This is a monograph, but I think it is one of the best examples of good scholarly work. It is a biography of Muhammad Husayn Haykal, an Egyptian intellectual and politician, but it focuses on how secular Egyptian intellectuals in the 1930's switched to Islamic themes in order to appeal to a mass audience, and to win elections. Very great, Charles Smith is definately a hero.
