Hits the melancholically romantic wavelength in the spectrum of Chekhov’s peculiar short stories. In this it echoes Дом c Мезонином from a couple of years before. However, the story of doctor Startsev features a pendulum of injustice that shifts the reader’s perspective of which character they should feel compassion for. Does sincere regret compensate for years of anguish caused by denied love? What if the pendulum swings again with the arrogance of denied forgiveness? Or perhaps we can take a f ...more

Possibly my favourite short story now. This one has it all: reassessments of people over time, whose initial glamourful displays are finally discovered as vain habits, the dreariness of life by habit and schedule, a feverish love that would have made a vain marriage, the death of intellectual life with a prejudiced country population, and with all that the degradation of one's life, turning a cultivated man into a fat, greedy, tempered machine of habit. This story accomplishes so much, and ...more

This one is my favorite of his short stories right now. The family was just ridiculous, and they were even like able in the beginning. But I could totally see myself in the doctors position, and saw them gradually becoming more appallingly annoying. Great fun.

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was born in the small seaport of Taganrog, southern Russia, the son of a grocer. Chekhov's grandfather was a serf, who had bought his own freedom and that of his three sons in 1841. He also taught himself to read and write. Yevgenia Morozova, Chekhov's mother, was the daughter of a cloth merchant.

"When I think back on my childhood," Chekhov recalled, "it all seems quite glo
