This was probably the first book ABOUT comics that I ever read. The campus for the University of Pittsburgh branch in my town was across the street from my house, and the university library as a two minute walk from my back door. Back in the day, locals could borrow books from there with their public library card, and I found that they had numerous books on the history of the genre there that I took out constantly to pour over.

This is realley interesting, and I learned lot! World War Two was a key point in the development of superheros, but this goes back earlier than that in places. It is not an easy read in places, not like my usual fiction books. But I wanted a change. I always read comics and sometimes still do. But I didn't know anything about their history. The authoer goes over the development of Superman, Batman, The Shadow, The Spider, and lots of other characters I never knew existed! It is very cool stuff!...more
This is legendary artist Jim Steranko's History of Comics. This oversize book has lots of interesting examples from the Golden Age of comics. Highlights include full page examples of: Hal Foster's "Prince Valiant", Alex Raymond's "Flash Gordon" and Burne Hogarth's "Tarzan". Also, numerous Pulp and Golden Age covers throughout the book.
Great book that, along with the Jules Feiffer's THE GREAT COMIC BOOK HEROES, introduced me to and taught me about some of the characters and creators I had never known before. If you can find the Steranko books I highly recommend you grab them.

Kidding asside, this is a pretty good go-to book to find out things about the (pre?)-history of comic books, meaning the pulp era.
Though nowhere near complete, it's still a great "search" book.
My only qualm is that it's too darn big with pages matching the size of most newstand papers (think National Enquierer), and printed on cheap paper, meaning that everytime you consult it for information, you're risking damaging it... and believe me...more
