Survivor In Death (In Death #20)
by
J.D. Robb
The only thing that kept young Nixie Swisher from suffering the same fate as her parents, brother, housekeeper, and young sleepover companion was the impulsive nine-year-old's desire for an illicit orange fizzy at 2 a.m. Taking the bereft girl under her wing, Eve is determined to make sure the killers don't get the chance to finish their lethal job. From the first, however...more

This is the 20th book in the In Death series.

This book is called Survivor in Death by J. D. Robb. This book is about murder as many of J. D. Robb's books are. The book's main character is Lieutenant Eve Dallas and she works in the NYPSD's homicide division. Eve has a very strong personality and is a very caring person. Eve cares about her victims even if the victims are dead. It is refreshing to read about a cop who cares about her job more than her own safety and to know that she'll stop at nothing to bring those guilty of murder to justi...more
Book #59 of 2011
I've taken quite a break from the "In Death" series, so there were a couple of references that I'd forgotten about. But then again, this is how many books into the series? (no seriously, how many? Oh - I see. #20.) So that's not all that surprising.
What I found interesting about this particular book was the introduction of a child into Eve and Roarke and Summerset's lives, even if only temporarily. Roarke has made not secret of the fact that...more

A book in the Eve Dallas mystery series, this is about a ruthless set of killers, very professional, very military-like, possessing the latest gadgets to help them infiltrate a home and kill everyone in it. Only problem is that they missed the daughter. Her sleepover friend was mistaken for her and the little girl survived. Now they are trying to tie up loose ends and Lt. Eve Dallas must do everything she can to protect the girl and bring her family's killers to justice.
Eve will never win awards for mother of the year, but she will always keep her promises. Story is about two men and a woman going around slaughtering innocent people because he lost custody of his children in a nasty custody battle. Eve catching the case after a nine year old witnesses two men entering her home in the middle of the night and killing her parents, brother, best friend and the maid. Eve takes the little girl into protective custody and hides her in Roarke's house. Eve and Roarke b...more
This is one of the more difficult "in Death" books to read, at least for me, since it includes child murder, but Ms. Roberts does her usual fantastic job of getting the readers on the side of the victims. You run the full gamut of grief, regret, sorrow, and end with hatred of the perpetrators for the evil they strew around. Eve is left to deal with the results of their evil and does her usual amazing job of collecting evidence and honing in on the bad guys. You will fall in love wit...more
I call this, 'The One With The Kid'. When I first started reading the In Death series I was hopelessly behind. As a result, this was the newest book in the series at the time (at the time of writing this, I am reading In Death 28).
For some reason I was desperately afraid the first time around that they were going to use this book to give Dallas a kid. Fortunately, no such thing occurs and only then do I remember that In Death is very much like my favourite Procedural shows on tv. It might look ...more

This has shot to the top of my list as my favourite Eve Dallas book so far. Normally, I'm crazy about Eve's interactions with Roarke or Peabody, which often have me chuckling and re-reading those scenes several times because they're just so funny. Robb/Roberts has a knack for writing characterisations that really round off each character and make them completely human and real - flaws and all (and not too perfect).

I'm starting not to comment on these books anymore because I keep saying the same things. I love the series. I particularly love the interactions between and growth of the continuing characters, including the maturation of the relationship between Eve and Roarke. All things I've said before.
I wanted to speak to one point that seems to be bothering some of the other reviewers, Eve's interaction with the surviving child in this story. To me it rang very real. Eve isn't ready for a child...more

I thought Survivor in Death was just OK. There were moments when I laughed out loud and got misty-eyed, but I felt somewhat dissatisfied with the story as a whole. Eve seemed very cold to me. I understand due to her childhood, she'd have a hard time dealing with a kid victim. At times though, she seemed a bit heartless and that not the Eve I've come to learn. The normal camaraderie between everyone didn't feel as genuine this time. I didn't really care for the mystery eithe...more

I'm not reading these in order, so sometimes I find a story about characters who are mentioned in later books, but that's okay, so far it hasn't detracted from any of the books. Up to now, I would say that this is one of the best In Death books I've read, the story of how Nixie Swisher survives the assassination of her family, and how Dallas hunts down and finds the killers is a rewarding read. Plus, there's the fun bits about how she portrays her future New York, love the autochef, maxibuses,...more
I had forgotten how much I enjoyed a good not too gory crime novel, but this one reminded me! I'd love to read more of this series...it had just the right amount of detail, not too much jargon, interesting characters, and a great story to boot!

Since I'm half-way through the next book, I should write something down about this one. *g*
The murder mystery involves an entire family that gets killed in their own beds, with the exception of the nine year old daughter who was sneaking a soda in the middle of the night. Nixie was missed by the methodical and professional murderers, because her friend was over for a sleepover, so a nine year old was found in her bed, just not the right nine year old.

Another rollicking adventure. The bad guys were a bit 2-dimensional, but really - I don't read the books for the bad guys, I read them for the thrill of the chase, the occasional awkward social interaction, and the inevitable butt-kicking (literal or figurative).
Dallas' history is (as usual) a part of the storyline; it's pretty interesting to read in each book how she continues to deal with the demons of her past. This book refers to some characters who have obviously been intro...more

I have to admit that I have enjoyed the last two or three installments more than the others because we have been given more insight into Eve's background. Nixie's story seemed to parallel Eve's and you could feel the toll it took on our heroine to deal with all the issues surrounding Nixie's surviving. It warmed my heart to hear Roarke express a desire to have a family with Eve (who we know has no interest in a little alien being inside her lol). Whil...more

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SERIES
Another great book in In Death series. Not the best one, I'm afraid.
Nixie, the only survivor of a multiple homicide wasn't the character I was expecting. I didn't really create a bond with her.
She only got in the way. If she was suspicious of strangers how come only hours later, she would get up and intrude Roarke's work?
I didn't really liked the girl and Eve and Roarke are not yet prepared to be parents. They don't got what it takes. It doesn't mean that in the future they ...more

Survivor In Death is one of the most intense and terrifying installment in the series thus far. In this book, nine year old Nixie Swisher is the sole survivor in death after her mother, father, brother, her best friend and the family domesticate are murdered in their beds while they sleep, practically right before her eyes. The only reason Nixie was spared is because she snuck out of bed in the middle of night for a soda and then hid when she figured out there were intruders in her home. The mur...more
Another good Roarke & Eve story with Eve kicking butt better than ever. Story of 9 yr old Nixie who witnesses the death of her parents, brother, best friend and housekeeper and Eve takes the little girl into their home for protective custody. Nixie appreciates Eve's frankness with her & the fact that she keeps her promises. Some of the bad guys from Cassandra reappear in this one. The question is, will Eve & Roarke start thinking about children now?

Great story, but the futuristic, sci-fi angle was lost on me. I see that a lot; strange devices whose purpose is unclear. This story is a great police procedural with an interesting angle of non-parents coping with a child's trauma. That it takes place in 2036 or somewhen and has a few unfamiliar toys and so forth seemed like wasted effort. But if you like murder, mystery and police-work, it's all here.
I have loved every book in this series but this one was a little intense for me. Perhaps it is because I'm a mother and the violence is geared toward children, but it just seemed that the violence was more extreme. For the first time reading any of these books I welled up with tears - AND in more than one scene! As usual, Roberts does a great job building Dallas' case and in building the suspense - just a word of warning that this is not the "easy mystery" that I find others in the ...more
Not Eve's best moments in this one. Still love the series and still very good. But Eve's maternal instincts certainly need a bit of work.
It's hard to remember that I'd never read any of these before about seven months ago. Now the first 20 (and a between the numbers and a few short stories) have gone by and I can't get enough Eve and Roarke. That should say something right there.

Lieutentant Eve Dallas is on the case of the Swisher family who has been murdered. Set in 2060, the language was hard to decipher at first. Will Dallas be able to find the murderers as promised to Nixie, the 9 year old that survived the attacks or is it all police talk?
Pretty good book, hard to understand the "futuristic" language. The best was the last 100 pages.

Book was Ok, not as good as some are. Not much Mavis in this one or other personal stuff about the characters we know and love. So tired about hearing of Eve killing her dad in that motel room. We know it. Some of the cool futuristic details I love were missing from this one too. Motive for murders was a bit thin and not much explanation given.
Ok, I've read several in this very, very long series now. The net result is that I am developing a deep respect for the talents of Nora Roberts. Each story is told with an affection for her characters and craft. The stories don't leave me feeling that it is the same story just changed up a bit. And the sheer amount of writing is simply amazing.
Another one in this series worth reading. Totally different story to the others, this one involving a child as only survivor. The story did seem to drag a bit somewhere in the middle of the book but otherwise it as the usual composition of wit, sharp forensics and the occasional reminder to value life and your loved ones.
Roarke being vulnerable....awwww, that's so adorable.
But I wonder if the books are taking on more of the Nora Roberts' voice more than the J.D. Robb voice. And some of the dialogue feels rehashed--such as Morris talking about caring about this case. Spending longer between each book would probably be good for me.
