The beginning of this story reminded me a bit of Laura Numeroff's If You Give a Moose a Muffin. It seemed that the author was purposely trying to create a pattern with the storyline yet it ended up feeling a bit scattered and disjointed to me. That said, it was funny in several places, I loved the whole library book thread, and I enjoyed the illustrations. I think kids will have a very good time with this book.

I had no idea that this book would be promoting libraries. Yay us! I liked the humor in this book. I did. I just don't know how well the kids will follow along to catch that humor. I know my preschoolers wouldn't. Maybe the K-5 would. And by that I mean in a storytime or a lap-read. But even in storytime I question if this book would come off that well. Plus, I don't know if I'll have more of the younger end or the older end. I think I'll save it for some book-talking.

8/5/10 I'd bee More...

This book actually gave me the hiccups reading! It also includes themes of sibling rivalry and how to get along with others which can be very beneficial to children. A librarian picked this book out for me and it also teaches children how to behave at the library. Maybe she was trying to tell me something haha! Great book!

This book just plain confused me. The author seemed to be trying to tell kids how to properly treat library books, as shown by the list of rules at the end. The story started off in the library but quickly turned into some fantasy involving a hippo, where one mishap led to another, all of which brought them with the hippo (which I thought had been imaginary) back to the library to return the books. I also didn't like the depiction of the librarian as an old lady with geeky glasses. Speaking More...

I read this book at a school visit yesterday, it was a lot of fun. The kids particularly liked the hiccuping hippo puppet I brought in! I passed it around and the kids all made the hippo hiccup!

This book is about a delightful madcap adventure that kids will love. In the meantime the readers are learning respect for the library and library materials. Wonderful!

i realize that the book is intended to be funny but i found it uselessly repetitive. set in library but not a pull enough to use for library tours.

Very fun read for just a regular storytime (the kids today enjoyed it a great deal, especially when the little sister lands on the library roof) but this story could also be used for a get-acquainted classroom visit to the library (amusing library rules at the end of the book are fun for the kids, too). My only gripe is that the librarian, while helpful and brave, is also ancient and not so attractive. Come on, people, Batgirl was a librarian! Time to shake up that myth and draw some cute lib More...

I like the illustrations of this book, but the story sounds choppy and at many points doesn't make sense to me.

It's not my favorite, but I have already read it 4 times and it is tolerable. It sort of reminds me of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, etc.
It rambles, and that is a fun thing for little kids, as well as adults who think in circles.
