I'm quite disappointed in this book. A pity, but that's what happens when you judge a book by its cover, I suppose.

In my humble opinion, it's written like a mediocre fan fiction. The dialog sounds forced between characters, characters who I immediately didn't relate to. One of the reviewers commented on the use of language, saying that it's "how teenagers talk." I'm only a year out of my teens, & no one's speech habits or word choices have irritated me as greatly as these characters did.

I thought this book was AMAZING, the plot had me hooked and would not let me go until the very end and even when I had finished I just could not stop thinking about it. Majesty Alistair is just an average teenage girl with a normal life until she over hears some of her fellow students planning a church massacre. Unable to go to the police, majesty feels she only has one choice – to discover herself who she overheard and to stop the massacre before it happens. Little by little majesty discovers t...more

Kings & Queens takes place in a time period of 6 weeks, 5 months after Majesty's father dies. Majesty is still raw from the whole ordeal and is trying very hard to go on in life without being irritated by her mother's new friend, Paul and the fact that she's in love with one of her best friends, Derek. In fact, Alec, the other best friend, is the only person keeping her on her toes, patient and just being there for her.

The way Kings & Queens begins will surely take the reader on a confus...more

I managed to read the prologue and the first chapter of this book and found I just could not continue reading for the life of me. The writing style (which I really should have tried to preview beforehand, so this is all my fault) is rather babbling and forced and I can't see myself finishing a novel written the way this one is no matter how interested I am in the storyline. Maybe I can do it one chapter at a time over a long period of time once I get a few of the other books I own read.

But also....more

Somebody in this book is making plans to do some very bad things. It falls to Majesty to try to figure out who and what.

Majesty's two best friends, Derek and Alec, prove capable and willing to help... maybe a little too capable and willing. As the plot twists and turns and clues turn up in the most unexpected places, Majesty wonders if even they can be trusted. She's on her own. And somebody evidently wants her dead.

Kings & Queens is recounted in third-person narrative with an intimacy and c...more

This book is much unlike anything I've read, certainly a more fast paced and gritty YA novel than most. I am still gathering my thoughts on Kings & Queens, a lot happens in the month and a half timeframe that this book is set. If you are looking for a suck-you-in, gotta-pay-attention, don't-wanna-miss a moment story; look no further, Kings & Queens is for you. The first two chapters didn't have me convinced but as I read on I let go of my doubts and ended up enjoying it. This will defini...more

I’m not happy with this book. I expected more, especially seeing its banners everywhere lately and people gushing over the cover, I expected a lot more. I will say I was kind of hesitant about the whole love triangle part of the story, but as it turned out that was the least of my worries.

First I really had issues with the main character. She just did such dumb, and I mean dumb, thin...more

RATING: 5 ADDICTIVE DEREK STARS!!

Curveballs are woven masterfully through this energetic read. I went through a lot of emotions reading this book.

At first I felt confused with the Prologue.

Then the story kicks in like I should really know the characters and where I am at. Now I am not criticising as this is a most exciting read, but it just takes the reader a bit to get their bearings. But that is Courtney's style of writing, getting us to learn along with the characters. It felt like I was sl...more

First off, let me start by saying - this cover just kind of speaks to me. It's gorgeous!

Now.. onto the good stuff! This book for me was.. fun. Yes, fun. How, you might ask?! Well - let me just tell you!

Majesty, or "Maj" is one amazing girl in her own right. I mean, how can you NOT like a girl who is manager of a baseball team, trying to convince her heart to decide already (Derek or Alec!) and while while trying to put a stop to a "church massacre" she overheard was going...more

Majesty, spunky and defiant, stumbles upon a disastrous church massacre plot and will do anything to intervene before innocent people are killed. The scenes are so believable that I can already picture some of them coming to life. The story has a complex plot, but once you start reading it’ll be hard to put down!

Vail’s writing is as different as a prince to a lowly peasant. She has a way of making the characters seem so genuine by their actions, decisions and even the slang they speak. Everyone...more

This book was weird. Not bad, just weird. I totally loved this book!!! After a few chapters, I got sucked in and literally could NOT put it down. It wasn't what I expected, I'll just say that. It's very different from other YA books I've read, though, I admit, I've been lingering in the UF bin for quite awhile. But, I honestly wouldn't even know how to categorize this because it has a little bit of everything. YA books are usually more linear, but this story took many turns I didn't expect and w...more

Like a Teenage Melrose Place Sped Up...

Majesty is a girl of action with a number of problems to solve. She manages her high school's baseball team (on a winning streak), is convinced that her father's death wasn't an accident, overhears a plot to gun down a church service and is unsure how to alert the police, and is bouncing back and forth as to which of her two best friends she is in love. And, of course, her mom has a new, peculiar boyfriend ( a situation about which she feels a bit Hamlet-y....more

This book... was something else. I'll start with the outside and work my way in so I can form the right words for what I want to say about Kings & Queens. The cover is gorgeous. I love the colors, I love the slight grunge feel to it with the text and brushes. The lips and everything about the cover sums up what you'll get to look forward to in the book. Confused? You should be.

I think the best way for me to describe the book is quirky. "Beautifully unique" would be another term I'd use. I ju...more

If it wasn't for the heavy confusion throughout I'd gladly give this book 5 stars. I kept thinking I was missing something obvious and that so much of the first half made no sense- random thoughts like psychotic issues. What I did fully comprehend I really liked though! And then after something really awful happened I freakin bawled like nothing I ever have because of a book before. Not crying, but sobbing... The kind where snot mixes with your tears and runs down your face! Getting a visual? Ye...more

Disclaimer: The fact that I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review has not affected my rating.

Kings & Queens was, in a word, a different book. When I think of YA mystery, I think of urban-fantasy-evil-witch mysteries, I-think-I-am-secretly-a-billionaire-heir-because-I’m-adopted mysteries, or popular-girl-whodunnit mysteries. Instead, Kings & Queens is a lot more focused on real life crime and murders.

Vail is able to manipulate both characters and readers’ mind...more

Majesty Alistair goes to Cedar Creek High where she helps manage the Colts baseball team and is in drama club. She is secretly in love with her best friend Derek McCarthy. She is also best friends with Alec. Majesty has not been the same since her father's death a couple of months ago. Majesty has befriended Warren Niles who is an outcast and freak to the rest of the school. Warren is not who he appears to be even to his best friend Jase. Both Warren and Derek of things that are not possible or...more

It took me a lot longer to read this book than it usually takes me. I had a really hard time getting into it--it just felt too jumpy to me and that made it really hard for me to focus. Overall, though, I found that I did enjoy it by the time I got to the end. While it takes some time to get used to the writing style and pacing, the story moves very quickly. There were periods when I felt too much detail was being given in a short amount of time, and that made it feel a bit cramped and sloppy, bu...more

Kings & Queens offers a little bit of everything, romance, action, intrigue, all wrapped around one town's set of high school melodrama. At times it was heart & gut wrenching. Others it made you want to laugh out loud and cry. Yet for some reason I got confused almost from the start of this novel. In spite of its complexities it was difficult to follow the plot with too much going on at once. Although it requires you to think, something most YA books fail at, Kings & Queens weaves so...more

This book was hard for me to get into at first but I forced myself into it for a couple chapters and then I was hooked. I read it in just a couple days. I really really liked that after the one main twist it wasn't over yet there were still quite a few twists to go so the book didn't get boring. I read the book in 3 sittings and was a little bit sad when it was over. I definitely recommend this book and hope that you will sincerely give it a shot. I don't want to give anything away but it was qu...more

Kings & Queens by Courtney Vail is a cute young adult mystery novel- and check out that cover! I love the lips and colors. The beginning of the book is a little bit confusing, the voice of the author's writing confused me for awhile. Though after getting past the initial confusion, the plot is actually very interesting- it kept me reading. I love a good mystery and ended up smitten with Vail's writing style.

The story and the characters are supremely complex. Majesty herself is eccentric, ind...more

I'm not sure how to start this review. I guess now that I am done with it It made sense in a weird, demented way. The book seemed to me like it was too packed down with too much information , but at the same time too little. One moment Majesty is this scared little girl the next she's trying to seduce her friends. OR she seems to be a little airheaded or wait a lot airheaded but than switches to being smart. It just keeps going from there on and on. Even though it was relatively short I fe...more

I think my first thought would be interesting, and maybe slightly confusing. I will admit that the first few chapters I was like, "What is going on?" but after getting into the book it was great!! I liked the mystery element to it, the twists to the story, and the characters. I am usually pretty good at solving mysteries, but I will say that this book really did keep me guessing until almost the end. Evey one seems suspect, but then you think that certain people couldn't possi...more

Courtney Vail's Kings & Queens has a complex and vivid story. At times, I found myself confused about some of the events that took place and how they came about. The characters and their individual POV's are just as complex, but each is really unique. I didn't really understand what was going on with the dreams of disaster--were they real premonitions or just their minds playing off the events happening in real lif...more

I received the book Kings & Queens by Courtney Vail from Member Giveaway's on Library thing. Kings & Queens is about a teenage girl named Majesty who overhears a plot for a church massacre. To add to this trouble Maj (as she is called in the book.) had lost her father in a tragic car accident five months earlier. Only Maj does not believe it was an accident. She keeps hounding the police and the police are sick of her. Now she has to find a way to tell the police about the overheard plan...more

Kings & Queens seemed more like a written version of the games "Who Dun'It" and "Clue. I liked it, there was mystery, betrayal, intrigue, romance, and murder. And Majesty Alistair gets smacked right in the middle of it all. Who does she trust when all the fingers seem to point at everyone closest to her? And can she stop the killers in time before someone she loves is dead?

When Majesty Alistair gets kidnapped and is forced to watch a church massacre, her world falls into a tailspin. She's be...more

COURTNEY VAIL writes totally twisted YA and adult suspense. She enjoys braiding mystery, suspense & romance with some kind of weirdness. Her addictions to crazy coffee concoctions, Funny Bones, Ben & Jerry's, and bacon keep her running and writing. She currently lives in New England with a comedian stud and a wild gang of kidlets.
