My least favorite Chekhov story. Usually I easily give 4 -5 stars for anything coming from Anton Chekhov. This is not a bad story by any means , its just not quite up there with the same level of high standards Chekhov usually sets in his tales. There's not enough story depth hence frankly, this is bit disappointing.

I liked the character. Im noticing that Chekhov likes to focus in on supposedly insignificant things and show them off, but not in a significant way, which might be why I haven't heard of him til now.
An interesting short story on class and dignity.

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was born in the small seaport of Taganrog, southern Russia, the son of a grocer. Chekhov's grandfather was a serf, who had bought his own freedom and that of his three sons in 1841. He also taught himself to read and write. Yevgenia Morozova, Chekhov's mother, was the daughter of a cloth merchant.
