It's a terribly cute little story about a little guy trying to go through his day doing everything by himself. The illustrations are funny and cute. You have the added bonus of having the child reading along find the mouse in most of the illustrations. On my color Nook, you can touch the pictures and the word of the item touched will pop up with audio of the word being said. The mouse hunt is also by touch and tallied for you; the book tells you how well you did at the end in finding them al...more
Little Critter is proving that he can do things like brush his fur, brush his teeth, ride his tricycle and put himself to bed all by himself. This is a great book with a character is very determined to prove that he can do things without any help. This shows how children are when they reach the age where they want their own independence. The age appropriate would be kindergarten where the child is now learning how to do multiple things like writing their names, reading and dressing themselv...more
I didn't want to rate every Mercer Mayer Little Critters books so I thought I'd mark just one of the favorites. I admit that these books weren't on my top ten shelf despite the illustrations but I gave them a 4 star rating not because of my personal feelings but because of the boy's love for them. These books are in high rotation at our house. The boys often repeat the stories to themselves, look at the illustrations, and reference the stories during the day. Who can complain about a book that h...more
Next to "Where the Wild Things Are," the Mercer Mayer Little Critter books were my son's favorite bedtime reading when he was little. I probably read this one and other Mayer books to him a hundred times. Personally, these were also my favorites to read to him. I'm going to include reviews on those that I particularly remember.
This is a book about Little Critter's independence, although it all happens in a very funny way.

Mayer(1983) tells a story about a Little Critter that can do things throughout the day by himself to help his parents out but there is one thing he can’t do. He can’t go to sleep without a story begin read to him. I would use this in my classroom. It would help me teach my children the things they can do to help their parents out as they get a little older and are able to do a few things around the house.
I have a collection of Mercer Mayer books because my daughter wanted me to read them to her and when she was learning to read Mayer was one of her favorites. All By Myself is text to self for children at a young age being able to comb their own hair and put on their own clothes. The words are readable for all emergent readers.
This is a good book for children of all ages. It would be a good way to begin discussion on accepting responsibility and why children should listen to adults. Although the critter thinks he has everything under control "all by myself" it is apparent that he doesn't.
WHO didn't love, love, love Little Critter!? I was obsessed with these, but I really remember this one. He tries to be a "big boy" and do things for himself, and because he's little, he messes it all up. Classic kid's book. Loved it. Read it 300 times, i'm sure.
I don't think I even really cared for the books. They were good, but juvenile, obviously. Which I thought while I was a juvenile. They were quick reads and I tended to get bored easily so I read them out of necessity. It's a cute story, though.
This is a good book for showing kids that it's ok to be independent while also asking for help if they need to. As we grow older we will be able to do things by ourselves but also we still need to depend on others when we need help.
Little todger doesn't really know what he can and can't do, but the urge to be independent is good. And he knows that he likes a story before bed. I like this character, we have other books about him.
Encourages young children that they can do it all by themselves! This is what I instill in my niece and nephew, especially when they say, "I Can't" I say, "Yes, you can!"
I like this book quite a bit. The pictures and words very definitely form a part of the backbone that is my life. Mercer Mayer certainly has had a substantial impact.

Good book for pre school and kindergarten. This book shows you how you can start to do things on your own, getting dressed, tieing your shoe etc.

Little Critter can do almost everything by himself, but even big boys need their mommy to read them story at night.
Android app has a fun "find the mouse" feature.

I love little critter books. E was able to read most of this one by herself
Carl loves this! "Let's read it again!"
I've bought a number of Little Critter books for my nieces, because they really like them.
And anyway, they're short, they're funny, they're topical, and they're cheap.
In this one, Little Critter details all the things he can do "by himself". Of course, the illustrations give the lie to his words - sure he can pour his own juice, but he doesn't say that he spills, that sort of thing.

This book is good for K-1st because it talks about learning to do things on your own. It teaches them that though they want to do everything on their own there are still some things you need help with and thats okay. The things discussed in this book are simple things that students of this age are trying to do on their own so they can relate to it. I would use this book at the beginning of the year to help them understand that they will begin to learn to do things on their own.
I don't even need to say anything.
This book really captures toddlers and preschoolers well. Critter does all sorts of things by himself. He boasts about all of them, even though they are not all done exactly right. Like most of the critter books we've read, there is lots to look at and talk about that young children are familiar with.
All the things the little monster can almost do by himself... except read himself a bed time story.
This is another Little Critter story "I can do it all by myself" story. This can be especially good for children that are 4 or 5 because it is things that they begin doing and things they can conncet with. It wouldn't be appropriate for older kids because they wouldn't be able to relate and could get bored.
a cute story with a cute idea, using the stories of his daily life to teach children.

This was the first one of the author's books that I had read to my children. I think they were about 1-2 when we started reading these. I wanted to show them that they COULD do things for themselves. I thought that we had read all of MM's book but now, I see that there are so many more.
Great book for ages 2-5 learning to do things "all by themselves". Cute little creatures are hidden on each page. Little ones love the simple story line, and adults love the underlying humor of the situations.

a very cute book about how little critter is growing up and can stuff by himself. it shows that no matter how much you can do alone, you still may need help with some stuff.
I keep waiting for me to read this to Gaby one night and her to decide "I can do all those things for myself, too!" No such luck so far, but a nice little children's book.

I began illustrating books in 1966. Since that time I have published over 300 books. Most of my books are about things that happened to me when I was a little kid. Now I'm a big kid and I write about things that happen now, especially with my own children. They always remind me of what it was like.
