This book was Fantasy. I didn't like this book vary much. I thought it was kind of pointless. at the beginning of the book i liked it but towards the end it got stupid. Its about a hamster and his life pretty much. I would not suggest this stupid book. It was a waste of my time. It was about as fun as watching paint dry. Please take this book out of history of man kind. I would rather spend the day with a dead goat. Id rather eat hairy mold then read this book again. Other then that it was a pre...more

Smart hamster, smart humor. If you like this you'd probably also like I, Houdini. It's also somewhat reminiscient of The Mouse and the Motorcycle. It's not for the littlest children - rather, it's a step up in both thoughtfulness and reading level compared to My Name Is Stilton, Geronimo Stilton, and there's no mystery because it's more of a quest to find a home and a coming-of-age story.

Ok, sorry, in case you've not read any of those other books I should say something about this as a work unto...more

Freddy is a rather pompous golden hamster who learns to read and write. Wow!

I first saw this book at a thrift store and bought it for my nephew who has a hamster. (I never can remember if his hamster is golden. His hamster's name is Bitey! My nephew's mom--my sister--said the only way he could get a hamster is if he named it Bitey, so he agreed. Bitey has HUGE testicles, as my sister insisted on showing me during my last visit.)

Anyway, I knew this book as one my nephew had read and liked, so I d...more

While my kids (6 & 8 yrs old, 8 y.o. mostly) seemed to really enjoy this book as I read it to them before bed, I thought the book was a little too complicated had they been reading it by themselves. I had to put inflection into it and explain several concepts to them. I would recommend only kids that read very fluently and infer really well from the story read this. Think another year would have maybe been about right for my 8 y.o.

Otherwise, cutish story about a hamster that can read and wr...more

Freddy is a super smart Golden Hamster. He knows that he is different that the others in his cage, so he gets himself adopted by Sophie, the best girl in the world. Unfortunately for Freddy, Sophie's mom is not thrilled with the idea of a rodent in the house. Freddy must think fast before he is sent back to the overcrowded, substandard conditions of the pet store.

A so-so novel that was translated from the German. Yes, Freddy is cute and smart, but there is nothing that puts this novel above the...more

I found this book recommended on a website as a "funny" book. I have been on a quest for humorous books that my son would enjoy reading since he loves humor so much. This book was pretty fun. The humor was very juvenile, which is understandable since this is a juvenile book. I think the humor would appeal to my son, but it didn't really appeal to me...I'm not really sure why. I can't put my finger on it. We'll see if my son likes it.

Freddy is no ordinary golden hamster. After learning to read Freddy wants nothing more than to read more and write. To do this he must leave his current residence. This is a subdued story -- the adventure and emotions never go above a certain level. In my mind Freddy's voice was that of 101 Dalmations' Pongo (1961 version). Perhaps that's why I found his pompous attitude somewhat tolerable?

I didn't want to like this. Too cute. Too inane. That's what I kept telling myself. But in the furry little animals genre, it veers more on the 'Bunnicula' side, and less on the "Geronimo Stilton' side. This is about an intellectual hamster. And I loved Joe Cepeda's deceptively simple pen and ink drawings. Maybe I like the furry little animals genre more than I'd like to admit.

A self assured Hamster finds himself in the loving hands of a little girl, teaches himself how to read, and ends up in the hands of a cat and guinea pig owner who he must learn to get along with. I guess it fills a void, everyone on Earth seems to love this book but me. It was okay, but a little on the boring side. I mean seriously - the book is an "autobiography" of a hamster!!

I know I know. Not my level of reading, but its a funny story.
I was just learning how to read and me and my dad went to borders, i picked out a book that i wanted, and he said he would get it for me if i would read I, Freddy, of course i said yes. but i never read it, so i was keeping my promise and finished it over our cross country road trip. 7 years later. :)

My brother adored this book, and I'm fully behind it as well. Freddy the Hamster, head thick with stories of a mythical golden land for hamsters, attempts to locate this land while learning how to read, type, and befriending a few hamster enemies along the way.

I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoyed Captain Underpants, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, etc.

Hamster is telling a first person account of his life. The biggest redeeming qualities of this book:
teaches how to structure and write a book in a covert way
gives hamster care and general animal care info in a non-threatening and educational way
provides a funny and entertaining story that my 11-year old granddaughter valued and appreciated.

I have gerbils, and my coworker thought I’d enjoy a series written “by” a hamster. Sort of like a cross between Ralph Mouse and the Bunnicula series (both of which I loved as a kid), this is a cute series with some glaringly obvious—to adults at least—plot holes. I better keep all pencils away from my gerbils, just in case.

Freddy is a golden hamster who is quite intellectual and snobby. He teaches himself to read and write and hopes to write his autobiography. Some of the book is quite humorous and I also liked the illustrations. I think that most kids like to imagine what their pets are doing while they are not home. Freddy is always quite busy!

This series is very popular with my students, so I had to wait my turn to read this one, but it was worth the wait! Very clever and fun fantasy! Interestingly, it was translated from German and has been translated into eleven languages, so I'm way behind on hearing about it, especially since it was published in 1998!

While this could have been a cute and clever book about a very intelligent hamster, this was, instead, a story that encouraged arrogance, selfishness, and disrespect. Freddy doesn't really care about anyone in the story other than himself. As I read, I kept waiting for him to learn about considering others, but it never happened.
Lisa
Cute book. Freddy is a unique Golden Hamster who learns to read and write. He's also a bit full of himself. The tells a fun story, though, and I imagine elementary school children would enjoy this book, especially if they have a hamster of their own.

We just happened upon this series at the paperback swap section of our library. We really enjoyed the first book and have noticed that there are four more in the series, so we will be starting the second book soon. We like the anthropomorphic descriptions of the pets and their interactions the best.

This book was one of the first freddy books i should have read. The book explains who Freddy endend up where he is now. I don't want to give away what happens to the people who haven't read it yet but you should if you haven't.

This book was a little good 3 reasons why:

One it had very good artistic pictures. Two it had an exciting setting. Third it was very clever in putting it in order beginning, middle and end.

It's about a golden hamster's life. He is a very motivated, smart, and cute hamster. I have a hamster too, so I can relate to some things, although my Hamster, Frisky, does not steal pencil to escape.

Smart, sassy, and adorable. Good for bedtime chapter book reading with the kids. The sketches within the stories are cute and funny, which keeps my kids wanting to know what happens next. I plan on reading the entire series with them.
Maggie
It wasn't as good as I expected it to be, but it was good. Freddy likes to read and write like me, even though he's a hamster! I REALLY want a hamster!
Cindy
Made a good read-aloud (the kids enjoyed it), reminded me of The Mouse and the Motorcycle and other talking-animal-learns-to-read-and/or-communicate books
Anna
The funniest and most intelligent hamster you'll ever meet. Hysterical moments. The cat, Sir William -- priceless. You've gotta read this one.
