the last few chapters were exceptional. I lived how she showed reconstruction and a lost war as a path for female social independence, questioning men, and seeing their sacred duty to protect the home as necessitating entrance into the political realm.

Edwards' book is not new, but remains a very good introduction to the subject of all classes of Southern women before, during, and after the Civil War.
