return]The book bounces around the city and delves into the past lives of the two men, revealing how their...more

Treasure Island is undoubtedly a fantastic adventure story but I doubt the wisdom of a child being able to understand the story fully. This is not the easiest of stories to follow! This is more along the level of an adult reader.[return][return]A pirate called Billy Bones comes to stay at the inn belonging to the parents of a boy called Jim Hawkins (who narrates the story from a future perspective). It's obvious that Bones is hiding from someone and one night he is tracked down by his enemies. A...more

Interesting, but somewhat repetitious history of how books and the means of shelving them evolved over the centuries. Petroski is an engineer who has written other studies of everyday objects (his history of the pencil is particularly well known). As an engineer, he tends to dwell upon the structural dynamics but, mercifully, not on the mathematics.[return][return]There is a touch of whimsey here and there that borders on the precious, but overall this is an interesting and handsome book for t...more
The audio version of this book is simply awful. I read the first book in the series and listened to the second, narrated by Kathe Mazur. They were both good. The author narrates this book herself. Her voice is grating and whiny, and her delivery is flat. I can't imagine why she and the publisher allowed this to be released. I may read the book sometime in the future, when that voice is out of my head.
