Finished it last night. I liked it. Not really anything extraordinary but it was about as Action-y as an episode of X-Files or something equally entertaining. I figured out what was happening halfway through the book but the ending was still satisfying.

When I first saw the cover for this book, I immediately dismissed it. I thought it was a huge Frank Miller rip-off. But then it turns out that the cover is actually by Frank Miller and... i don't know why they decided to put that... on there. ...more

I have been a long time fan of Greg Rucka’s work in comics, ever since he started writing Gotham Central, DC’s NYPD Blue meets Batman series. As a younger lad, I was a huge fan of the Batman animated series. In that series, one of the original characters introduced was the character of Renee Montoya. Montoya was a Hispanic police officer who regularly crossed the path of Batman. Years later, when Gotham Central started, Rucka introduced Montoya into the DC universe as one of GCPD’s bes...more

This is an excellent piece of detective fiction. Greg Rucka hails from the style of detective writing that's not exactly hard-boiled or noir, but still very fast-paced and action oriented, without a lot of introspection or flowery prose. Steve Leiber succeeds in making Antarctica look lonely, dangerous, and beautiful with his sparse black and white illustrations. Short and sweet, it's an excellent if simple murder mystery tale with well-paced story telling, and a compelling lead character. And I...more

A solid tale of murder and betrayal in the coldest, loneliest place on earth. It's got a great character at the center of things, Carrie Stetko, a U.S. Marshal with a checkered past stuck on Antarctic duty where her torchered soul finds welcome in the desolation and relative peace found on the ice. However, when a body is discovered in her jurisdiction, she finds that the darkness of humanity extends even to the bottom of the world. It's a taught thriller, with art that makes you feel like yo...more

A solid "who dun it" story set in the south pole. Some good art in the book that really pushes across the point of low visability with a simple story. No big twists or turns and most of the plot is handed to the reader without much investigation or difficulty but I liked it enough to plan on reading the second book in the series.

I wanted SO MUCH to love this book, Antarctica being one of my secret joys and fiction of it being so far between -- and a comic book, at that! What could be cooler? I'm not sure whether it was the writing or the art, though, but somehow the book didn't quite manage to gel, though it got better in the second half.

The mystery part of this detective story didn't stand out but the characters do. To me, there was just something about the artwork style that really brought the tension and the atmosphere to life.

I can't remember when I read this, but when I saw it on Terry's list, I had to add it back to my list. It's a simply tale of murder and betrayal in Antartica with a female lead.

I reread this book recently. I'm more amazed by the tightness of the plot and the richness of characterization this time around.

Interesting, sort of neat premise, looks nice and semi-rough, but doesn't work the mystery angle enough to really stand out.

I just had a hard time getting into this one. And I found it hard to make out a lot of the pictures. I wanted to like it.
