After all I'd heard about this series, and the many recommendations I'd seen, I was kind of shocked to find how badly this was written.

This is supposed to be the best insight into the character of Darcy and instead we get inconsistency and pointless detail. In general, I disagree with the interpretation that has Darcy madly in love with Elizabeth about .3 seconds after insulting her at the Netherfield Assembly. But I could put up with that if it were done well. This Darcy swings confusingly...more

"Ten thousand a year and a large estate in Derbyshire!" That was all Mrs. Bennet desired to know of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy before she began to entertain hopes that one of her daughters would attract his attention. In Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen reveals little of her creation's past or present before banishing him for quite two thirds of her book. But, who is Fitzwilliam Darcy?

An Assembly Such as This, the first book of the Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman trilogy, answers that int...more

How ungrateful I must seem! This book was a Valentine's Day gift from my husband, intended to delight a complete Austenophile like me. And I was indeed enchanted with the first few chapters, for they tell the story of Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy from the gentleman's point of view. Part of the great charm of Pride & Prejudice lies in the mystery surrounding Mr. Darcy. What are we to think of this quintessentially stiff-upper-lipped toff when he inexplicably snubs the sparkling Miss Ben...more

I have yet to find an attempted Pride and Prejudice sequel to be worth my time. This novel is the first that really does the story justice. While this book isn't a sequel, it's a wannabe adaptation: the first of three novels which basically retell the story of Pride and Prejudice from the viewpoint of Mr. Darcy. A viewpoint that Austen readers have wondered about since the novel was published. This one ends after the ball at Netherfield, with Darcy and Miss Bingley conspiring to remove Char...more

This is a retelling of the story of Pride and Prejudice written from the point of view of Darcy. It is broken up into three novels instead of the original one and I felt like it was a bit stretched up and filled with "empty calories".
I think I picked this book up for same reason that most people do - because we love Jane Austen and there just isn't enough of it so we hope we can find another entrance into the regency period that will be as good. Unfortunately this wasn't. It comes ...more

Having read and been exceedingly pleased with "Mr. Darcy's Diary" by Amanda Grange, I'd heard that it was a condensed version of Pamela Aidan's "Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman" trilogy, which I decided to give a try. I really liked this book and fully expect to enjoy the other two in the series as well. The author is staying true to Pride & Prejudice, characters and prose alike, which is all I ever ask of authors ambitious enough to take on such a classic. In my experien...more

There seem to be a lot of books based on Jane Austen's works lately and I've been reading a few of them. I heard a lot about this series and was anxious to get it from the library. I started it as soon as I got it and found it a quick read.

The basic idea is to tell the story of Pride and Prejudice from Mr. Darcy's point of view. I saw the BBC version with Colin Firth not too long ago on PBS, so the story was still fresh in my mind.

I liked the story and I liked her interpretation of the c...more

I don't generally read fan fiction, esp. Austen fanfic, because who, after all, could write like Austen? And frankly, I've never felt the need to delve more deeply into Darcy's life; Austen's depiction of him makes his love of Elizabeth seem perfectly natural and right, with no additional explanation necessary or desirable. While I enjoyed reading it somewhat, this book did not change my views on fanfic in any way. I do think the author manages to capture Darcy quite nicely, but if I hadn't read...more

Better than some Austen fan fiction. It is clearly the work of a fan of the BBC/A&E adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, but just as clearly the work of a fan who was not first introduced to Austen through that adaptation. I do think that the Darcy in the novel is as much based on Andrew Davies'/ Colin Firth's character as it is on Jane Austen's character. But, that's OK. I love Colin Firth's Darcy.

This is by no means a great book, but I enjoyed it--read the whole book in a Sunda...more

I really love the idea of this book...exploring the story from Mr. Darcy's perspective. When people think of Jane Austen they usually think of the strong women who are the central characters to her works. But one does have to wonder about the man who was able to win over the heart of one of the most well known and loved heroines in literature.

I thought that the author kept well to Jane's original characterization of Mr. Darcy and respected her creation. I was afraid that she would take t...more

I'm afraid that I probably won't finish this book. And my apologies to the intellectual person who recommended it but here is my assessment of this book. This author is a much better writer than Elizabeth Aston. But that is all I can say. If you are utterly obsessed with Mr. Darcy. If you can't get enough of what might go on in his brilliant mind or would like someone else's opinion on the subject, you may find this book quite interesting. I have the attention span for children's and teens' fi...more

This is the first book in Aiden's Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman trilogy, and it tells the events and occurances in Pride and Prejudice from the viewpoint of Mr. Darcy.
I was skeptical of this book at first, but as a fan of Pride and Prejudice, my curiosity was peaked. After all, who does not want to know more about the enigmatic Mr. Darcy! After reading the book, I was glad I took the risk. I loved reliving the events of Pride and Prejudice from the viewpoint of Mr. Darcy, and appreciated how ...more

If you ever wondered what was going through Darcy's mind during the story told from Elizabeth's point of view, here's a good book to try out! The first in what Oscar Wilde mockingly derided - "a three-volume novel" - this book covers up through the ball at Netherfield. There is more than enough to make it an entertaining addition to the myriad of fan fiction inspired by Pride & Prejudice.

Aidan discusses Darcy's concerns with his sister's health and happiness after the disap...more

5 stars if you love Pride and Prejudice and are familiar with it.

3-4 stars if you love Pride and Prejudice from the movies (the Colin Firth version that is--Keira Knightly bit off waaaaaay more than she could chew, and don't even get me started on most of the other characters, the chickens in the house, etc.), but are not familiar with the novel.

Zero stars if you don't already enjoy Pride and Prejudice.

Okay, This was LAME. The whole series. Being an avid Jane Austen fan, when I heard that there was a good addition to the list of P&P sequels and spin-offs, I was all gung-ho on reading them. I even bought them at Costco, I was so sure they were going to be good. Boy was I wrong! I was either gagging or gafawing the entire time. Aidan dwelt far to long on Darcy's 'Passion'. About every other page was riddled with his sighs and and his "Heart thudding against his rib-cage", and his ...more

This is by far my favorite retelling of Pride and Prejudice from Darcy's side. 3 books in the series.

1) Because I think she had a good sense of who Darcy was as a whole person, how he thought, what drove him to do the things he did, the type of brother and friend he was. So many others just steal all of the conversations from Austen and then add in the thoughts they think were going through Colin Firth's head as he played Darcy.

2)It's not actually in the Austen style of writing which ma...more

This was a great trilogy. It starts with An Assembly Such As This, then Duty and Desire and ends with These Three Remain. It follows Fitzwilliam Darcy through Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice (in three books instead of her one). I was skeptical about trying another Pride and Prejudice fan fiction since the other I read was so horrible. I was very surprised at how immersed I became with these books and read them way into the night. It has all the conversations from Austen's Pride and Prejudice b...more

This is fanliterature of Jane Austen, the first third of Pride and Prejudice from Mr. Darcy's perspective. I never expected it to compare to Austen's masterpiece, so I wasn't too dissapointed. I find that the author simply is trying to make Elizabeth's thoughts a mystery, just as Mr Darcy's are in the original. It works for the most part, but the author tries to put in more about the time period- Darcy's love of horses, his relationship with his servants, the waltz being introduced, etc. It's in...more

I'm such a fan of P&P, that I'm always willing to give the many spin offs a fighting chance, and in almost every instance I'm bitterly disappointed. But in this case, I actually enjoyed myself, and I chalk it up to the fact that a. the author stayed pretty true to Austen's idea of the relationship between Elizabeth and Darcy, and b. it wasn't a sequel. It was essentially the same story, only it was told through Darcy's perceptions, and I know I'm not the first one to question what in the wo...more

This is the first book of a trilogy that describe the events of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice from Mr. Darcy's point of view. The premise sounds a little corny, but I found the books to be well written and inventive.

The book does more than just present the same events that are in Pride and Prejudice. It fills in the missing time periods where Pride and Prejudice doesn't mention what Mr. Darcy was doing or th...more
