I was introduced to the work of Author Ronald Malfi with his “Floating Staircase,” a novel of literary horror and familial entanglement, an excellent story. “Snow” is more “straight horror,” a novel which might edge on science fiction, but is primarily horror, and very horrifying indeed. The implacable nature and extent of the threat to our protagonists and to the townspeople of Woodson kept me awake, determined to finish the novel so I could actually sleep.

Snow: a natural occurrence in many lo...more

Ronald Malfi's debut novel for Leisure Horror is an interesting and tautly written horror story. While some might label this as an atypical "people cut off from the world in a small town by some imaginable horror" I actually liked it for what it was...and the main characters in this novel which made it all the more intriguing. Todd Curry, a lawyer trying to make a cross-coutry flight to see his son for Christmas, gets stranded with dozens of other passengers...and a few of them decided to band t...more

I want to first thank Leisure Books for bringing Ronald Malfi to their company. Guys like Malfi, Gord Rollo, Wrath James White, and Jeff Strand are the new generation of horror writers that deserve to be read by the masses. Next, I want to thank author Ronald Malfi for crafting a near perfect tale of horror. He has infused this original novel with every element I look for in a great horror story; a realistic setup dripping with thick, creepy atmosphere, an extremely dangerous antagonist, interes...more

So, one of the blurbs on Tom McCarthy's Remainder claims it's a great work of existential horror, while on Malfi's Snow praise rings about its classical horror accomplishments. Snow's monster fiction falls squarely in the realist prose-stylings of a particular genre camp (I think--but, wait--what's that mean again?), while Remainder is the shape of the new novel, blasting apart the old realist conventions (if you buy Zadie Smith, and she makes a damn good case).

So I thought it'd be cool to read...more

This was a pretty good horror story by Malfi. It's a monster type of story that deals with some weird beings that come out of the snow and take over people like in Invasion of the Body Snatchers. It follows the story of a couple of people who happen to break down in their car while traveling in the snow and then happen upon a town in crisis. It was a fun read it had a zombie story combined with Invasion of the Body Snatchers vibe to it. One missed chance I thought was the protagonist (Todd) was...more

Having grown up in snowy North Ontario - and having lived through the three foot plus snowfall-in-a-day of White Juan here in Halifax - I have a healthy respect for the snow.

I know have an equally healthy respect for the writing of Ronald Malfi.

I have read Malfi's work before with his book THE FALL OF NEVER (Raw Dog Screaming Press), and was very impressed by his clean no-nonsense approach to writing. It is great to see Malfi getting out into the mass-market.

SNOW utilizes a basic horror trope. A...more

It's been a long time since I read a good, old-fashioned monster book, and even longer since I've read one that's as really creepy as Snow. With this book, Malfi takes a familiar premise, the isolated small town, combines it with several others, and brings up something new, bleak, and pretty damned scary. And it's set against the delightful backdrop of a Norman Rockwell painting of a Christmas village.

Snow begins in an airport, where Todd Curry is hoping his flight to see his son for Christmas h...more

Do you like the isolated and abondoned, yet surrounded feeling of a zombie story? The tense paranoia of a body snatcher tale, when you don't know who's human? What about monsters you haven't seen before? That describes Snow: four strangers stumbling into a town after a car crash during a blizzard, finding the place under the assault of a type of ghostly monster that can turn people into zombies, or present a whole different kind of danger when outside the body.

The writing is solid, and the chara...more

An excellent fast-paced story about an accidental group of travellers who end up stranded in a small town in Iowa during a snowstorm. Little do they know that the town happens to be under invasion by something in the snow. It's all very straightforward action from the get-go, with brisk writing and economical characterisation that result in a whirlwind of a novel. The story name-drops H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds, and the approach is indeed somewhat similar, with a limited perspective and c...more

I don’t consider myself a wimp, and I’ve both read and watched more horror stories than I can remember, but I had nightmares after reading Snow. Perhaps it’s because I’ve had first-hand knowledge of those sudden Mid-Western blizzards which can blow up without warning and strand a motorist in the middle of nowhere, or perhaps it’s that fear of something like this story happening, and of meeting some deadly entity while helpless and isolated. Whatever the reason, Snow is a good read, and a scary r...more

A good, solid horror book, with a few caveats. Reminiscent of Koontz's Phantoms for me, the story deals with trapped travelers being hunted by ethereal beasts hiding in a snow storm. They become solid just long enough to kill and inhabit human bodies. Creepy, a bit gory, with fairly cookie cutter characters that nonetheless remain interesting.

Unfortunately it appears Malfi has no idea what a gun looks like or how it works. With multiple descriptions that completely throw the reader out of the s...more

This was the first novel that I have read by Ronald Malfi. For the most part, I was impressed with his writing. This was a good book, no question. I thought that the opening sequence was amazing and did a great job of drawing in the reader. The middle section falters a bit and fails to match the great opening. The ending is good. This novel felt like a bit of a pastiche, like Malfi was threading together many different modern horror cliches and adding a little bit of his own new flavor to the mi...more

I like Ronald Malfi's, Snow to a certain extent, however, there were a lot of things about his writing that annoyed me close to the point that I didn't want to continue reading his novel. Malfi falls into a repetitive nature throughout the book and will often fall back onto words, descriptions, and style techniques that become trite and noticeable. While I thought the story was good and the monsters interesting, I was unable to find myself immersed with the story for too long because of the cons...more

It started out great, "snow-monsters" taking over a small town, Night of the Living Dead meets the Body Snatchers, very horror, very classic. And yeah, that is where my issues with "Snow" start.
The "classic" feel made this story get more and more bland, all seen and done before. This classic factor turned the not so bad idea of the evil from the snow into something rather unoriginal, with mediocre characters that have their fair share of sexism, undeserving heroism and foreseeable death-ism. We...more

Quick read and i really got right into it... took me only two sittings to get through the whole book... and it does help that we just had a winter storm so snow and ice is everywhere... really sets the mood for the book. There was some repetition in the book that i thought could have been caught out but then going back i realized it was merely same information being relayed to different PoV characters... other than that minor issue its smooth sailing.

Brief Synopsis: a huge storm hits the midwest...more

Ronald Malfi, Snow (Leisure, 2010)

I had Snow, Malfi's most recent novel, on my list of stuff to read in 2011. Then I found a copy at a library book sale, in good enough shape for me, but not for the library. (It had suffered some water damage.) Considering this providence, I bought it for a quarter, took it home, and then tried to resist reading it until 2011. As I'm writing this on October 1, 2010, you can see how well that worked out. I've been hearing Malfi's name around and about for a few y...more

I belong to the Leisure horror book club so this was sent to me automatically, but even if it wasn't I would still snatch this if I saw it in a book store. I love these kinds of tales; woods, snow, strange things happening, possible ghosts/monsters/something wicked roaming around, people acting strange, yum! Malfi created a fun and entertaining story that is realistic enough to make the reader worry about the characters that are believable even if most of them don't get to witness any happy endi...more

Forget abominable snowmen, bring on snow monsters! I got the feeling the author has been or is from the midwest where it snows like a mother. The main character, Todd, has his flight canceled and co-rents a car with another stranded passenger. Todd wants to get to his son for Christmas and the only way is to drive through a brutal blizzard. Alas, they don't make it, stopping by a small, isolated town under siege by...well, read this and find out.

This is the third story by Malfi I've read and he...more

Wow, this is the best monster book I've read since Brian Keene's 'Ghoul'. Love the fact that a small town is blanketed by creatures living in the snow. The pacing is spot on. Malfi manages to write a story with breakneck speed while still creating robust characters that you live and die with along the way. The monsters here are a perfect blend of creepy, gory and malicious. This is a must read for any horror fans!

Really great read, made me feel chilly even on a warm-ish summer day! Plenty of tense moments ('shoot it! Set it on fire! Run!!') and an enemy that's never quite defined, but terrifying nonetheless. Very good characters - I was disappointed when some of them didn't make it, and pleased when others did, proof they were realistic enough, easy to envisage and relate to. Will certainly seek out more of Malfi's work.

I really enjoyed the book. It was the first novel I've read by this author. It had a strong story and characters you love to hate. It kept the tension going and kept you reading. I'm not sure if it was intentional or not, but, nearly at the end of the story there seemed to be a nod to HP Lovecraft in terms of where the creatures came from.

Really good book, I'd probably maybe even give it five stars had I not just read the absolutely amazing Dweller or had I been reading it during a snowstorm. I thought the writing was very "cinematic" as in I could see this book in my head playing out like a movie, I think this book would make a great movie if done right. I recommend this one.

I must have absolutely no attention span anymore. Lately every book I read has not held my interest and Snow is no exception. I gave up on page 81 because I was bored. I'm sorry but 80 pages into a horror novel something scary should have happened!

great book!!! wish it had been longer because i was hooked so much i finished it quicker than i usually do on a normal basis. freaked me out, but i loved it.

An interesting idea but the story drags on and the characters are too plain. I found myself wishing the book would end about half way through.

Interesting, easy reading, mostly horror somewhat sci-fi story. I did enjoy the story not creepy enough to give 5 stars.

This book kind of reminds me of John Saul -- whose books I just love! Its a very good story and fast paced. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
