I just finished this today and enjoyed it. It's a very past paced book about a former CIA employee who got fired for unknown reasons many years ago. Now living as a writer, a wife & a mom, she's been contacted by someone in her past who needs help and is willing to tell her why she was fired from the CIA.

This isn't a novel about one of the lady lawyers working at Bennie Rosato's all-female law firm; instead, it features one "bright, buoyant, and borderline luscious Katie Schottland," who 15 years earlier had a good job as an analyst at the CIA but was abruptly fired for reasons that were never made known to her, even though she was having an affair with her boss at the time … recovering from her post-firing depression, Katie went on to write a novel about CIA agents that got turned i...more

Katie used to work for the CIA. One day, fifteen years ago, she got fired-- NO explanation! Since then she has written a spy novel, which was adapted as a fairly successful television show. You would think she would be happy, but somehow there is something missing. Then an acquaintance from her days at the CIA calls to talk to her about a matter of national importance-- and then promptly disappears. Soon, Katie is racking her brain and trying to figure out what secret she might know from her...more

Susan Isaacs may not be Jane Austen, but she's a terrifically entertaining writer who has mastered multiple genres and brings a sense of humor, tight writing, and clever plots and characters to plucky amateur detective fiction, family sagas, and other forms that aren't often given such classy treatment. In this book, a NYC mom/TV writer/ex-CIA analyst gets a mysterious call from a former colleague, which sends her on a mission to discover exactly why she was fired from the agency years before. I...more

Lovers of spy novels, chic lit
Katie Schottland was unjustly fired from the CIA 15 years ago. A call from a former acquaintance at the agency starts her on a search for the reason why she had lost her job and clues point to shady dealings back when East Germany fell.
A fun read - the main character is gutsy and is upfront about her failings. She's not one for self-analysis but she can see herself when others point out her flaws. The plot took a while to get going and the character's motivation in investigating her pa...more

While this was fun (most of the time) and a quick read (except where it got bogged down with too much espionage background), I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as Susan Isaacs previous novels. Nonetheless, I did laugh sometimes (although not as loud and frequently as, say...Compromising Positions..) and I did get scared...once. You get the idea...

A very quick read; kind of a combination of spy novel and chick-lit. Parts were pretty funny, and although you can guess "who did it" by like page 35, you have no idea why until the very end. You also have no idea how... even after the book ends. Kind of annoying. But another quick, fun summer read.

A fun airplane read - feisty, sexy female does some espionage - Isaacs is good at strong female characters, but with lots of humor. Definitely light, though. Has anyone noticed I'm reading totally light stuff lately; got to get a life...as soon as I stop traveling!

I enjoy the author's style, but I'm not sure I actually enjoyed the book. It seemed like something I should have found more exciting or interesting, but never exactly did. I grow weary of books set in in New York City and I never was able to suspend disbelief.

I am not invested in this character. I keep reading but it is taking me FOREVER. I am not relating and NOT caring what happens. I should just give up but,....sadly I will try to make it to the end. Not a great review up to this point...pg 101?!!!

Well, I have been a fan of Susan Isaacs in the past but this one was pretty disappointing. It just seemed like it went on and on forever with very little actually happening. I don't think anyone in my book club liked it very much. Sorry!

Easy and amusing beach/plane reading. Would the main character be trotting off to investigate possible CIA shenanigans if she weren't in full-blown "I've got turning-40 angst" mode? But, hey, this is fiction ... isn't it??

For me, this was an unremarkable book. The writing was spritely, full of humor. The characters were somewhat enjoyable. But when all was said and done, it was a spy novel. And I never have cared for spy novels.

I really liked this book until the very end. I liked the main character. She was fun to read about but the last 40 pages or so seemed as if the author just wanted to finish the book and get it over with.

I have been snared by the "buy 1, get 1 half off" table again! This book inspired me to create a new shelf, "Can't Finish," for the books that are not worth my time. Reads like a bad tv-movie script.

This book was okay, a little tough to get through. A dialogue would start but it took her a whole page of description before getting to the next line of dialogue. That's one of my biggest pet peeves....

Too many books, too little time. This is one I gave up on. Did not hold my interest. My rule of thumb is - give a book 50-100 pages. If it doesn't grab you - drop it. This one did not make the cut.

I like Susan Isaacs books a lot as the heroine is always sassy, smart and slightly neurotic. She writes about characters who share the mundane of life with the terror of unexpected murder.

Characters were a little annoying. Very one-dimensional. And I disliked the heroine's humour. It was a little too complex with the spy stuff. But a fun piece of fluff nevertheless.

A quick read. The heroine is a smart, funny and insecure but she has attitude and guts. She has you laughing and scared for her safety at the same time. A fun read.
