In this story we meet Ethan Banning, PI from Afterlife. I know I am not alone in saying that I love Ethan Banning! He is snarky and can be a bit mean sometimes. But he is smart and witty, and much better at being a PI than he lets us all believe.
In this short little intro to all that is Ethan, he’s sitting in a bar drinking when he is approached for a job. It seems that the morgue is haunted by the ghost of a young woman who was murdered!

I have AFTERLIFE and DEMONIZED--which are both books set in Naomi Clark's Shoregrave series--on my Kindle already, but when I found out that this short story is where it all begins for Ethan, I decided to start here. And I was totally sucked into this world.
Ethan is a PI--I love PI stories, btw--who probably drinks and smokes too much. He doesn't seem very PC for today's standard's, but you know, that's why I liked him so much. lol.

The Ethan Banning Files are series of short stories starring Naomi Clark's rough-around-the-edges P.I. These three stories are a great introduction to one of Clark's most addictive characters- they're like an Ethan Banning gateway drug. Once you get a glimpse of the train wreck that is his life, it's hard to look away.
"Ungrateful Dead" is creepy, spooky, and hysterical. When Ethan's friend Charlie, a morgue attendant, comes to him with a unique problem, he has to decide just how far he's willing...more

I love the narrative voice here, but this is a very short story and there's really not much to it. Worthwhile mostly as a prequel to Demonized.

Naomi Clark lives in Cambridge and is a mild-mannered office worker by day, but a slightly crazed writer by night. She has a perfectly healthy obsession with giant sea creatures and a preference for vodka-based cocktails. When she's not writing, Naomi is probably either reading or watching 80s cartoon shows, and sometimes she manages to do all three at once.
