Ao ler a sinopse pareceu-me tratar-se de mais um romance fútil em que as três protagonistas não passavam de meninas mimadas decididas a levar a sua avante. Disseram-me que era mais que isso. E tinham razão!

I could not put this one down.

I loved the characters of all sisters. I couldnt tell you which one was my favourite out of Caitlin and Elizabeth, both were completely different characters but very likeable and you wanted them both to work things out and be happy. What I liked about this was how human the characters felt not just the sisters, but the other family members, the husbands etc. They all made mistakes, whether it was trusting the wrong person, or having an affair but it also showed how...more

This is going to be a gushing review. Sure, the book will never win the Pulitzer prize. It will never be held up as a literary classic. But, as an example of the bonkbuster/family saga genre, it is vastly superior to many of the offerings on the shelves.

Hyland writes with a real warmth for her subject matter - her characters jump into life in three dimensional fashion, not one of them without both flaws and virtues. I really cared about the three Melville girls - and I think my favourite was Elizabeth. Her particular journey from icy young socialite to businesswoman and then mother showed the strength in Hyland's writing - at times I hated Elizabeth, but I was always interested in finding out what would happen to her.

I have my quibbles. I felt that Caitlun reconciled a little too readily with her father; the whole storyline concerning Amber and her drug abuse could have easily been either extended or removed entirely - in its current form, I would far rather have read more about Elizabeth and Caitlyn, because I didn't really become invested in Amber's plight.

I will warn that there is sex in this book - it is more Jilly Cooper than Barbara Taylor Bradford - and there are a couple of shocking instances (including one scene of, essentially, rape, which made my jaw drop), but this is nothing that readers of bonkbusters won't have encountered before.

I was drawn into this tale - to the point that I didn't want to put it down for anything! I begrudged anything that took me away from reading, and felt constantly compelled to continue - the term "page turner" was coined for this book! The chapters were short and neat, though, which meant it was incredibly easy to pick up and put down where necessary.

Considering the size, I whipped through this in double quick time, devouring the tale of the Melville sisters voraciously. Hyland has penned an absolute gem of a novel, considering this was her debut: writing with confidence and a voice that grips immediately. I can't wait to tackle her next piece of work! (less)

I am in love with this book. It was so amazing and delightful to watch the three daughters of William Melville grow and mature throughout their experiences. It's been a long time since I've read a book like this - glamour, wealth, family feuds, sex, fortune, and I adored every page of it. Reading it in the sunshine on a Greek island was the perfect place to lose myself in this very well written story of three sisters - the daughters of the wealthy Melville family.

Originally, I picked this book up for a bit of light summer reading. However, parts of this book did not make me feel light and happy (what summer reading should do). Here's what you need to know:

1. Despite the cover this is not a "Gossip Girl" type book.
2. Somewhat surprising and interesting plot but if you think about it, you could probably guess it.
3. There are a ton of characters.
4. The characters are all interesting and unique.

Angefangen mit Elizabeth an deren krankhaften Ehrgeiz beinah ihre Ehe zerbricht, hinzu Ambers Hang zu falschen Freunden, der dazu führt das sie tief sinkt und zu guter letzt drogenabhängig wird. Jede Schwester ist mir auf ihre Weise ans Herz gewachsen und ich habe als Leser ihre Glanzseiten erlebt, aber auch ihre tiefsten Niederlagen. Wie sie sich verliebten, ihre Herzen gebrochen wurden, Ehen zerbrachen, Träume in Erfüllung gingen und das sie sich trotz aller Gegensätzlichkeiten zusammenraufen um das Familienunternehmen in neuem Glanz erstrahlen lassen. Die Geschichte ist nicht eben anspruchsvoll und natürlich wendet sich am Ende alles zum Guten, aber ich wurde über 600 Seiten sehr gut unterhalten, denn Tara Hyland schaffte es mit ihrem erzählerischen Talent mich hineinzuversetzen in diese schöne, oberflächliche, aber auch zerstörerische Welt und das ist meiner Meinung nach die Hauptsache an einem guten Buch.

A primeira ideia que me passou pela cabeça seria um romance cheio de intrigas, ciúmes e lutas entre as três irmãs para obter o controlo da empresa, mas afinal o que encontrei foi exactamente o contrário. Claro que temos um pouco disso tudo, mas primeiramente a história foca-se no crescimento de cada uma das filhas de William Melville e nos acontecimentos chave que marcaram certas alturas das suas vidas, justificando um pouco o caracter de cada uma.
Sendo a mais velha e presumível herdeira, Elizabeth foi educada de forma mais dura. Era a melhor em tudo e gostava de o ser para poder chamar a atenção do pai. Caitlin era a filha do meio, ilegítima, fruto de um relacionamento ilícito de seu pai com uma funcionária da empresa que cedo acaba por morrer de cancro, muda-se para a casa do pai aos 15 anos e por causa de um equívoco cresce revoltada e ansiosa por sair de casa. Assim que chega a maioridade parte para Paris e torna-se numa estilista de sucesso e Amber, a mais nova e mimada, habituada a ter tudo quanto quer através de profundas birras, cresce com o sonho de ter a vida fácil de modelo, mas acaba por ver-se envolvida numa vida de excessos e drogas.
Até ao dia em que a empresa da família se encontra com problemas económicos e veem-se obrigadas a juntar esforços para salvar o império da família.
Uma história carregada não só de ciúme e intriga, mas também com bastante romance e com uma enorme lição de vida, porque mesmo dentro de uma família nem tudo é o que parece e nem todos são confiáveis. É um livro que apesar do ter um tema muito usado, mostra o quanto a vida é difícil e que ser rico não é tudo na vida. Tara Hyland mostra ser um génio da literatura romântica ao conseguir juntar todos os elementos presentes e mesmo assim conseguir uma história concisa que não deixa de encantar o seu leitor. Com uma linguagem simples descreve ambientes, personagens e eventos sem tornar a leitura monótona, algo que muitas vezes se torna difícil. Recomendo este livro. Fico à espera de mais livros da autora.

This book was great, although tragic. I didn't know if I'd like it much because of the incredibly depressing start, but it turned out fine in the end and was a delight to read. The back cover synopsis explains that one of the sisters come into the world of the other sisters when she's older and not really accepted. The book chronicles the story from that point onward, through plenty of drama, tragedy, acceptance and eventually, family healing.

A sappy book this is not - there are plenty of horrible scenes to behold. A gang/date rape, and then the most disturbing scene of the book, where one of the women gets so into drug abuse and addiction she ends up prostituting herself, ends up being so out of it she wakes up to see a bloody baseball bat that's been used "there" on her. The author doesn't shy away at all from delicacies and dives straight into how dark things grow when lives gets twisted.

For a first book the writing style of the author was talented and confident. She gripped my readers brain as she led me through this the intricate story of the sisters and all involved with them at a personable and rapid pace, holding little back.

I loved the characters. All held warmth, positive traits and negative faults. Their three-dimensional lives almost jumped off the page. Elizabeth, Carolyn and Amber were all interesting - and completely different - paper people. The father could seem offstandish and he was completely devoted to his work; however, I really dug his character and how he handled things when they grew rough. I especially loved how he handled the blackmail photos when he walked in that door, awesome.

The ending wrapped it up in a worthy way, but with a bittersweet touch. While the book is like a fascinating soap opera you can't change the channel to, there are some minor flaws. For one there's a a decent amount of character swapping, and there's a lot of minor characters to keep up with as well. The books a little predictable and slightly fluffy without high enough substance to merit five stars, but it makes great reading, especially by the pool and for summertime.

If you dig family sagas, this one you need to read, especially if you're also a fan of chick lit.(less)

It's funny. This book has two seperate listings in Goodreads. Most of the time when it's a different cover they still list them together. The funny part is that this listing people mostly rate it a 2-3 star and the other listing people have rated it a 4-5 star.

The gorgeous proof of Tara Hyland’s debut novel Daughters of Fortune landed on my doorstep a few weeks ago, and I was really curious to see what it was going to be like. It sounded very much in the vein of Tilly and Louise Bagshawe, Lulu Taylor and Olivia Darling, all authors that I love so I was pretty sure I was going to enjoy this book. I adore the gorgeous blue cover, and think it will really make it stand out in bookshops simply because it looks so elegant and the blue is just divine. Tara also revealed the American cover on her website, and we featured it in a Cover Wars post a while back, but I definitely prefer the UK cover! Anyway, back to the review.

It’s a huge chunk of a book at 400 pages, but I found these whizzed past quite fast because you can absorbed into the book very quickly. It begins with a look into the past at Caitlin’s mother Katie and how she was born. I was a bit surprised by this because I expected the action to begin with the 3 sisters quite quickly so it was nice for the author to take a different route. The book moves through a few time periods throughout the book so we can see the development of these characters throughout their lives from young teenagers to adult women working with the Melville company. Therefore, I was able to develop feelings for them and actually care about what happened to them.

Hyland creates the wonderful world of Melville really well, but doesn’t dwell too much on the shop side of things, rather choosing to focus on behind-the-scenes of the company and the personal life of the 3 girls.Caitlin seems to be the main character of the 3 as it is her feelings we encounter first of all, and she is the one that the sympathy of the reader is aimed at. As the book progresses, it moves onto a deeper look at the lives of Elizabeth and Amber, but I still found myself what Caitlin was up to! I liked how different the 3 sisters were, it made for 3 very different stories, and the way they weaved together towards the end was perfect.

Hyland’s writing is very easy to read, and progresses the story very well. She writes in the third person which is the most logical writing style due to the amount of main characters used. This allows Hyland to jump backwards and forwards between characters easily, and gives an overall cohesion to the book. This book is definitely a bonkbuster – there’s sex, drugs and a whole lot more besides, but I found it was done in a very tasteful way and wasn’t out of place in the book at all. The sex scenes were well written, and I didn’t cringe at them as I sometimes do so well done to Tara for writing these scenes well. The scenes with Amber were at times a tad awkward to read because of what is hinted at, but this is acceptable because of the plot around it, it doesn’t feel too gratuitous or out of place.

If you are fans of the Bagshawe sisters, Jo Rees or any of the other “bonkbuster” authors out there, then you’ll love Tara Hyland’s debut. It’s story sucks you in and keeps you hooked until the last page, and even then you’re not sure everything is going work out okay for the Melville family. There are characters to love and hate, storylines that you will love and it travels the globe too so there’s plenty in here to keep you going. It’s gorgeous cover will jump out at you and rightly so, it’s a superb read that I loved. Yes, it is long but don’t let that put you off, it needs each of those pages to make the story. I really enjoyed reading this book, and I think Tara Hyland will have a great career ahead of her if this book is anything to go by!(less)

Shelves: fluff

Not great literature, but this was a nice little fairytale, good for beach reading or on the plane. Hyland's main strength is dialogue, otherwise the book is a straight narrative, a little predictable, although she has a nice eye for details. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Hyland works either designing department store window displays or for a fashion magazine. She has a nice appreciation for her subject, and while I've labeled this book as fluff, it's a nice bit of fluff.

This was a surprisingly great read, I expected more of a gossip teen story based on the cover, but it was not that at all. It was focused on three daughters of fortune and as the story started when the girls were in their teens it quickly progressed past teen drama, and into the life lessons that the girls learn in their twenties and thirties. The situations these girls go through are deep, dark and very messed up. But the author nicely wraps up the story with a happy ending and I was not disap...more

Bland and predictable (especially towards the end) but an enjoyable read during a rainy day curled up in bed.

While the characters are rather well developed, with their personal demons - which made them relatable and allowed readers to empathize with them - everything seemed to come all too easily to the Melvilles.

Overall, it did not supply the drama the excerpt implied.

However, it reminded me of a book about a milliner named Violet. I cannot, for the life of me, remember the title of the book...more

I am currently reading this book and I just can't put it down. There are many subjects covered in this book so far. It deals with family issues like divorce of parents, new step sisters. Also, loss of someone you truly love and care about like your mother. The struggle to abandon the previous life style to enter in a new, progressive, and truly different society. Once I got into this book, I really enjoyed it. Granted, some of the plot points are very soap-opera-ish, but engrossing for the same reasons anyways. My main complaint was the overbearing brow beating the writer gave for drugs, sex and alcohol. None of these people are recreational hedonists, because in this novel, you either go hardcore, or go home (and lord your moral superiority over everyone else).

It has been a long time since I have read such a great book about a prominent dynasty and their feuds.

Whilst based mainly around the three daughters of William Melville, head of the Melville exclusive fashion label, each sister adds another character or two to the story.

Sex, Drugs and Money combine to make a good 'Bonkbuster'.

All for a debut novel - can't wait to read more!

First 128 pages horribly nauseating but still good. After that...not so much. Caitlin became someone that I didn't like or care about once she turned 18. Elizabeth and Amber were always characters that I didn't like. I really hated Amber. The kids that Elizabeth and Caitlin went to school with were disgusting.
I really loathed how William dumped Katie.

This book was really interesting. It had a multi-layered plot with lots of characters that are loved and hated at different times. Its a complex three generational family saga based around ownership of an English luxury apparel store with some politics, drugs and infidelity thrown in to keep things interesting. There were a couple situations with her two daughters where I actually stopped and wondered, "Where'd mom go?" Toward the end there's some throwaway line mentioning her, but no explanation as to where she'd been the whole time.

LOVED it!! You get to live the lives of sisters who have nothing in common and then the author expertly intertwines their stories so you see what happens to them over the course of many years. I know it was good because I was devastated when it ended and still look up the author's name to see if a sequel will come out.

This wasn't what I was expecting at all - I wanted something more sophisticated but by the time I was 3/4 through I realised it had the real feeling of a modern day Danielle Steele family saga. I can see the 'made for TV' adaptation already. It was superficial - all about the sex. But entertaining.

Shelves: chick-lit

picked up this book by accident... was looking for a daughter of fortune by allende.
though it looks like a trashy romance novel, it is not.
pick this book up when you are heading to the beach and have a couple of days. it's a fast read and the characters are dynamic.

Este livro foi uma agradável surpresa. Sempre quis lê-lo mas por outro lado tinha receio que tivesse muita palha, por ser um livro grande. Curiosamente este livro não é nada aborrecido, apesar de ter muitas histórias que se interligam num romance complexo sobre a família Melville.

A family saga that follows the story of three sisters involved in the family business that is a luxury store. 400 pages, yet it didn't feel like it and I got through it with speed as I was drawn in. Easy to read and definitely a good summer read without too much work.

Just a basic beach read with not much plot or any substance. Very predictable. Able to finish in a few hours. Nothing memorable. But if you want something quick in the "light" fashion world genre, dealing with old money in trouble, this is worthe a glance.

When I first started reading this I thought Oh no, I've picked up a 'trashy' novel, but I'm glad I stuck with it as I actually really enjoyed it! Lots of glitz and glamour, love and betrayal, sibling rivalry and a bit of naughtiness thrown in here and there - all made for a good read if you don't take it too seriously.
