Rigged is definitely not as good as Taking Down the House.

The story is slow in general and really drags more often than not. The first 200 pages (of fewer than 300) were slow and boring, but just interesting enough to keep me reading. I'm not sure that I would have if I weren't so interested in business.

The prose didn't flow very well, either, making me wonder if Mezrich just isn't a great writer.

My last complaint is that the Jasmine storyline wasn't buttoned up very we...more

The oil exchange is a fascinating topic I knew nothing about, but that didn't seem to matter. The entertainment value that Mezrich puts into his books is what makes them...even though the ending of this one was a little ho hum. This book tells the rags to riches story of a bunch of guys from Queens & Brooklyn who make it big trading oil on the Merc Exchange in NYC, specifically following main character David Russo, a guy in his early 20's who helps develop an oil exchange in Dubai by seducin...more

Overall, an interesting read about the typical Mezrich high-roller lifestyle. Didn't really know anything about the NYMEX so it was neat to catch a glimpse of how it all works. However, I would have like a more complete description of the exchange process. Unfortunately, some of the big players in the book at not very well developed, especially the "bad guy" Gallo. Most interesting to me was the descriptions of Dubai, sounds like an amazing place.

Mezrich says in the afterward that this was the best book he's written. I can't say that I agree. You root for the main character to succeed, but the guy he's fighting on the board of the merc is not a very intriguing villain (unlike the Japanese mafia in 'Ugly Americans'), and the 'plot' (remember, this is non-fiction) is just not that interesting compared to his other works. A bit disappointing.

The book is more promise than delivery. Mezrich writes in an interesting style, but at bottom, I don't really believe what the protagonist accomplished actually will change the world. On the other hand, all things Dubai really are pretty fascinating, so the book wasn't all bad, either.

The author provides an absorbing and at times enjoyable glimpse at the high intensity and very lucrative subculture of commodities traders. The character development is sketchy and the author tends at times to resort needlessly to "street talk" in his narrative. The end almost suggests a screenplay setting up a sequel.

This author is awesome. I love everything he does, terrific non-fiction. Read this in 4 days. Very interesting and I do not even like anything having to do with financial trading, or oil. But that is what this is about bringing an exchange to the country of Dubai. True story, with names changed.

Very engaging exploits of Dave Russo, an HBS graduate, and his role in getting NYMEX to start an oil exchange in Dubai.

Not a lot of insights into the workings of the NYMEX, but more of a story about a driven Brooklyn Italian American and how he overcame long odds to get the project approved.

Very fast read. I enjoyed learning a little bit about Dubai and the massive growth that is happening. Interesting to note the reluctance to move from old school to new tech by some and the advocacy of others. If you liked Bringing Down the House, you'll like this. Can be read in about 3 hours.

I read this book cover to cover in one shot! Yet another enjoyable book by Ben Mezrich. It is engaging from the first page, and provides some interesting insights into the world of the New York Mercantile Exchange. Makes you look at the current oil price hikes with new eyes!

Fast and fun, Mizrich does it again. The kind of shit this guy pulls off makes me think of some of the students at Davis High. Some people are simply on a different level intellectually. Different level? Different planet.

This book is focused on the inner workings of the commodities exchange in New York. It is a pretty interesting read, and very quick! Very good for those working in FS or interested in the corrupt nature of America.

This book dissapointed me, as I thought it would be about how the price of oil gets rigged. Instead it was only a moderately interesting account of how an oil exchange was started in Dubai.

Ben is an author I have enjoyed through 2 blackjack books and an ugly American. But this book lacks the precision and the detail that I have recently learned to expect.

In keeping with Ben's tradition of entertaining his readers and teaching them about an industry that they probably know nothing about, this was a really fun read.

Not much happens and - at the end - you're left a little deflated with a climax that didn't do the previous, enthralling tale of ultra-decadence justice.

It's ok but after 5 chapters, I pretty much know exactly what's going to happen. I'm not sure I'll finish this one. I'd rather see the movie.
