This is the most amazing book ever!!! It is historical fiction based on present day humans and the humans that were one step down from us on the ladder of evolution. A young orphaned girl that is one of 'us' so to speak is adopted by a caring medicine woman of the Clan of the Cavebear. What follows is an outstanding story of this young blonde haired, blue eyed girl's survival and trying to fit in with a tribe that considers her ugly and bad luck. Their lifestyles are so different, yet someh...more

I have hte valley of horses but not the clan of the cave bears. The first one (clan of hte cave bears) is about a native tribe who find a blonde haired human from a differnt very scarse clan. They take her in and have her adapt to there way of live. They teach her about plants and being a good wife and living in there world. The very end she goes off to find her own kind.
This is were the 2nd book picks up. She is a grown women on here own. She lives in her own cave near a wild heard of horses...more

This series is by far my FAVORITE set of books ever written. Auel just creates a totally believable story - you can envision these people living, discovering and evolving with every turn of the page. I think it read it for the first time back in 1990 but I would have to say that I have re-read the series everytime a new book comes out and then even a couple times in between. I would recommend this book to anyone although as you get into the second book and beyond there is some adult content t...more

Yes, it's a bit far fetched that a young woman singlehandedly invented spear throwers and sewing needles, discovered fire stones, and domesticated animals all before she turned 19 way back in pre-history...BUt these are my all time favorite books that I reread every year or two. Ayla is the main character who is raised by Neanderthals after her family dies in an earthquake. She eventually travels off into the wilderness and all the books in the series describe her adventures. Be prepared for s...more

The first two of these were pretty good, vivid imagery and the idea of using the archeological record to create a story provided entertaining reads. then they started to get very redundant and I began to be vastly irritabled about how MANY THINGS the protagonist was "inventing" or figuring out. flint sparking fire, birth control and the bow and arrow, she basically had the education of that french boy who grew up with wolves but she's supposed to be the cavewoman einstein. It got old.

I read this series years ago when they first came out after living in Africa for six years. I had this connection with Ayla. I was kind of a tom boy in the hillsides of San Bernardino, California when it was undeveloped. Climbing tree and collecting lizards and bugs was my past time. Then living in Africa really put me there though Clan is about the European experience at the early time of man's evolution.

Have you ever wondered what it might be like to live in pre-historic times, before the most-basic moder conveniences that we all take for granted and completely at the mercy of the whims of Mama-Nature? Nope, not me.....

Great story of the life of one newly minted human-girl in a world full of "troglodytes"-- Yeah, and all your neighbors are Cro-Magnon!=-o)

The second in the series, it tells the back story so reading them in rapid sequence is not needed (in fact I disgourage it) The first time I read it, I skipped over half, only caring about the Female lead, however have come to enjoy the rest as well. Excruciatingly detailed. Some very naughty bits.

I liked this book a lot, but, a warning, it's looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong, i am NOT kidding. But it's a good adventure story, and a good historical fiction kind of a thing. I enjoyed it a lot, and would like to read the whole series if i ever have that much time to spend...

A continuation story of the woman from The Clan of The Cave Bear book whose strength and intelligence forces her to leave a home and family she loved to venture off into an unknown future. It carrys on the struggle during the Ice Age where Cro-Magnon and Neanderthal man may have co-existed.

Addicting series of books. Author is a great story teller and a fast read. You have to read them in sequence. Very visual accounts of early Cro-Magnun man in eastern Asia and Europe and the end of the Neanderthals...or maybe some of us are their descendents.

The first two books are two of my favorite books of all time, and all of them represent a special bond with my best friend. When I need a literary pick-me-up, I always begin reading "Valley" at a certain point and then finish the book.

Adventurous, raw, earthly, natural!! Be transported back to prehistoric time and fall in love the culture and the pure spiritual essence of our ancestors. I highly recommend this book. Fictional but based on scientific historical facts.

Stole this from my parent's bookshelf when they were out. Wow- it rocked my naive little world since I was still in elementary school. Hooked me, though! On to the others, in secret of course, till I was older!

A time when Cro-Magnon and Neanderthal came into contact. Told through the eyes of a young blond orphan girl.
Historical and educational.
Jean A. supposedly puts years of research into each novel.

(I read all in series.) Chick books. I liked these books - the author researched the material very thoroughly - but I could have done without the romance-novel sex scenes.

I only read Clan of the Cave Bear (actually, I listened to it on CD). It was really interesting! Slow in MANY parts, but you really got to like the characters.

This book is terrible. But, around page 74, it gets super-hot. Like, throbbing member hot. Five stars for making me want to get it on with a cave man. Who knew?
