The story is about a family living in Poland at the beginning of WWII. It follows their lives as the Germans invade their homeland and how they struggled to survive as a family in the years that followed. Other than the Diary of Anne Frank this is the only other book that I have read that looks at how the personal lives of one family were affected by the atrocities of war. I enjoyed the book but felt the terrible pain of these people as I read.
