Oddly to some, this still stands as my favorite Roald Dahl book. It's hard for me to pinpoint why, since it's my opinion and I hate examining my opinions too closely, but to take a swing at it:
It's one of the least zany of Dahl's books, which ultimately gives it staying power. With many of his other works, you get caught up in the wacky characters, situations, and goings ons and it's hard to take them as seriously once you get a little bit older and gain a little bit of sophistication. YA. I got this book as a reward for participating in my library's summer reading program back when I was still short enough to read for cash and prizes. Ironically enough, I never read it. Sab instructed me to do so, and I finally dug it out and gave it a go.

Kali ini Dahl mengajak kita berkenalan dengan seorang anak lelaki berumur 9 tahun bernama Danny. Suatu hari, Danny memergoki Ayahnya yang diam-diam menyimpan rahasia besar dalam hidupnya. Ternyata Ayah Danny adalah seorang pemburu gelap, ia sering melakukan perburuan burung Pegar di wilayah hutan Mr. Hazell. Kemudian Ayah Danny menceritakan semua rahasianya tentang perburuan itu kepada Danny, termasuk bagaimana caranya agar dapat menangkap banyak burung Pegar. Ada metode ”Sumbat bulu kuda” dan metode ”Topi Lengket”.

Perburuan berikutnya tidak dilakukan Ayah Danny diam-diam, tapi dengan sepengetahuan Danny (meski ia belum boleh ikut). Tapi sayangnya, perburuan itu membuat Ayah Danny terluka parah karena kena jebakan dari penjaga-penjaga burung Pegar di Hutan Hazell. Danny yang mendapatkan firasat bahwa ada sesuatu yang terjadi pada Ayahnya memutuskan untuk menyusul ke hutan tersebut dan membawa Ayahnya pulang.

Sejak kejadian itu, Ayah Danny sering menjadi murung dan lebih pendiam. Ternyata diam-diam ia ingin balas dendam tidak secara langsung kepada Mr. Hazell. Yah, secara Mr. Hazell juga bukan seorang yang ramah terhadap tetangga dan sekitar, ia orang yang sok berkuasa dan sok kaya. Ide didapat, Ayah Danny akan menangkap sebanyak mungkin burung Pegar agar acara berburu Mr. Hazell yang terkenal di seluruh dunia menjadi gagal. Tapi bagaimana caranya agar ia bisa menangkap banyak burung Pegar tanpa ketahuan? Nah, di sinilah peran Danny yang paling penting. Ia memberikan ide yang keren, tapi apakah ide tersebut berhasil? Apakah mereka bisa menangkap banyak burung Pegar tanpa ketahuan?

Yak, ini adalah salah satu buku Dahl favorit saya. Terutama karena tokoh Si Ayah yang asyik banget. Kan ada gitu bapak-bapak yang pokoknya mah taunya kerja doank, jaraang banget mau main sama anaknya. Iya sih, ini mungkin karena ibunya Danny udah meninggal, tapi terus ngga ngelemparin tanggung jawab sebagai ayah gitu aja. Dia malah jadi bapak sekaligus Ibu, alih-alih nyari emak baru buat anaknya atau nitipin si anak ke rumah eyangnya.

Meski orangnya asyik, tapi si Ayah ini agak kelewatan juga sih. Apa nggak horor gitu ngajak anak kecil main di bengkel, kan banyak baut-baut kecil atau malah alat alat berat yang berbahaya. Ah tapi namanya cerita, boleh boleh aja donk ya XD

Although I find the fact that Danny's father teaches Danny how to steal disturbing, I did enjoy this book for its great characterization, the emotions it evokes, and the playful tone typical of Roald Dahl's writing.

Danny the champion of the world is a good book for a grade 6 to be reading because it isn’t a difficult book to read, but it is also moving closer towards books they would be reading in the future. This book also relates to someone around the ages of 10-12 because they are around the same age as Danny and might find it fascinating how he lives in a caravan and imagine that they are Danny are living in a caravan with their dad. Even though some things in the book are unusual, how the dad is in a way teaching his son that if he has an enemy it is okay to ruin their property and belongings, I find that children that are in grade 6 are old enough to know to find, doing the wrong thing isn’t the best idea. I find that my Buddy like this book because it didn’t only relate to boys but also girls, I think that she liked how there was a lot of adventure and mysteries that you would not expect to happen.
Sometimes the book was a bit over the top, but that was what made it interesting and unique, Danny the champion of the world is very different from other book I have read and that’s what made it a good book. I would definitely recommend this book, not only for younger children, but for early teenagers aswell.

Novel karya Roald Dahl ini sudah menjadi idaman saya sejak lama. Sempat membaca sebelumnya di PDA saya dulu yang kemudian harus almarhum karena rusak, akhirnya tuntas juga novel setebal 81 halaman ini dengan ebook reader saya yang baru. Halah hahahaha… Cerita terfokus hanya pada sosok Danny dan ayahnya, William, ayah yang hangat dan ramah. Keramahan seorang ayah tak perlu ditunjukkan dengan banyak senyum, melainkan dengan mata yang selalu bersinar setiap kali memandang putra tercinta. I was so lucky to have a father who has a smile on his eyes, begitu Danny merasa sangat bersyukur atas ayahnya.

Dibesarkan tanpa kehadiran ibu tidak membuat Danny merindukan sosok ibu. Ayahnya sudah berperan ganda untuk mengasuhnya. Mulai dari memandikannya ketika masih balita, mengantarnya sekolah ketika is berusia 7 tahun, mendongenginya tentang raksasa penangkap mimpi2 indah dan membagikannya kepada anak2 lain, hingga melibatkannya ke pengalaman masa kecil ayahnya, mencuri ayam di halaman tetangga! Bahkan, William yang memiliki bengkel mobil sering membiarkan Danny bermain dan membantu pekerjaan bengkelnya. Usia 9 tahuan Danny sudah mampu membongkar dan memasang kembali mesin secara sederhana bahkan menyetir Baby Austin dalam angka menyelamatkan ayahnya

Membaca novel ini jadi membuat saya sedikit iri dengan Danny yang memiliki ayah yang begitu dekat dengan anaknya. Bukan berarti ayah saya dulu semasa hidupnya tidak memperhatikan anak2nya, hanya kedekatan itu yang membuat saya membayangkan jika ayah saya masih hidup, apakah saya bisa sedekat itu? Tidur dengan menyelipkan jari2 satu sama lain membuat hati terasa hangat ketika membacanya. Komedi khas Roald Dahl terselip disana sini sepanjang novel yang terkadang membuat saya geleng2 kepala. Sedikit sadis tapi cukup setimpal untuk kejahatan yang dilakukan. Contohnya saja adegan ketika Doctor Spencer yang sakit hati melihat anjingnya ditendang oleh Hazell, juragan ayam. Dengan sepenuh sadar Doctor Spencer memberinya suntikan ke Hazell ketika ia sakit dengan jarum yang sengaja ditumpulkan. Wkwkwkwkwk… sadis tapi setimpal dengan kejahatan Hazell. Karya2 Roald Dahl baik anak2 ataupun dewasa sering menyelipkan hal2 semacam ini, menunjukkan betapa manusia itu mempunyai sisi sadis yang bisa disalurkan di saat2 tertentu.

Oya, untuk para guru, novel ini menyuguhkan banyak sekali deskripsi detil tentang caravan dimana Danny dan ayahnya tinggal, kondisi bengkel, tetangga yang baik dan yang jahatm dan tentu saja sosok detil seorang ayah. Boleh untuk contoh menulis tentang deskripsi dengan bahasa yang sederhana dalam pelajaran writing description hehehe. Pesan utama novel ini sebenarnya adalah untuk menjadi orangtua, tak perlu menjadi serius, banyak aturan yang akan membuat si anak bosan bahkan melawan. Jadilah orangtua yang SPARKY untuk membuat anak menjadi JUARA.

Ayahnya Danny memang luar biasa. Dia mengajarkan banyak hal kepada Danny. Dia mengenalkan kepada Danny petualangan yang bikin jantung deg-degan tapi hati rasanya puas.
