Recommends it for: baobabs and historical figures

Something of a foundational text in surrealist prose, this was written largely in the 20s, half some two years before Breton's Surrealist Manifesto, and originally collected and published in 1957. Benjamin Peret was a complete original, a serial drop-out who discovered Apollinaire during WWI service and committed his life to poetry, often of the most fluidly bizarre sort of automatism, a violent distiller of his most spontaneous internal designs.

Although this is a translation from the original French, it is still a great read, if you like Péret's playful spontaneous style of surrealism. It's a true classic.
