A collection of hilarious stories by outdoor humorist Patrick McManus. The author has published a whole series of such stories, many of which are based "loosely" on his experiences growing up in Sandpoint, Idaho. McManus is a former columnist for "Field & Stream" and "Outdoor Life" magazines. What is not well-known is that he is also a former professor of English at Eastern Washington University. His homespun style in these books might obscure the fact that only a m...more

My 14 yo son and I read this together. We're not hunters or avid campers or anything, but McManus has a way of defining jargon as he goes along so the constant stream of laughter isn't slowed down by confusion. Not a lot of wisdom here maybe, because many of the 'characters' are slightly stereotyped role-fillers (ie, the long-suffering wife, the friend who isn't quite as smart as the fish, etc.), but it's all friendly fun. Recommended to plenty of people who might not think they'll actually l...more

mcmanus is hilarious. nothing wrong w/laughter and you'll laugh lots reading the stories in his collections. first appearing in a major major major major magazine....dentists the world over have discovered that by having a copy, even old copies, in their waiting rooms, the customers forget where they're at and come back when scheduled. good reads, all!

I really like this writer. Hillarious stories from a boy/man's point of view. His best friend is "Wretch Sweeney". If you like the Red Green show you will like McManus. All about the crazy stuff boys do.

I really like Patrick McManus's books as well because they are short stories, but so funny. The way he looks at things dealing with outdoor sports is just great. Often from a kids perspective which I love.

Could not help but laugh when I read this book, unfortunately I was in the emergency room waiting area when I did. Very funny book.

Another McManus great! Loved this book growing up. All his books are compliations of short humorous stories.

Pat McManus' stories, read to me around the campfire during our yearly camping trip near Estacada, Oregon, almost always made me wet my pants laughing. Which is no fun while you're camping (since we did REAL camping, with no showers, just the river that was way too cold to bathe in.) In this particular McManus collection, "The Mountain Car" is my favorite - it chronicles Pat and his best friend, who purchase a beat-up car, which they love so much, they name after their favorite teacher...more

See my review of "A fine and Pleasant Misery" for a more comprehensive view of my feelings on Patrick McManus. Suffice it to say, I've had this book in my purse to read in doctor's office waiting rooms. However, I'll have to remove it because I laughed out loud so hard in the last waiting room that I'm not sure I can show my face in there again. Well, at least it was a pleasant wait.

I love Patrick McManus's books! They are laugh out loud funny! I guess because I love the outdoors and I always went exploring as a kid. I think his stories are just so funny! These stories are great for the car because they are all short stories. Of course with all of his books some stories are better than others but definitely a must read for outdoor enthusiasts.

I was expecting a story but each chapter is another short story. Some of them had me laughing pretty hard and others at least made me grin. Fast read and entertaining. Not my favorite type of book, it is more for a bathroom reader in my mind.

All of Patrick McManus books are great short stories for all ages. I read them to the girls when they were little and we would laugh so had that I could hardly read. A sports writer that has a great sense for humor! Great for all ages.
