This is the first Philip Atlee novel I’ve read, even though it’s #20 in the Joe Gall series. Atlee shows in the first few chapters that he’s a very good writer, but when it comes to plot and action this book actually left me wondering if he’s best suited to this genre. It takes a long time for the plot of “The Black Venus Contract” to unfold and I don’t think Atlee makes the most of his action scenes. In chapter nine, for example, there is a throwaway shootout sequence that is less than a page ...more
