Oddly to some, this still stands as my favorite Roald Dahl book. It's hard for me to pinpoint why, since it's my opinion and I hate examining my opinions too closely, but to take a swing at it:
It's one of the least zany of Dahl's books, which ultimately gives it staying power. With many of his other works, you get caught up in the wacky characters, situations, and goings ons and it's hard to take them as seriously once you get a little bit older and gain a little bit of sophistication. However,...more

My God! this book is lovely, this is what all parents must to read, they do not know how react towards thier childeren, and this book teach them how . . . i love it . . .

The movie with Jeremy Irons, his wife, Sinead Cusack, his son and his father-in-law is just as good as the book! Great for all ages.
YA. I got this book as a reward for participating in my library's summer reading program back when I was still short enough to read for cash and prizes. Ironically enough, I never read it. Sab instructed me to do so, and I finally dug it out and gave it a go.
This is a book about Danny and the very best father a boy could ever want. There's something a tad creepy about a boy who idolizes his father this much, but I'm not a boy living alone with his father in the English countryside in the 1970s,...more

In either year 2 or 3 (actually I think it happened both years) my class had a substitute teacher at the end of the year. She was amazing and I adored her. She would always read us stories which of course I loved. As well as this book she also read us Roald Dahls The Witches and The BFG.
Anyways I was totally enthralled with this story and the day she finished it I went home and was RAVING about it and either my brother or mother told me we had a copy of it somewhere that belonged to my brother b...more

My personal favorite RD book. I wanted to live in a cozy gypsy caravan like Danny.
This is the novel I taught to my IEP students for the first eight week Spring session of 2012. These are low-intermediate level students of English as a second language who are planning to attend UL once they pass the language proficiency exams.
I had never read this or any other works by this author before. It looked cute, so I was pleased to be teaching it.

Although I find the fact that Danny's father teaches Danny how to steal disturbing, I did enjoy this book for its great characterization, the emotions it evokes, and the playful tone typical of Roald Dahl's writing.
I would recommend this to children for two reasons. First, it is a great example of the kind of loving, intimate relationship a boy can share with his father, no matter what his family situation is like. This book would be especially effective for a child who does not have that kind...more

Danny deeply loves his father and the book describes the pleasant life they led, until William’s “deepest, darkest secret…” is revealed. William is a poacher of pheasants.

Danny the champion of the world by Roald Dahl
This is my favourite book from my childhood and upon recent re-reading of the pulsating Roald Dahl book it reminded me why I read it over and over again as a youth. It has all the elements of a classic book for 10-12 year olds, it is in someway realistic, involves a beautiful relationship and has you rooting for the hero all the way through without ever truly being sure the hero will conquer. The story revolves around Danny, the son of a mechanic wh...more

The book follows a young primary school child who tells his story of his life and his father's. The story mainly centres around the child's love for his father and how best to trap pheasants, while evading the aristocrat character who owns the woods where the birds live.

Danny the champion of the world by Roald Dahl is a very interesting book. The book is about a boy called Danny who is a very good kid, he doesn’t do bad things compared to other boys his age. He lives in a caravan with his dad, his mother dies when he was young. Danny loved his life and didn’t think anything could possibly go wrong, Him and his father have an amazing relationship and he sees his dad as an amazing person who could never do anything wrong. "Danny, the Champion of the World" is about a boy named Danny, he lives in a old gypsy station wagon ever since his mom died. Danny's dad is pretty poor so he works really hard for auto mobiles. But his dad was keeping a secret so important, he couldn't even tell Danny. Danny never knew what his dad did. Until now. When Danny was about nine, he woke in the middle of the night. He found that his dad was not in his bunk. He crept out of his and went to the workshop... He wasn't there either. He ca...more
This is one of the sweetest books in the entire world. Danny and his father live in a little gypsy caravan behind the filling station where they work. Danny's Mum died ages ago and it's just the two of them and they are very happy together.

Any time Roald Dahl came up in conversation over the past several years, at least one of my friends would mention Danny the Champion of the World as his or her favorite book. I was surprised -- I always imagined myself a Roald Dahl fan (as a little kid I must have read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory five times, and my copy of Matilda is dog-eared and faded from frequent use) and I had never heard of Danny until I was an adult. After reading a couple of chapters I turned to these friends and a...more
I recently picked up a few RD books cheaply and after some recent long and dense books felt the need for something lighter. I was a huge RD fan as a child and teen (as I imagine most of the world were) but haven't read any of the books in a long while.
I'm not sure I ever read this and couldn't remember a thing about it (I vaguely recall watching an old TV adaptation which I thought was about athletics and was clearly something else entirely)

Danny is a kid who lives in an old caravan with his dad and helps out at his father's mechanic station here and there. They have a great relationship, which is probably my favorite thing about this book, and Danny would rather spend time with his dad than anyone else in the world. One day, Danny discovers his father's deep, dark secret, and the next thing you know, they're off together, hatching a plan to get back at the mean and stingy Mr. Hazell, who has a number of pheasants on his land (I do...more
A bit far-fetched. I'd passed by this book many times before and it never caught my interest on account of it being long and the title not being more discriptive. You could be the champion of the world through many things; doing something exceedingly difficult or impossible, inventing something that could cure world hunger, or something else equally huge. Drugging two hundred pheasants is not exactly what I had in mind. All that crap Danny's father talks about poaching being an art. Who in their...more
Danny the Champion of the World was a book I read as a child and re-reading for this review brought back many childhood memories. Roald Dahl was one of my favourites as a child; and to some extent he still is.

Of all his books, this is perhaps my least favorite. One of the reasons being, it's difficult to tell whether the story wants to be silly or serious. There's strong elements of both, and I simply felt it didn't work--it needed to be one or the other. There were moments where it almost seemed dramatic, like the part where Danny is punished at school and his father's emotional reaction. Then there's the classic Dahl absurdities, like the methods used for catching pheasants. These were fun, but the...more

Meski...more

“I was glad my father was an eye-smiler. It meant he never gave me a fake smile because it's impossible to make your eyes twinkle if you aren't feeling twinkly yourself. A mouth-smile is different. You can fake a mouth-smile any time you want, simply by moving your lips. I've also learned that a real mouth-smile always has an eye-smile to go with it. So watch out, I say, when someone smiles at you but his eyes stay the same. It's sure to be a phony.”
