This book is very well written and an absolute pleasure to read. At the same time, it may be one of the most important and disturbing books I've read since Beloved or A Fine Balance. It's set in the future and really it's science fiction, but the gentile style of writing makes it seem like it was written in the past.

I can't say anymore without spoiling it. Just read it! Then recommend it to someone else.

This is one of the most beautiful modern novels I have read. Its only flaw is that it's a short book, I have reread it because it leaves me wanting more. I think it's also my favorite work of speculative fiction.

The speculation involves the creation and promotion of a drug that prevents women from having girl children. The long term result is economic collapse, and an increase in male violence. The protagonist is a shy entomologist, whose partner and the love of his life is a jour More...

An elegantly written dystopian piece. The author takes as his starting point the preference for male children in many cultures. Folk remedies for encouraging the birth of a male have always existed, and in this short novel Maloof imagines scientists successfully developing such a substance and distributiing it through these channels to avoid legal scrutiny. The substance is irreversible, permanently sterilising the man who ingests it from producing female children. This is initially welcomed in More...

More...

I remember reading this book for the first time when I was researching global warming and seeing the power of fiction to make real the underlying threats to humanity. Maalouf does what no amount of scaremongering can, he shows the human price of ignoring the effects of our behaviour on our planet, and he does it with beauty, precision and restraint.

Since then I've given the book to many scientists in different disciplines and most of them have been equally awed by this 'future pre More...

A very enjoyable read! Amin Maalouf mixed between his indepth style and documentation, but instead of writing about the past, the narrator is telling events in the future. The main question of the novel is what if there was a drug that ensures that the baby is a boy and not a girl? won't this suit the dream of many who see that bringing a girl in this world is shameful? And what if the demography of the countries changed due to the wordwide usage of this drug? As the southern hemisphere countrie More...

Maalouf, romanı 'Beatrice'den Sonra Birinci Yüzyıl'da Margaret Atwood'un 'The Handmaid Tale' adli distopyasinin tam da başladığı noktalara sürüklüyor bizi. Evet. Damizlik Kadın! Neden olmasın!?

I have enjoyed several other works by Maalouf.
This does not live up to his high standard.
I am disappointed.
It took a force of will to finish.
Nice phraseology, nice use of language, nice when it was over.

This is an excellent speculative novel of a future where human reproduction is fundamentally altered, far superior in conception (no pun intended) than the film 'Children of Men'.
Seriously, if you thought that film was at all interesting beyond its self-pitying liberal politics and Clive Owen's handsome mug, check out Malouf's book. I don't want to give away too much plot, but he very skillfully plays out a plausible premise to its disastrous conclusions, and by doing so sensitizes us to t More...

Mediocre. Maalouf toys with a somewhat interesting idea that would read as apocalyptic science fiction, were it not written in a realistic mode (and dealing with real issues, like gender discrimination and disparities between the global North and South). There's quite a bit of informative material here and there, and a few enjoyable moments. But otherwise the character development seemed too poor and sloppy for this to count as a good novel.

Imagine a world whereby only male children are born to women that voluntarily take a little pill. Now imagine an overwhelming majority of women worldwide take the pill for whatever reason and then find out that the effects are essentially permanent. Maalouf writes from the perspective of the father of one the most coveted items on the planet in this imaginary world: a daughter.

Superb book that describes the causes and aftermath of the collapse of civilization across the world. It's fiction but not too far from a reality that could come to pass. Definitely worth reading!
