I taught this book with my 8th graders for the first time, and it corresponded with the social studies unit on the American Revolution. I thought that overall the book is well-written. The first third of the book is slow, but the action and conflicts do pick up as one gets towards the middle of the novel. The story focuses on the experiences of a colonial boy (Daniel) and his friend Coshmoo, a Delaware Indian. The revolution puts their friendship to the test, and each is engulfed by the ...more

In the time just preceding the Revolutionary War:

Coshmoo and Daniel have been best friends most of their lives. Daniel's family treats the Delawares with respect and Coshmoo's mother, Queen Esther, doctors them when needed. Both groups reside peacefully on the banks of the Susquehanna River. Delaware were not part of the Illinois Confederacy, but they adhered to the same ordinances. Alas, all good things come to an end......

Dan has an Uncle who comes to live with them after his family was murder

That bugged me as I would have loved to find that this book could have been a great choice if written properly but d

An eloquently written tale of the Native American experience during the American Revolution. The Delaware Indians along the Susquehanna are pressured to choose sides during the war, but many are fully aware of, and haunted by, the likelihood of losing their land regardless of which side wins. One of the Indians and his American friend pursue a quixotic quest for a tree that will restore peace.

Quite an interesting tale, and the author does a great job with creating an atmosphere of anxiety that a

I read this in elementary school and loved it. I frantically racked my brain recently to try and figure out what book it was that I read so long ago. It's a great adventure/friendship kind of book.
