My son gave me this book they were giving them away on his university campus as a promo . I must say it was a fascinating read.On the outskirts of Fairbanks Robbie a six year old boy meet a mesmerizing girl his own age. Together they explore the the mysterious woodland surrending their homes. The world they discover is built from their own fantasies, and inhabited by creatures born from their dreams. But while Robbie and Fristeen grow inseparable, Robbies parents are drifting apart, and Fristeens

My boyfriend came home and then as an after thought (being that I am a reading junkie) remembered he received a book today. I was interested, "School book?" I asked, to which he replied "No some guy with a box full of them was just giving them away". With that he just laid it down and started talking about other things... but I immediately snatched it up for examination and off I went.
I just finished the book a few minutes ago and I'm I'mpressed. So impressed tha More...

This book is a long way from my usual fayre being more fairy-tale than a real story, the story line is a bit thin to put it mildly, but that said I found it rather pleasurable escapism just like that for the two children.
The story for what it is is about two 6 year-old children escaping the crumbling relationships of their parents into their imaginations and the wild Alaskan landscape around their homes. At times you can see the author's musical background in his descriptions which a More...

Like everyone else I got this book for free and saw nothing to loose from reading it. I'm not a huge fan of the style of writing, which demands real concentration from the reader from the very first page, but eventually looked past it.
I can identify with the imaginative nature of the book and found following the journey of the children as they discovered the deeper aspects of the forest quite thrilling.
I also, like the 'realness' of their parents, however, I felt the childrens More...

Why only 2 stars?
1. I didn't like the abrupt and unfitting ending. It seemed like Shapero didn't know how to end it but had a deadline to meet so he quickly typed a couple pages and stuck them on the end of his manuscript.
2. The two main characters are six years old. The way they think and speak are unrealistic.
3. The writing is sometimes too long and descriptive while at other times it feels abrupt and forced.

Like many other reviewers I was handed this book for free during the Edinburgh Book Festival last week.
I had a vague recollection of seeing a précis of the book some-place so I was eager to read it.
It is a slightly whimsical book. The descriptions of the countryside through which the children wander are vivid; although the language employed doesn't really resonate as being that of six year olds.

My manager was given this book for free on the street one day, so she passed it along to me. Hesitantly, I began reading this book with the colorful cover. I was pleasantly surprised! There is definitely some strangeness to it, but it also has heart and fantasy, as two 6-year olds escape difficult family situations via the Alaskan wilderness and imagination. The style is a little overdone, a little flowery at times, but at others it's just right. The author uses specific color descriptions

Like other reviewers, a college-aged guy and girl with a bunch of boxes of copies of this book handed it to me on my college campus last spring. At first I wasn't interested, but the cover intrigued me, so I picked it up. The imagery in the book was rich, luscious, and sensual, enhancing the magical theme, and the development of imaginary yet understandable characters in the children's world was interesting. I could see how Shapero could be using their world as a symbol of Robbie and Fristeen'

When I received this book for free on Rue University in downtown Montréal, all I could think was "What's the message in this and why am I being given it for free?". Ordinarily the sort of free things you receive in a big city are food samples or religious propaganda, and the idea that I was getting a free book seemed too good to be true. The entire time I was reading it I was trying to figure out what the message was, and upon finishing it I still have no clue what the author intended.

The author does a good job of creating the vivid world of six year olds, yet he delves into topics that do not seem age appropriate. Children at the age of six do not normally deal with the topics of sex, drugs, and how the brain operates. During the majority of the book I felt as if I were slogging through waist deep molases to advance a page. Getting to the conclusion of the book was unrewarding for the time and effort spent reading.

A tale of lost innocence, written much how you would a film.
I found it difficult at first to get into the book, as the writing style doesn't follow what I would call "traditional" verse.
Still, I could put the book down after the first chapter or so, and it was an interesting perspective on the ways that young people understand and react to tragedy in their lives.
I enjoyed the book, and would read it again. It gave me something to think about.

This book really gets 3.5 stars from me. It's a really well-written and fantastical story, but I wish the protagonists had been a little older. I was uncomfortable at times with 6 year-olds going through these things, but the idea of real-life stress leading to the creation of a new world in the woods is very appealing. I would read more by Shapero.

Explores the beauty of a child's imagination. Two kids play together, roaming free in the forest, to get away from very odd parents! Beautiful descriptions of the forest trees and nature. Melodic prose that often rhymes and guides you merrily through the chapters.

I didn't quite know what to think of this book. Very interesting imagery and fantasy, but I had trouble being interested in the children characters. Seems like kids might like the imaginary aspects, but don't think it's really a kids book...

I got this book because it was being given away by the publisher on campus. Two kids with many boxes of these books were trying to give them to passers-by, most of whom ignored them.
SPOILER ALERT:
The book is weird. I understand the author's goal of showing the imagined worlds of two 6-year-olds and how they escape their realities by using their imaginations, but I want to learn more about the realities. I don't understand the end: did the cabin actually burn down? Has More...

Good imaginative stuff, but naked six-year-olds running around in the Alaskan forest, kissing, "getting married", and a singular obscenity mouthed to a parent, were a bit much.

Given away for free on campus. Came with a CD and the jacket is pretty. We'll see how this goes.

This was a little different to my normal read. It was weird but good. The two main characters was amazing.

A quick, easy read that I got handed for free on my college campus. Unfortunately, it's pretty poor writing. It's quite childish in tone, yet has sex and drug references all over the place, making it ill-suited for both children and adults. It was barely entertaining enough that I wanted to finish it, but I was horribly disappointed with the last few pages. I honestly can't say it was worth reading.

This book was really good. It was very odd, but it had a very interesting play on imagination.
