In this installment, the girls do not engage in any mean or disrespectful behavior (as they do in Books 1 and 2), but they do ignore safety, which is troubling.
I was pleased to see that in this book, Bean's behavior is more measured, and sometimes is even chastised. Bean decides not to throw a rock at her sister because "she knew better than that." Before playing with the mound of dirt in her friend's yard, she first seeks permission from the babysi...more

Dramatically fictional, describing the yearn to escape the hands of her elder sister, Nancy. Bean loved her babysitter, Leona, who she described as a talented drawer of horses.
Ivy, on the other hand, was called over by Bean, and secretly trying to help her escape and come over to the dirt mound at Sophie's.
But, all she came back with was a piece of yarn.
They overcome their "trying to escape" thing by letting Ivy secretly into the house while they discovered that Nancy was trying...more

The relationship between Bean and her older sister Nancy in the "Ivy and Bean" series is shallow. Unfortunately, this installment is based almost entirely on the animosity between them. I don't doubt that the relationship between a middle-school girl and her rambunctious 2nd grade sister can be a fraught one, but I have yet to see a moment shared between the sisters that is kind or understanding or based in any fondness. This causes a lack of complexity to the characters. Indeed, Nancy is one-no...more
Ivy and Bean get into mischief when Bean is left in the care of her older sister Nancy for the afternoon. Nancy has never babysat before so Bean takes full advantage of the situation. By the time mom and dad get home, Nancy has decided that she is still too young to baby sit.
I enjoyed the story and I can see why the series would be especially popular with second and third graders. The girls are feisty and adventurous. Their antics remind me of my three sisters and I when we were younger! We were...more

Bean's sister Nancy is her babysitter for the afternoon. Bean is not happy. She invites Ivy over so they can plan an escape (Bean is not allowed to leave the house).
I think this was my favorite of the first four books. I love Bean and her sister Nancy. Yes they are mean to each other. But I think it's funny. And even though I found Bean's actions predictable. I really thought they were funny. And my 6 year old niece did too.
My only complaint is that there was a big fiasco at the beginning of the...more
The punny title and cute cover of this little treasure are just the beginning. Inside the reader finds an amusing, rambling tale that comes together beautifully in the end, witty chapter titles, and the usual array of charming and/or humorous illustrations found in Ivy + Bean books. Our heroines shine, of course, their mischievous personalities continually getting them into and out of trouble. Barrows’ writing is flawless: nothing is wasted in the telling of the story, nothing is overdone or mis...more

We've never read any of the Ivy & Bean stories before, but I'd always wanted to. I discovered this audio CD at our local library and decided to borrow it so we could listen to the story in the car during a family road trip.
The narrative is entertaining, but I was very alarmed at the hijinx that Ivy and Bean get themselves into. I am not at all familiar with these characters, so I think if we read any more of the stories in this series, we should start at the beginning.

Ivy & Bean want to get into a world record book. Bean decides that she will dig a BIG hole. As she and Ivy are digging, they find some bones...could they be ancient dinosaur bones? They decide that they most likely are, so they set out to excavate the whole skeleton and assemble it. I love the chemistry between these two characters, and the view that the reader gets of the second grade social world is realistic and entertaining. We see the same characters from book to book, plus a few new on...more
Summary- They take care of the baby sitter, witch is Bean's older sister, Nancy.
Character Trait- Bean is, sad and imaginative. She is sad because she can't go play with her friends. She is imaginative because she imagines that she is in jail because she can't go outside and she thinks she can build a zip-line from her window to the tree next to her window. Her friend, Ivy tries to help her.
Most Important Part- When Ivy and Bean get stuck in the crawl space not the attic.

I choose this book because I wanted to finish a ll the books. The plot of this book is about when Beans parents leave her with Nancy her older sister. My favorite quote is "Ivy!it's a natrual disaster!you must be there!"because Ivy is always a trouble maker and whenever there is trouble she's there. The author's point of veiw is really creative. I think that the author point of veiw is from both Ivy and Bean. I would recommend this book to anyone that has an older sister that does not like them...more
When Ivy and Bean join forces they drive Bean’s eleven year old sister, Nancy, to the conclusion that she isn’t ready to baby sit any time soon. Add to that the fact that Ivy and Bean each blackmailed her enough that they each got $2 of the $20 Nancy was paid to watch Bean for the afternoon. Who knew second graders could wreck so much havoc? This is sure to be a hit for the early chapter book readers and as a read aloud in first, second or third grades (possibly even older grades).

I'm currently reading Ivy and Bean Take Care Of The Babysitter by Annie Barrows. The three main characters in the story are Nancy, her little sister Bean, and Bean's friend Ivy. Bean is always testing Nancy. I think the theme of this book is about how you can still be sneaky and play tricks on each other as long as no one is harmed. There are many examples of pranks that Bean is always playing on her sister. The book has many funny parts
Bean comes up with the great idea of living in the attic to escape her sister, Nancy, who is babysitting her. But, can she make it work?
As Nancy stays in the bathroom, putting on her mother's make-up, Bean and Ivy sneak up to the attic. All seems great till they discover that they cannot crawl back out of the attic.
Nancy helps them, but says she will tell on Bean. Bean, in turn, threatens to tell on Nancy for using the make-up.
In the end, she pays Ivy and Bean $2 each to keep their mouths shut...more

These girls, including Nancy, were too naughty. In fact, all the children in the neighborhood were. Poor Isaiah. And, forgive my ignorance, should they really be playing on the dirt pile? I mean, isn't it going to be awfully hard to use if the majority of it is mud run all over the yard and walk? I've read #1 and #4 - I guess I need to go back for 2 and 3 and see what the charm is that keeps this series going.
This is a great beginner chapter book for 2nd or 3rd graders. 7-9 year olds can relate to the humor, friendship, and sibling rivalry, especially since this book is about the main character's big sister babysiting her for the very first time. I read it to two kids that I nanny, and they thought the book was hilarious. It has pictures too, which aids the transition from picture books to chapter books.
This book is about Bean and her friend Ivy are playing outside and then Bean has to go inside because her older sister Nacy is awatching her. Then Bean feels like she is in jail. Then she takes a old t-shirt and writes sos on it but her friend Ivy dosent see it. Then she throws it atz Ivy and then Ivy sees Bean. Then Ivy sneakes in the house and the go up in Beans attic then they get stuck in thes attic then they scream then Nacy came and got hthem out of the attic.
...I kinda felt bad for Nancy in this one.
Loved the (especially Bean's) crazed expressions throughout. You know a book's gonna be good when you open it to page one and find an illustration of a mad (as in hatter) little girl holding a rock high over her head, preparing to smash down on something you can't quite identify. And then you read that it's corn. And that's even weirder.

All the kids in the neighborhood are playing with a huge dirt-pile volcano, but Bean is called in to meet her new baby-sitter: her older sister Nancy! And Nancy's even getting paid! After activities an experienced baby-sitter would never have allowed, the sibling rivalriy issues are resolved to Bean's satisfaction and Nancy decides babysitting is not her forte.
Ivy and Bean Take Care of the Babysitter was a delightful read. Bean has a realistic relationship with her sister, Nancy, who babysits her for the first time. I could relate to the story in regards to the dirt volcano at a friends house and the crawl space adventure. Ivy and Bean have great imaginations and know how to have fun.
Another adventure for Ivy and Bean - Bean's big sister Nancy is her babysitter and Bean isn't happy about that! As Nancy indulges in putting on makeup while home alone, Bean sneaks Ivy into the house and the two venture into the "off limits" attic. The sisters work out an agreement not to tell on each other and Nancy decides not to babysit her sister again.
Ivy and Bean are back and they are "taking care" of the baby sitter - Bean's sister, Nancy! It's Nancy's first baby sitting job, and the girls do their best to take advantage of the situation! Again, I don't love their attitudes, but my daughter really likes their adventures. So, on to the next one!
