I read this as part of a Book Club I belong to.
Whilst it didn’t suit everybody’s taste within the club, what it did do was prompt interesting debate and conversation between us all and there was a unanimous agreement that it was a damn good read!
‘Monday to Friday Man’ is humorous and light-hearted. It is an ‘easy’ read which was perfect for our first attempt at a book club. Chick-lit fans should read this book.

Due to the absolute bargain price for this on Amazon, along with it’s title and description, it was an easy ‘click to add to basket’ moment! This is a fun and easy to read chick-lit offering which I read over just a few evenings.
Gilly is a very likeable character. She is still getting over the shock of being jilted and trying to make a new life for herself that isn’t dependent on being with that ‘special other person’ the whole time. Her dog walking friends that she meets in the park every day,...more

I thought I was going to enjoy this book, and actually the story was really quite good (particularly the back story about the little sister Megan), but what did my head in was the lead character 'Gilly with a G'. I have never read a book with such an irritating, shallow and immature lead character. A refernce to her either turning 35 or being 35 is included on every second page, and I couldn't stand her 'woe is me attitde' when in actual fact, most people would give their right arm for her kind...more
So I didn't like this book. But that was probably my fault.
Full disclosure - I bought this because it was only 20p. What can I say, I'm a cash-strapped student!I wanted a quick and easy read to distract myself. That was part of the problem though - it's too grounded in the real world to be escapist literature, so instead of escaping stress, I found myself becoming more and more depressed as I read on. Sure, there was emotional depth, and I appreciated the relationship between Gilly and her brothe...more

At first I thought this was just going to be your typical froth. And okay, yeah, it kind of was. The plot revolves around Gilly; a woman who was five minutes shy of being jilted at the altar and has been unlucky in love ever since. Her grand idea, put forward through advice guru estate agent Robert, is to get a lodger - more specifically a Monday to Friday man.
So the plot thickens when attractive and high flying Jack answers her advert. Gilly's dog walking circle are at first ecstatic but as th...more

This was a book that I purchased on a whim. When I’m let loose in a bookstore, I suffer from the ‘magpie-attracted-to-shiny-baubles’ syndrome. This is you typical predictable chick lit book, but with a bit more depth and tackling some important issues. For example, a mother leaving her children after the loss of her young disabled child (the children's sibling); marriage; divorce; falling in and out of love - and knowing when to stop a marriage before it happens; a break up and the inevitable depressed state of the female - and having friends and their dogs to rally around her. Lots happening in this book but it is written in such a lo...more
Monday to Friday Man was one of those books that I saw on the kindle free download chart. It had a number of good reviews so I thought I’d give it a try.
It follows Gilly (with a ‘G’) who is reeling after her fiancé left her weeks before their wedding and she is at a cross roads in her life. She’s about to hit 35 and she’s not sure what she wants to do.
After much soul searching she decides to stay in London and advertise for a Monday to Friday-er – ie: Someone to rent her spare room on a Monday...more

This classic chick-lit fictional novel is a delight to behold, being perfect for taking on holiday or to the beach as it is a light read. Standing out on the shelf with its striking cover it is a book that I would highly recommend, as it will appeal to many kinds of reader who enjoy romance, interesting storylines and a gripping tale. One follows the main character Gilly Brown as she embarks upon a new future life in London with her cute dog Ruskin, and sets up finding a lodger. Such a tenant is...more
I loved this book, only picked it up because it was 3 for £10 and could not find the 3rd book. I'm so glad I did.

I received Monday to Friday man free through Goodreads First Reads and because I hardly ever win stuff I was understandably excited. I wish I had liked this book, the plot was essentially quite good, the characters had the potential to be really cute and funny but ultimately after reading it I felt like I had just wasted a good few hours of my life.

Gilly, at 34, is having a rather early mid-life crisis. She's not sure if she wants to stay in London, recovering from being jilted just a fortnight before her wedding. But when she starts looking at living further afield, an old friend suggests she take in a "Monday to Friday' lodger to help pay her bills. After several amusingly dreadful applicants, the almost perfect Jack turns up. His main fault is that he's quite secretive about himself, even after they start - inevitably - an affair.

Two words: 1.Bridget 2.Jones. I did enjoy reading this book but actually found myself in sheer disbelief at some points because of its unarguable similarity to Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones's Diary.
The whole concept of the book is near on identical (yes I know that most stories are the same) and I was prepared to overcome this until I stumbled across scenes such as the flash forward to the dreamy wedding - straight out of Bridget Jones. Somewhere later in the book (I can't remember exactly wher...more

I downloaded this book because it was at the top of the Kindle chart and selling at 20p. I also liked the look of the front cover, so I thought, why not?!
I am so glad that I did. Recently, I have been very lucky on the great novel front. Everything I've read recently (from authors previously unknown to me) have been great. This was no exception.

I downloaded this book for two reasons, it was cheap on Amazon and I was going for a girly weekend at a health spa and wanted something light.
It wasn't my usual type of book but I did find it quite entertaining, but very predictable. I also got confused by timespans, it seemed like a few days had passed but then it turned out it was months, or minutes and it was hours.

I loved this book. Its touchingly (is that a word?) written. I was bawling my eyes out when Guy lights a candle for Megan and the way that Alice has written in the storyline of Megan is so beautiful. I couldn't put this book down, and read it really quickly. It touches so many subjects without getting heavy and is well described in that I could picture every scene and character. Guy was definitely my favourite I could see exactly what he looked like and loved the hats! And I was routing for him...more
Against my will I enjoyed this. What I liked was how realistic it was, and also the older age group. Meaning that over the age 30 isn't so different from being under 30, aside from the fact that people have children instead of talking about having children. There's a lot of serious issues tackled in here, but done in such (for lack of a better term) grown up way that I found myself being drawn into the lives of the characters. I did like that everyone wasn't perfect and especially the way that e...more
I've had this book for a couple of months, but I should have read it sooner! This book was really captivating, funny and soooo entertaining.
Gilly Brown as the main character, couldn't have been more charming and likable. From the beginning, I was rooting for her to get over her ex and to move on with her life. Gilly was a caring person, but a bit too naive for me. She had fallen for the wrong guy- Jack who was very handsome, but not marriage material. Gilly seemed a bit too lost for me, because...more

First as someone who's nearing 30 I couldn't imagined myself moving to a remote country all by myself. So I thought Gilly with a G is somewhat brave enough to do that and at first look I like her. At least she's independent not too clingy materially to a man albeit emotionally she is, and as I go deeper, she became shallow and gullible, sometimes clueless and desperate. Will the real Ginny please stand up?

At first I expected the usual, a very descriptive and conventional chick flick-ey book but surprisingly I was disappointed it wasn't that. Although there were the one or two fashion montages/makeovers, the book was very vague in terms of tenses and very brief when in want of detail. Perhaps i like the intricate details and sometimes the unnecessary background information but I felt that since it was a romance book there should have been a little more than the subtle tones of romance (if that mak...more
For "chick lit," this book is surprisingly thoughtful. The main character, Gilly, displays far more self-insight than the average protagonist of this kind of book. Though she makes unwise choices at times, you understand why she makes them and she understands the risks she is taking. The behavior of all of the characters makes sense and the plot doesn't fall into typical romantic comedy traps. I found there were a lot of lines I was underlining because I understood and connected to Gilly's situa...more
It took me two tries to get into this, but I ended up enjoying it. The characters are fun and the author gives the narrator an interesting and touching family back story that added depth to an otherwise very light read. I feel like maybe the editor didn't do a perfect job, because there are weird bits where the narrator is overstating obvious plot points and doing a whole lot of telling instead of showing. Just bits of clumsy writing that could have been easily cleaned up. Otherwise quite good....more

I don't normally read this sort of book but I downloaded it because it was 20p. I found the story lighthearted and simple, and I whizzed through it in two days. The book made me laugh, and nearly cry in places, and I found the characters likeable. I did find the main character very immature for 35 mind you, and at just 20 myself, I felt I had plenty of advice to offer her! The story is predictable, and cheesy in places, and its obviously no great literary feat; it won't change your life and you...more
A lovely, light holiday read. The author made the characters likeable and I especially liked the 'flashbacks' to the childhood of the main character, Gilly. They gave enough information about her relationship with her twin brother, their loss of their disabled younger sister Megan and the subsequent 'loss' of their mother to make the character real and believable.

I enjoyed this light hearted easy read. The characters were likeable though a bit more depth on some of them would have added to the story. I read this fairly quickly for me in a matter of days. Being a northerner I couldn't comment on the image of 'London Life' portrayed in the story as things are very different up here. I thought it could be possible anyway. There were places in the story where I felt like yelling at the main character to tell her to stop being such a 'drip'. It kept me intere...more
My to-read pile is far too big to waste time on this.
I got to page 74 and I couldn't read anymore! I was after a light, easy read after reading a few heavy going books and found this on my Kindle - shouldn't have bothered.
*I apologise in advance, but I needed to get this rant out!*
For starters, Gilly is SO shallow, self-obsessed, irritating and just a very unlikeable character. I didn't care about her at all. In the first few pages she moans about having to take a packed lunch into work instead...more

This was on sale on Amazon for 20 pence and I couldn't resist. I'd say that it gave me 20p worth of entertainment, possibly slightly more.

At the age of eighteen Alice had been awarded a tennis scholarship to America when she experienced pain in her right hand. It was rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and she hasn’t picked up a tennis racket since, a sadness that shall always be with her. The theme of disability features in her fiction, but there is nothing gloomy about Alice or her work. Rather this gives her fiction the added dimension of...more
