Prisons, poisons, and passions combine in a gorgeously written fantasy noir.

As a pickpocket, Digger expects to spend a night in jail every now and then. But she doesn't expect to find Lord Durrel Decath there as well--or to hear he's soon to be executed for killing his wife.
Durrel once saved Digger's life, and when she goes free, she decides to use her skills as a thief,...more

Star Crossed was amazing--gorgeous writing and beautifully developed characters. The same is true of Liar's Moon. Fantastic.

Did you know the publisher hasn't picked up the third book in this series? Please help out and petition the publisher to have the last book in the trilogy published!

Thanks!

Boy I’m so happy this sequel didn’t disappoint me like so many others have. At first I was mighty concerned and pretty bored because the first 100 pages of this book were so dull and lifeless. That whole information dropping thing that occurred in the first book was happening in abundanc...more

Overall, didn't enjoy this nearly as much as STARCROSSED (which in turn I didn't enjoy nearly as much as A CURSE DARK AS GOLD) -- that said, I suspect that STARCROSSED hit a lot more of my buttons, which may be why I didn't care for this as much.

My biggest peeve was probably that we get multiple queer characters in this story -- yay! But they're all male. As a queer women who really enjoyed the first book, it was definitely frustrating for me, to say the least, even a bit hurtful. I also felt li...more

Yes. Yes indeed, Mr. Spock.

First things first, I cannot believe the ending of this book. The GALL. Oh, the gall. I'll give Ms. Bunce credit: she has balls to pull that off and I can't really be infuriated with her because she did it so damn well. But still. I was counting on her not to end it with a cliffhanger and she did, so that was a disappointment.
Therefore, the five star rating is actually six stars with one deducted. Got it? Good.
Now, how to review this book without spoiling the first...

*SPOILER ALERT* Okay. Seriously? NOT COOL. Ending the book with Tegen's one-sentence appearance and thus successfully making us all lust for the next book is not cool. At all. Oh, I just bet your having a great laugh right now Ms.Bunce. Haha.
So anyway I didn't nearly enjoy Liar's Moon as much as I did Starcrossed. I thought that the mystery, setting, and characters were more interesting in the first book. My only problem with Starcrossed was that it had no romance. Which didn't make it lacking...more

I really enjoy Elizabeth Bunce's fantasies. I loved Star Crossed so much that I would count Liar's Moon as one of my most anticipated books of the year.

In Liar's Moon Digger is back in Gerse. It is now summer, and while Prince Wierolf and his men fight in the country, she is in the city getting by. That is until she is mysteriously arrested and thrown in prison. She ends up in a cell with Durrel Decath, who made a significant impression in the last book. Durrel is in prison for killing his wife,...more

I thought this book was AMAZING. I loved the continuation of characters and the different type of plot. I was hooked from page one and could not out the book down once I got started. I am now going to research and if there will be a next book.

Adventure

This book is about a girl named Digger that was a pickpocket on the run and could also see magic when she touched anything. There was a war going on, and three sides were fighting. Soldiers were always in the streets scaring the people in the town. One night she gets thrown in jail and runs into a man who once saved her life, Durrel Decath, the son of a lord. He was accused of murdering his wife, but claims he didn’t do it and asks Digger to help prove it. She goes on an adv...more

If you've even read one review, you'll know that there's a HUGE cliffhanger at the end of the book, and it's not even for sure whether or not there'll be a third book. So be aware.

Also, know that this book, while it's a mystery, it's also a romance, and it doesn't work out as well as the first book.

I'm not going to go into the plot of the book, because like all of her books so far, which are all first-person YA, it moves bit by bit while you uncover secrets or things happen and happen until ther...more

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales.

Quick & Dirty: Great Fantasy book filled with beautiful world-building, a sweet romance, and wonderful developed characters.

Opening Sentence: I’d have gotten away if that little guard hadn’t cracked me in the eye.

The Review:

Digger has been back in Gerse for a few months now and she has fallen back into to her old ways. She is still very skilled at pick pocketing, and very rarely gets caught but one night she is arrested and thrown into a cell with someone...more

The sequel to Star Crossed was not disappointing. It was filled with more of the same characters and a new and interesting cast. I loved learning more about Durrel and Cwalo especially and I felt invested in everything. I loved how the book was wrapping up and the mystery unravelling. As I stated in my review of Star Crossed though, I refused to believe that Tegen was really gone. (view spoiler)[I liked Durrel for Digger. He was good for her, but it didn't really fit. He is still a noble, a lord...more

I've been extraordinarily busy with happenings in my life lately, so much so that I've had trouble finding time to read, and when I do I have trouble calming my mind enough to become engaged in anyone's story but my own. So I consider it high praise that this book was able to maintain my interest enough that I could get through it; had I read this in a different mindset when I was eager to be transported into another world, I have no doubt it would have been a five-star read for me; as it is, my...more

This book was every bit as good as its predecessor, Starcrossed, except for two significant (for me) flaws.
1)There is a relatively major plot point that was obvious to me the moment it was mentioned but which takes Digger forever to figure out; and after she does figure it out, she promptly has a spat of amnesia. The mystery part of the tale was, overall, superbly handled, but this particular point stuck me like a burr. I am not a fan of amnesia when it makes the reader more informed than the m...more

I have mixed feelings on this book. In some ways I actually liked it better than Starcrossed, the first novel in the series. This is a true mystery novel in a fantasy world, and I love mysteries. As a mystery novel it really works.

As a fantasy novel, magic is present yet is hardly ever used (I can think of only one use where it is truly significant to the plot). The beginning chapter really didn't work for me--the main character, who, unlike normal, is absolutely oblivious of current events, ge...more

This was my VOYA review for this amazing book (yes, these are MY words in a nationally published professional journal); Some spoilers ahead:

Bunce brings back Digger, the clever thief/con artist from Starcrossed (Arthur A. Levine, 2010/VOYA February 2011), after leaving readers wondering what her fate would be once she departed from the Nemairs’ castle. Digger returns to Gerse, her hometown, and her previous way of life but is caught and thrown into a cell with Durrel Decath. Decath once saved he...more

I found out about halfway through reading this that the third book in this series wouldn't be published because Starcrossed didn't sell well enough. I was offended because are you kidding me? These books are great! House of Night is ongoing with eleven books and Elizabeth C. Bunce can't get a third book when Thief’s Errant has both engaging characters and plot?

As I got closer to the end I thought maybe I could be okay with it? Maybe Bunce knew ahead of time she wouldn't get to publish the third...more

If you haven't already read Starcrossed, you should. Then come back and read this review of its sequel, which I liked just as much.

Digger is back in the city and in a heartbeat, she's in back in the thick of things - this time, she's been roped into helping her old friend Durrell. He's been imprisoned for killing his wife. Only, he says he didn't. And Digger believes him. So with the help of friends old and new, Digger starts to do what she does best - dig. Dig for information, clues, and not a...more

I enjoyed this sequel to Starcrossed. It was $9 for my kindle which was a bit expensive but I really wanted to read it so I splurged. It continues on a few months after StarCrossed. It is a pretty good book though I am not sure I liked it as much as the first. The beginning is actually kind of boring.

Things I like:
1 - The ending. Though it makes me mad that I read this book already. I should have waited till the third one is out. Usually I try not to start a series unless it is limited to a tril...more

I loved the last book, and I loved this one too.

The plot was thick with mystery again, and if you read Starcrossed, you'd know that it was full of twists. The only thing that bothered me was that this book was more like a detective doing an investigation, without much of the feel of the first one, but I let it slide. The stakes were lower too. I felt that the war wasn't touched upon at all, which I had been expecting to be the main point of this sequel, considering where we left off of Starcross...more

Celeyn, also known as Digger, is an excellent thief, a believable liar, and is adept with some forms of magic. She can literally see traces of magic in others, a skill that her brother Werne, the Lord High Inquisitor, wishes to harness. In this continuation of Star Crossed, Digger is still suffering from the loss of Tegen, her true love and fellow thief. But when a friend of nobleman Durrel Decath enlists her aid in proving his friend's innocence, Digger is drawn to Durrel against her will. The...more

I loved the first book in this series but this one dragged for me. I think the book description killed it for me before I even began though. (The last line of the description has been changed on the Goodreads hardcover edition but remains the same on Amazon/kindle description.) Although there was no romance in the first novel, the chemistry between Digger and Wierolf was fantastic. The original description for this book gave away a romance with another character so I already started the book a b...more

Bunce doesn’t disappoint , this is a fantastic follow-up to StarCrossed!! The story starts rolling from the beginning and the pace continues till the end, and in between we are given ample adventure, sleuthing and yes, romance.

As with most fantasies, this one is filled with odd, unpronounceable names and that little bit of must have magic. However, this is no Tolkien read. It’s taut and straight forward, no long descriptions to bog the reader down. It also boasts a useful map and helpful lexicon...more

This book is not as good as its predecessor. I found alot of things annoying about this book like the random relationship that occurs during this story. There was no hint of this relationship in the last book, where it seemed like Digger and The Price had a chance of forming an relationship.

Also the plot... the plot just dragged on, i felt like the this book could have been shorter considering the small amount of events that occurred in this story that the author chose to drag on and on and on....more

I was happy to be reunited with Digger, my favorite thief. In this second book, she is back in the city of Gerse and during a night spent in prison she is surprised to encounter an old friend. Durrel Decath was one of my favorite characters from book one, but he was only present briefly in the beginning and then dropped out of the story. I sensed a connection between these two, and felt sure we had not seen the last of him. In this book, he is in prison for the murder of his wife and Digger will...more

After StarCrossed, I'd have to say this was just disappointing. It was a pretty good read, and it started off well, but as it kept going, I just found myself losing interest. I didn't care as much about the characters, and the stakes were just so much lower. StarCrossed was a big adventure, and this was just... I don't know, less. At first, I couldn't put it down, but that was because I felt it building up to something. But the something never came. The plot didn't seem important in the way that...more

I have mixed feelings about this book. I loved the first book in the series, and I was excited to see the return of some characters from the first book who disappeared pretty early on. But there's also a problem-first of all, my favorite characters from the first book are no where to be found! Where are Meri and the Nemair? Whither Wierolf??? Thankfully, I became really fond of Raffin this time around, so there was someone to fill the void, but I also discovered that I like Durrel a lot better a...more

The good news is that you don't need to have Starcrossed fresh in your mind to enjoy this one, although if you haven't read it, I highly recommend it. The (slightly) bad news is that this one didn't feel as tight as the first.

The good! Bunce creates a fantasicaly realized world, complete with complex politics and religions and social structures. Nothing startlingly original, but well-crafted. The large cast of characters is fantastic and nuanced, with plenty of people you love and plenty of peop...more

This is the sequel to Star Crossed which I read a week or two ago and really enjoyed. If I'm being completely honest, I didn't like this one quite as much, but it was still really good. The main character, alternately known as "Digger" and "Celyn" is arrested and ends up in a cell with an old friend, Lord Durrel, who has been accused of murdering his wife. Digger knows he must be innocent and as soon as she gets out she is on the case to prove him innocent. Her search leads her to more complicat...more

I really really enjoyed the first in this series, it had all the little stupid things I love in a fantasy novel. So I had high expectations for the second, and almost all of them were met. It was fast paced and exciting, and Digger is still a great narrator. However, many of the characters that I loved from the first book were not present in this at all. There were great new characters like Koya who deserves her own book, but I missed Meri and Wierolf. There was something about Durrel the love i...more
