Who is the Holy Spirit, and exactly what does He do?

Many people find the Holy Spirit mysterious, confounding—even controversial. Why is the third person in the Godhead—the one Jesus said would be the believer’s ultimate source of truth and comfort—the source of such confusion?
In The God I Never Knew, Robert Morris clearly explains that the Holy Spirit’s chief desire is fo

Thank you Robert Morris for writing this book and clearing up a lot of common misconceptions about the Holy Spirit. Robert addresses the topic head on that so many pastors are reluctant to talk about. I've spent my whole life in church but don't recall a pastor ever going into depth about the Holy Spirit, The Holy Spirit's reason for being, the Holy Spirit's role in the trinity and all the promises and benefits that are available

This is a review I've put off writing for a long time, but since I received the book as part of the Waterbrook  Multnomah  Blogging for Books program and obligated myself to provide a review, I'd better go ahead. The main reason I didn't want to review it is that I haven't finished the book. I couldn't. There are simply too many good books to waste time with bad ones. However, I did give it a real effort, and would like to share the reasons why I didn't find the book worthy of continuing.

I really loved this book! I learned so much and I felt like it was all backed up with scripture so well. If you're wanting a better relationship with the Holy Spirit, this is a great book to check out to see how that can happen.
I received this book as a Christmas gift, and wasn't sure what to expect. I would agree with probably 75% of the author's conclusions at a big picture level: there is an ongoing ministry of the Holy Spirit available to all believers today. We should seek, and expect, the work of the Holy Spirit in all the dimensions described in Scripture.

Unfortunately, the 25% I disagree with is precisely how that theology is applied to daily Christian experience. When this book moves to specifics, it either go

Robert Morris presents one of the most Biblically sound studies on the subject of the Holy Spirit I've seen in a long time. He aptly points out quite correctly that the Holy Spirit is not an "It", but a "He" as part of the Holy Trinity...Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not just some "weird" thing we sound skirt around and avoid.

Too many "full gospel" teachings in many churches today are based on having "mountain top" experiences only. Robert lays it out exactly like the Scripture

This book was an unexpectedly well written, systematically tackled defense of the role of the Holy Spirit in a Christian's life. Many Christians don't fully grasp the help that is available in His abiding presence.
If you have ever wondered about the baptism of the Holy Spirit, or words of wisdom, knowledge, working of miracles...this book will help you better understand. If you've been taught that all supernatural manifestations were over with in the first century, this book will show you why th

If you are a Christian, you need to read this book!!!

This book is an excellent source for any and all Christians who want to know the third person in the Trinity, The Holy Spirit, better. For any who want to walk more fully in the the anointing of God through Jesus and most specifically through the Holy Spirit. He is often misunderstood and greatly understated, and in this book we are introduced to Him in a format that is easily digested, with even some points of humor but always deep insight a

Did you know there are three baptisms? I had not seen this realization before and I a thankful for Robert to point this out. Due this new information, Are you living in the power of the Holy Spirit or in the strength of the flesh? We all know how it goes when we try walking in the Life for Christ by our own strength, frustration and exhaustion occur. Robert gives clear scriptures to back up his findings and applies stories of his own to go along with them. I enjoyed the book and learned new insi ...more

I recieved this book free through GoodReads First Reads and I'm so glad I did. I'm an over analyzer and I get frustrated easily when it comes to religeon etc et al. Robert Morris helped simplify, in wonderful detail, who the Holy Spirit is and explains how the Holy Spirit works in our lives. This is a book I most likely refer back to often in my life.

I absolutely loved this book. Robert Morris spoke to the reader as if the conversation regarding The Holy Spirit was sitting on the back porch pouring out experiences backed by scripture. I would recommend this to any Christian desiring to experience the fullness of God.

Absolutely fantastic. Morris clearly and persuasively reveals the Personhood of the Holy Spirit, His personality, His role in our lives as believers, and the various gifts He bestows upon the people of God. Highly recommend.

I've watched Robert Morris on television and ordered a couple of his teachings on dvd and cd. I've found him to be a very sound Bible-based teacher. This short book was very helpful and informative!

I grew up in a church that didn't speak of the Holy Spirit and discouraged anything to do with speaking to or displaying gifts of the spirit in any outward way. Eventually, they moved past this teaching but my knowledge had huge gaps. Last year, in reading the New Testament, but especially Acts I was stunned to face the importance of the Holy Spirit in a new way I had never seen before. I suddenly knew there was something I was missing in my Christian walk. While I was saved because of Jesus and ...more

Robert Morris put the Holy Spirit into simple terms that any Christian can understand. (I do not recommend this book to non-Christians, simply because the book requires a base knowledge of the Christian faith and the Holy Spirit.) However, Christians who are familiar with the concept of the Holy Spirit will benefit from this book. While I found I knew most of the information already, something about Morris' simple illustrations helped me to better understand that knowledge and how to apply that ...more
I started this book with my book group at church. They abandoned it, but I had it on Kindle, so I kept plugging away at it on my phone here and there when I found myself with time and no book. I understand why the group abandoned it, but, while I don't necessarily agree with everything that is said, I think that there is something to be said for de-mystifying the Holy Spirit. Speaking in tongues doesn't make you crazy or a religious zealot. And, while I don't believe that God the Holy Spirit is ...more

I really enjoyed The God I never Knew by Robert Morris - this is a great way to learn more about the Holy spirit and how he can be our friend and help us to reflect Christ in our daily lives. This book explains the gifts of the spirit and how the Holy Spirit can indwell and enrich our spirits. I am familiar with the works of the Spirit but I still had things to learn and this book was helpful to me and I think you will find it helpful to you to. no matter if you are a new Christian or have been ...more

This book was an OK read. It wasn't exactly what I expected and was a bit redundant for my taste. The author seemed to repeat the same information over and over from one chapter to the next. Although I understand the need for repetition (at times) to emphasize a point, there was too much.

I also didn't much care for the author's own personal examples of how he spiritually ministered to individuals, knew what they were thinking, etc. I'm not disputing it, it just seemed to elevate him more than an

This book teaches you about the Holy Spirit. Teaches us that it is inside of us, helps and guides us, comforts and never leaves us. Teaches us to find friendship with God. An excellent book for all christian and non christian, to read and study, even if you don't go along with all that the author believes and writes. He does cover thoroughly the Holy Spirit and how it changes your life. Recommend this teaching book.
This book was instrumental in helping me to understand the awesome, vital role that the Holy Spirit plays in our lives. Having been brought up in varied denominations which ran gamut from esteeming the position of the Holy Spirit as something reserved for the especially 'holy' to pretty much ignoring the Holy Spirit all together - I was amazed to discover how intimate a relationship He craves with me.

This is by far the best book I've ever read on explaining the three baptisms that are presented in scripture—baptism into the Body of Christ (salvation), water baptism, and the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Pastor Robert Morris is one of the most balanced teachers there is, and this is maybe his best book. Ever Christian should read this book!

Much better than I expected and also not quite what I expected. Really challenged me in my intentionality with my relationship with God and definitely given me a clearer picture of who God is and desires to be in my life and the lives of those around me. I would highly recommend this book for any believer or anyone questioning whether or not they want to pursue a relationship with God.

This book was a tremendous insight into the person of the Holy Spirit. I do still have a couple of questions, but none detrimental to my faith. I think if your church doesn't talk about the Holy Spirit for whatever reason this book is great exploration into relationship of knowing the Holy Spirit without making you weird.

A wonderful book that inspired me to really get to know and communicate with the 'person' of the Holy Spirit. Morris allows himself to be vulnerable in order to unravel how the Holy Spirit work and move in our lives.

I have to admit, I don't really like non-fiction books and have a really hard time finishing them. This was one of the best non fiction books I have read and I could not put it down. It has really helped me develop my relationship with the Holy Spirit. I highly recommend it!

Very well written. Many times throughout the book I have been extremely blessed.
I've been a Christian for 52 years and Baptised in The Spirit but still learning about the love of God.
Buy this book and be blessed.
